Materials: Empty tilet paper rll Waxed paper Rubber band I Wish that I Had Duck Feet, by Dr. Seuss Wrksheet 111 Calendar: Cntinue rutine activities. Math: Read I Wish that I Had Duck Feet. Have the child cmpare feet sizes. On paper, have the child trace arund the feet f each family member. Cut ut each set f feet, and write the name f the family member n the paper ft. Have the child place them in rder frm smallest t largest. Use a ruler and measure hw many inches each ft is. Write the measurement n the paper ft. Have the child cmpare the feet sizes by asking questins: Wh has the largest feet? Wh has the smallest feet? Hw many inches lnger is the lngest ft than the shrtest ft? Cntinue asking ther questins. Language Arts: Have the child recall details f the experience at the park. Start him ut by asking him t tell yu what he remembers abut his trip t see the ducks. Math: Intrduce the unit n plants by having the child make a diagram f the parts and the needs f a plant. Use the patterns and labels n wrksheet 113. Cut six circles. These are the flwer petals. Cut ne hexagn. This is the flwer center. Cut ne large green rectangle. This is the stem. Cut tw green triangles. These are the leaves. Cut ne white r gray clud. Cut ne yellw circle. This is the sun. Cut ten small yellw rectangles. These are the sun rays. Glue the hexagn n a large piece f blue paper. Lessn 113-Page 1

4 Glue the six circles arund the hexagn. This makes the flwer. Glue the green stem belw the flwer. Glue the tw triangle leaves n the stem. Tape r glue brwn paper belw the base f the stem. This is the sil. Glue tan strips f yarn frm the bttm f the stem. These are the rts. Glue the sun and sunrays n the blue paper. Glue the clud n the blue paper, and draw raindrps falling frm the clud. Cut ut the labels and glue them n the crrect parts f the plant. Language Arts: Read the fllwing t yur child: The fur basic parts f mst plants are rts, stems, leaves, and flwers. The rts help supprt the plant by hlding the plant in the grund. The rts als absrb water and nutrients frm the sil s that the plant can grw. The stem carries the water and nutrients frm the rts t the leaves f the plant. Stems als prvide supprt fr the plant and direct the leaves twards the sunlight. Leaves are made t catch light, and the uter surface f the leaf has a waxy cating which prtects the leaf. Veins carry water and nutrients within the leaf. The leaves use the sunlight, air, water, and nutrients t prduce fd fr the plant. Then the fd prduced by the leaves mves t ther parts f the plant. Flwers lk pretty, and they can turn int fruit. They als make the seeds t grw new plants. Discuss the infrmatin with yur child using the diagram frm math. Sing The Parts f a Plant t the tune f The Wheels n the Bus. Art: The parts f a plant are flwer and stem, flwer and stem, flwer and stem; The parts f a plant are flwer and stem, leaves, and the rts. Have the child make a sunflwer. Help the child trace his hand t create a pattern fr the flwer petals. Place ne hand n a piece f yellw paper, with fingers slightly spread apart, and trace arund the utside f his hand. 5 Lay the petals in a circle. Overlap the thumbs n the first tw handprints. Then place the pinkie fingers f the secnd and third handprints clse tgether, and verlap the thumbs n the third and furth handprints. Cntinue this pattern fr the ther three sets f handprints. This will make the flwer petals lk mre evenly spaced. Glue the flwer petals t a large piece f blue paper. Cut ne brwn circle fr the center f the flwer. Glue this n the sunflwer. Rll a lng strip f green tissue paper t create a stem. Glue this n the paper. Cut ut tw leaves and glue them t the stem. Make additinal sunflwers t create a sunflwer garden. Enrichment: Grw bean seeds in a re-sealable baggie. Have the child spray a paper twel with water. Fld the paper twel int a small rectangle the width f the baggie. Lay the paper twel flat in the baggie. Place three lima beans n the paper twel. Zip the baggie shut. Tape the baggie t a sunny windw and watch the seeds sprut. Spray the paper twel with water as needed. NOTE: When the baggie is pened it may smell. Repeat this prcedure with carrt seeds. Grw a ptat plant in a jar. Insert fur tthpicks int the middle f the ptat. Space the tthpicks evenly s they will supprt the ptat n the rim f the jar. Fill tw-thirds f the jar with water. Suspend the ptat, pinted side dwn, with the bttm half f the ptat in the water. Place the jar with ptat in a sunny place. Change r add water as needed. The water shuld be clear. After a few days, rts shuld frm belw the waterline. In tw r three weeks, stems and leaves will sprut frm the tp. After abut a mnth, the ptat can be planted in a small pt filled with ptting sil.
