Bandwidth intensive applications are driving the growth of today s network. Deploying a scalable, reliable and operationally simplistic network is the only way to guarantee that a network will be as flexible as the applications that run on it. Instantaneous network response times and resilient server connections are top-of-list requirements for creating an ebusiness infrastructure. Traditional 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps Ethernet connections to the backbone and server farms may not meet these demands. Nortel Networks* Passport* 8600 Routing Switch provides a complete solution for Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over fiber and copper media. It is a key component of the Nortel Networks Optical Ethernet solution delivering Gigabit Ethernet performance and Quality of Service (QoS) for businesscritical applications and services such as Internet Telephony. The Passport 8600 provides ease-of-use, high-performance, reliability and scalability within a single platform to support converged voice, video and data. The Passport 8608SX Routing Switch module provides eight Gigabit Ethernet ports with SC connectors. It is optimized for switch inter-connections and building risers, delivering cost-effective Gigabit switching and routing using MultiMode fiber.

2 The 8-port Passport 8608GBIC Routing Switch module uses plug-in Gigabit Interface Converters (GBICs) with SC connectors for customers wishing to mix and match interface types on a single module. It is optimized for LAN backbones and enables long-distance switch inter-connection over MultiMode or SingleMode fiber. The GBICs are available in shortwave (SX), longwave (LX) and extended distance (XD and ZX). Figure 2: Passport 8608GT Gigabit Ethernet Routing Switch Module. The Passport 8608SX and the Passport 8608GBIC modules deliver up to 16 Gbps of bandwidth in a single trunk using distributed Multi-Link Trunking and support Express Classification (XC) for wire-speed Layer 2, Layer 3 and Layer 4 policy services. The 8-port Passport 8608GT Routing Switch module with RJ-45 connectors provides Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over Category 5 copper cabling. The Passport 8608GT is a low-cost solution that is ideal for servers or power users supporting distances of up to 100 meters. The 16-port Passport 8616SXE Routing Switch module with MT-RJ connectors provides Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over fiber media. The Passport 8616SXE is optimized for server farms and power workstations that require increased bandwidth per port. With a maximum of 128 Gigabit Ethernet ports, the Passport 8616SXE provides the density necessary for implementing today s applicationdriven networks. Each Passport 8600 Gigabit Ethernet module has LEDs to indicate port status and activity, and additional LEDs to indicate power and diagnostic status. Table 1 shows the connectivity types and maximum port density that can be supported in the 6-slot and 10-slot chassis.
