6 Course Which? I didn t really know what I wanted to study, so the Bachelor of Arts was perfect because it gave me the flexibility to try out different things. I started with areas of study that I found interesting and have ended up with a real passion for politics. Tim Your Arts degree structure The Bachelor of Arts degree is structured in a way that allows you to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the area you are specialising in, your major. Emphasis is placed on how to apply your knowledge to real life situations and how to develop valuable skills in research.whilst remaining flexible, the Arts degree provides direction through structured progression with core units in each year: Gateway, Cornerstone and Capstone units. These units are about consolidating and extending your learning so that you can get the most out of your major. About the units: 1. Gateway unit: a 1st year foundation unit introducing you to the major. Most areas of study require you to take two gateway units. 2. Cornerstone unit: a 2nd year unit that focuses on making sure you have a solid grasp of your major 3. Capstone unit: a 3rd year unit allowing you to demonstrate advanced knowledge of your major. This could be in the form of a research project or internship with an industry partner. For detailed information about courses and content go to: monash.edu/study/ coursefinder I ve always enjoyed international studies, so the Bachelor of Arts (Global) was an easy choice for me. Dave Bachelor of Arts Degree This degree gives you maximum flexibility and choice. You would choose this course if you wanted time to decide what you want to specialise in. The areas of study you can specialise in are listed on pages 20 and 21. Bachelor of Arts Specialist Degree In a specialist degree, your main area of study is chosen for you. You would choose a specialist degree if you knew upfront what area you wanted to specialise in, e.g. a Bachelor of Music or a Bachelor of Journalism. Bachelor of Arts Scholars Program This is a select entry program for students with an ATAR of 98 or higher. There are exclusive opportunities to attend seminars and guest lectures. You are also entitled to a personal academic mentor and an annual scholarship. Double Degree In a double degree, you study two degrees at the same time and specialise in 2 different areas, e.g. communications & commerce. Monash Arts offers double degrees with Law, Business, Engineering, Education, Social Work, Visual Arts and Science. You would choose a double degree to broaden your specialist knowledge and be more competitive in the job market. Diploma A one year diploma can be taken alongside your bachelor s degree allowing you to specialise in another Arts area of study. In fact, you can take an Arts diploma with any Monash degree. This type of diploma should not be confused with the pathway diploma listed on page 35. Internships Students enrolled in an Arts degree are able to gain academic credit and practical workplace experience through several work-integrated learning programs. Internships and Placements are an ideal way for the university to combine theoretical, classroom-based learning with experiential learning that prepares students for work in the real-world after the completion of their studies. New in 2014, the Faculty of Arts has introduced a suite of Elite Internship Units titled Arts Internship and Arts International Internship that will provide third year, high achieving students in the Faculty an opportunity to gain valuable work experience along with credits towards their degree. The internship can be taken anywhere in Australia or with an International organisation. Internship opportunities are also available in Prato. Read about our exciting programs at: artsonline.monash.edu/internships What your degree will look like The 24 units in your Arts degree are divided up as follows: The single degree is made up of 24 units. You choose your units from an area of study. Each area of study gives you a choice of several units. For example, History is an area of study which has more than 40 units on offer, including, Dantes Medieval World and Slavery and Freedom. You can see the areas of study on pages 20 and Semester 1 Gateway unit Gateway unit Gateway unit Gateway unit Gateway unit Gateway unit 2 Semester 1 3 Semester 1 Cornerstone unit Capstone unit The Major Eight units from the same area of study e.g. Politics. This is your specialisation. It includes gateway, cornerstone and capstone units. Some majors offer you the opportunity to do an extended major, adding 2 extra units to your requirement of 8. The Minor Four units from the same area of study (must be different to your major). Electives from Arts Four units from areas of study in Arts. (You can add these units to your major to make it an extended major made up of 10 units.) Open Electives Eight units from the same area of study or from different areas of study. You can structure this section however you like e.g. as another major or 2 minors, or a minor and electives. You can also take units from another faculty

