1 2015 LSAMP-IINSPIRE Summer Bridge Program Kirkwood Community College The Iowa Illinois Nebraska STEM Partnership for Innovation in Research and Education (IINSPIRE) is an NSF LSAMP alliance among sixteen two-year and four-year colleges and universities working together to broaden the participation of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in the Midwest. Kirkwood Community College is a member of the IINSPIRE Alliance. The IINSPIRE Alliance goal is to double the number of underrepresented minority STEM graduates in the alliancewithin five years to 350 graduates and to build a foundation for greater increases in future years. Because students from populations historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines are a growing segment of the region s population, there is statewide urgency to remove the barriers to progress in developing a diverse STEM workforce. The IINSPIRE Alliance has set forth the following objectives to guide alliance-wide activities in pursuit of the goal: Community-based and student recruiting: Inform teachers, counselors, parents and students in Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska about IINSPIRE-LSAMP and increase their awareness about STEM careers. Engage current alliance students having interest and potential in STEM and increase their awareness about STEM majors and careers. Collaborate with community-based recruiting models within the alliance. Bridge programs and transitions: Leverage and create initiatives that assist students in their transitions from high school to college and from community colleges to bachelorgranting institutions. Connect students with peer mentors. Faculty engagement and inclusive pedagogy: Facilitate faculty collaboration and peer groups across the alliance to share inclusive pedagogy and mentoring practices that lead to greater student success. Student research opportunities, mentoring, and training: Connect and support students with mentored research opportunities. Organize research training experiences for alliance students to earn a research certificate. Mentor training: Provide training and resources for mentors who supervise undergraduate research projects. Project management, communication, and institutional integration: Organize and manage IINSPIRE-LSAMP team members and activities to achieve project goals. Leverage institutional resources and partnerships, and use alliance and institutional data to implement effective programs based on institution-specific needs. Assessment and evaluation: Track student participation and enrollment statistics. Assess alliance-wide and institutional outcomes and use evaluation results to inform and improve practices.

2 Bridge Program Overview The four day summer program will begin on Sunday, August 16, 2015 and run through Thursday, August 20, 2015 on Kirkwood Community College s Cedar Rapids Campus. Up to sixteen (16) qualified students will be selected to participate in the program, which is cost-free to participants. These students will have an opportunity to experience university life while living at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center. The intense program of study will focus primarily on student empowerment and strategies that promote academic success. Collaborative learning is strongly encouraged in the LSAMP-IINSPIRE Summer Bridge Program. Participants will make new friends and have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with Kirkwood s campus and its extensive services. Participants will be prepared to be successful in all aspects of their college life. Most importantly, however, this program provides an excellent opportunity for students to prepare for exceptional performance in technical courses such as pre-calculus, calculus, and physics. Students will receive 1-hour credit class grade upon successful completion of the class. All homework assignments will be graded and all bridge program participants will receive a grade for the class. Curriculum The Summer Bridge Program is a residential program for selected under-represented minority students who have been admitted to Kirkwood Community College in a STEM major for the upcoming fall semester. The Kirkwood Community College residential Summer Bridge Program will focus on enabling participating minority high school graduates to achieve a smooth transition to college life. The Summer Bridge program emphasizes three areas: academic instruction, academic skills and life skills. The curriculum will consist of an introduction to college life and preparation for math, science, and engineering fundamentals. The program will also feature hands-on learning opportunities, tours, social, and recreational activities. Criteria for Participating In addition to being an under-represented minority student (African-American, Latino/Hispanic, Pacific Islander, or Native American) students participating in the Summer Bridge Program must meet the following criteria: Be accepted to Kirkwood Community College for the upcoming academic year. Be a United States Citizen or Permanent Resident. Have a 2.7 GPA if you are a high school student, or 2.5 GPA if you are a college student Provide a copy of your high school transcript Have declared a major in one of the targeted STEM fields. Be available and committed to participate fully for the entire four day time frame, beginning Sunday, August 16 through Thursday, August 20,

3 Attend an early orientation session (i.e., before the start of the Bridge Program) and take the math COMPASS placement test prior to attending the program. o Try to block Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:20 2:20 pm in your fall schedule for College 101 class. Complete and return all forms as listed in the application procedure. Students graduating from high school in 2015 must submit Parental Consent Form as part of their application. Each student is required to provide a deposit of $20 which will be refunded upon successful completion of the four-day program. In addition, the hotel will require a $50 refundable deposit for incidentals during your stay. Questions any regarding any of these requirements can be addressed to juanita.limas@kirkwood.edu. Room and Board Room and board is provided to all participants. All students participating in the Summer Bridge Program are required to stay at the hotel for the duration of the programdates. Students are housed in hotel rooms and must follow the rules and regulations prescribed by Kirkwood Community College and IINSPIRE Alliance staff. Meals are provided daily through on-campus dining. A variety of social and recreational opportunities (e.g., swimming, billiards, volleyball, table tennis, and basketball) are available on campus to students enrolled in the Bridge Program. Living in a hotel is an exciting opportunity that requires self-discipline, compatibility with other students from different backgrounds, and a high degree of responsibility. Counselors are available to assist students during this period of group living. They will offer support as needed so that each student will have a successful experience. An important part of this adjustment is an understanding by participants of the hall rules and standards of conduct that are designed to provide a high degree of civility, stability and security. An orderly, clean and comfortable living area supports and enhances the learning atmosphere and benefits everyone. Summer Bridge Program Rules and Regulations The following guidelines apply to participants in the Summer Bridge Program: At all times be respectful of yourself, others and the environment. All spaces will be left better than they were found. All students must turn-in a release form and a copy of your medical insurance card (front and back) or contact our office right away if you don t have coverage.
