3 3 P a g e The Certificate is based on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) as developed by Dr Marsha Linehan. The course is designed to provide a detailed training in the taught elements of DBT as well as guidance support in their practical application and maintenance through the establishment of Consult Groups. For obtaining the BPS Approved Certificate each delegate will need to attend the modules of the Certificate plus pass the online test with min 80% result. Learning outcomes and objectives: Delegates will have an overview of understanding of DBT including its applicability historical development and theoretical underpinnings; Delegates will learn how to recognise Borderline Personality Disorder and symptoms and behaviours associated with it; Delegates will understand the nature and importance of the Commitment stage of DBT and practice the use of techniques and strategies to facilitate it; Delegates will understand the nature and importance of Validation within DBT and practice the use of techniques and strategies associated with it; Delegates will understand the nature and importance of Mindfulness in DBT and practice the use of Mindfulness and its appropriate application; Delegates will understand the nature and importance of behaviour therapy within DBT and practice the use of techniques and strategies associated with it; Delegates will understand the nature and importance of Contingency Management within DBT and practice the use of skills associated with it;

4 4 P a g e Delegates will understand the nature and Problem Solving Skills within DBT and practice the use of techniques and strategies associated with it; Delegates will understand the nature and importance of Exposure techniques within DBT and practice the use of such techniques; Delegates will learn the Dialectical and Stylistic strategies and skills associated with DBT and practice their use; Delegates will understand the nature and importance of Consult Groups within DBT and how they should be used to address the challenges of working with BPD clients; Delegates will learn how to assess and appropriately manage suicidal and self harming behaviour within a DBT approach; Delegates will learn how to assess and appropriate manage the termination of therapy within DBT. What is the target audience? Psychologists, Therapists, Counsellors, OTs, Nurses, Doctors, Arts Therapist, Social Workers, Addiction Workers, Youth Offending Teams Workers, Probation Officers and others working with complex cases. The course is set within delegates organisational context in order to maximise the practical applicability of the training to their work context. Employer s perspective and particular requests are taken into account.

5 5 P a g e This course consists of 3 modules*: Introduction to DBT Course Length & Content ONE DAY ( ) A broad overview of DBT covering its basic background and key concepts and strategies contained within it Training Group Size Up to 50 delegates Notes This one day course is an open access course designed for those who want a broad introduction to DBT. It is known that the effectiveness of DBT delivery is enhanced if nonspecialist stakeholders in the service (e.g. managers and referral agents) have some understanding of how DBT works. For this reason this ONE DAY course is also of value to those who do not go onto complete the rest of the Certificate

6 6 P a g e Course Length & Content DBT Module 1 THREE DAYS ( ) This covers Commitment Structuring the therapy Validation Skills Training Group Behaviour analysis Dialectical strategies Mindfulness Establishing and delivering a DBT service Training structure of Module 1 consists of: Teaching sessions covering the major DBT strategies and techniques Modelling of skills Role plays to develop participants own skills Reflection and discussion sessions Use of example cases and scenarios Working in consult groups to practice DBT adherent interaction Training Group Size Up to 18 delegates Notes

7 7 P a g e DBT Module 2 Course Length & Content Participants will be asked over the subsequent 6 months following Module 1 to: take on at least one individual DBT client deliver at least one complete cycle of a DBT skills training group attend consult group regularly complete assigned reading complete a DBT casebook* prepare a presentation of the casebook* Training Group Size Up to 18 delegates Notes For pricing purposes Module 2 is costed at 4 one hour meetings Skype meetings per consult group plus 7.2 hours for support *casebooks may be completed and presented in groups of one to four according to logistics The course tutor will provide up to 12 hrs Skype meetings for up to two consult group, plus UNLIMITED support during the 6 month period. Skype meetings would be scheduled by pre-agreed mutual arrangement

8 8 P a g e DBT Module 3 Course Length & Content Casebooks forwarded to SDS no later than 14 days before meeting the training group again, for marking Training Group Size Up to 18 delegates Notes 1 day is allocated for casebook marking ONE DAY ( ) Presentation of case books and assessed role play. One hour examination and marking (multiple choice questions and sentence completion questions.) 80% pass required. Skills training refresher

9 9 P a g e FAQs about the Course Do I have to complete the Introductory Course if I already have some basic knowledge of DBT? Yes. There are certain aspects of the training such as modelling skills groups and the overall gestalt of DBT which are contained in the Introduction but not covered elsewhere in the programme. We have found that fail to attend the Introduction slows learning in Module 1. Can I call myself an Accredited DBT Practitioner after completing this course? There is currently no universally Accreditation scheme for DBT training. This course however is the ONLY one currently run in the UK which has been Approved by a nationally recognised independent professional body (with no ties to the training provider) The British Psychological Society. It is designed as a post-qualification training course? We currently take the position that all delegates who successfully complete the Introduction and Modules 1-3 are in a position to describe themselves as DBT Practitioners IF they already possess a recognised professional qualification at undergraduate level or above within the health, social care or counselling fields. For those delegates who complete the course (including the online assessment in Module 3) but who do not have such a qualification, they will receive the BPS Approved Certificate in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy but should not describe themselves as DBT Practitioners. For those delegates who successfully complete the course (all 3 Modules including the online assessment and casebook marking) and possess the aforementioned professional qualification they will receive the BPS Approved Certificate in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and can describe themselves as DBT Practitioners. Does this Certificate train delegates to be DBT Supervisors or Trainers? No.

Kennedy, Consultant Clinical Psychologist Fiona has a vast clinical experience in mental health (from anxiety through eating disorders and PTSD, to psychosis and personality disorders) and learning disability fields. Fiona s main orientation for many years has been Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). She was a Board Member/Trustee for the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP). Fiona is BITT trained in DBT and has extensive experience of training staff in DBT skills in a range of organisational contexts. She has extensive experience of teaching and presenting, giving regular input to doctoral training programmes and teaching other professionals. Amongst many other research projects she has studied dissociation after trauma that led to a new theoretical model and scale, as well as innovative new treatments. The creation of an effective treatment service for selfharming, suicidal, revolving door inpatients was quoted as an example of national excellence by the governments National Audit Office in its House of Commons report Safer Patient Services 2005 and received an award for clinical excellence from BUPA.. She has presented her research at many national and international conferences. With her deep knowledge of the subject and outstanding leadership qualities Dr Fiona Kennedy is a truly inspirational tutor.