7 Double Degrees A double degree involves studying 2 degrees at the same time. You graduate with 2 separate degrees but it takes less time than doing them individually as there are no Open Electives (see page 11 for a description of Open Electives). Benefits of studying a Double Degree By studying two degrees at the same time you can specialise in 2 or more distinct areas. Some of the benefits of taking a double degree are: You can broaden your career options and you ll be more competitive because you have two degrees With increased skills and knowledge you ll be more adaptable in different work contexts You can double your social circle and your future networking opportunities Arts graduate employability skills What? In a globalised economy the nature of work and the way work is managed is changing. Organisations now need people who can operate in multiple dimensions, who have the ability to analyse information, prioritise and communicate with stakeholders. These sophisticated soft skills are among the hardest to measure but ultimately can deliver the greatest value. * *Press Release Hudson Report AU October 2012 What your double degree will look like 1 Semester 1 Gateway unit Gateway unit Gateway unit 2 Semester 1 3 Semester 1 4 Semester 1 The typical 4 year double degree is made up of 32 units, 16 units for each degree. In a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Music double degree, you would complete 16 Arts units of your choice and 16 Music units. Some double degrees vary in length, for example, the Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Laws has 16 Arts units and 26 Law units and takes 5+ years to complete. Gateway, Cornerstone and Capstone units are unique to Arts degrees at Monash. Cornerstone unit Capstone unit The skills crafted in an Arts degree are becoming increasingly sought after by employers. I chose a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Business (Management) because I knew a double degree would give me a competitive edge in the job market. Stefani The Major Eight units from the same area of study e.g. (You can add these units to your major to make it an extended major made up of 10 units.) Second Degree Usually 16 units but can vary depending on the degree. Research skills Monash Arts students are self-reliant researchers, seeking out a variety of resources in order to answer complicated questions. 12 Areas of study Which? Behaviour, Welfare and the Human Condition Communications & Media Behavioural studies Psychology Sociology Art History and Theory Journalism Literary studies Behavioural studies explores the way in which humans act and interact with each other. At Monash, we focus on looking at human behaviour in the changing and challenging environment of the 21st century. Students analyse a range of historical and emerging insights about the way we behave from a variety of disciplines sociology, culture, philosophy, biology and psychology. Psychology draws on a range of phenomena including remembering and forgetting, thinking, learning, problem solving, how we communicate, our emotions, and our social interactions. It allows us to examine how we respond to the world around us, providing valuable insights into how we can interact with the world more effectively and safely. Sociology explores people and the relationships that they have in different group contexts such as families, schools and workplaces. Sociologists look to things like social class, gender, ethnicity, power and culture to understand and explain the differences in how people live, think and feel. Students can pursue the Gender studies stream within Sociology: Gender studies stream Not so long ago, issues such as gender, sexuality and the relationship between the sexes were not theorised, researched or even taught. Today, however, there is such a large body of knowledge and theory on these topics that a new branch of academic study has been formed women s studies and/or gender studies. Gender studies frequently challenges students existing understandings and extends their horizons. Students engage with topics including gender and the body, media representations, new reproductive technologies, employment and education, and ethnicity and racism. Art history and theory involves a critical engagement with all types of visual expression and communication in society, ranging from the traditional fine arts such as painting and sculpture to recent visual media such as photography, installation art, advertising, fashion, film, and digital-culture. Communications Communications focuses on the role of media in society and how this influences our communications. Today, we get most of our news and knowledge from mass media and social media, so it is vital that students learn about the structures of communications industries and how to critically analyse the media. Students also explore the relationships between media, culture and power. Film and screen studies In this digital age, almost everybody knows something about movies and television programs. We re all amateur critics, but this teaching program extends and enhances everyday ways of thinking about film and screen into more sophisticated and specialised methods and approaches. Students explore the film and screen cultures of Asia, the United States and Europe, looking at everything from contemporary popular Hollywood to documentary film. Our journalism program is the largest, most stimulating undergraduate journalism program in Australia. Our students are taught by real journalists who are at the top of their field. Through a combination of academic and practice-based work, students gain a solid foundation in all production technologies print, video, radio, and online in metropolitan, regional and international contexts. As their studies progress, students develop advanced research and communication skills to a professional standard. Journalism practice In journalism practice, students begin to produce real journalism from day one. The program covers the full range of production technologies print, video, radio and online and students are taught to reach high professional standards. As their studies progress, students build a production portfolio of published works that they can take with them to employers. Journalism studies Journalism studies complements a journalism major they are typically taken together but you can also take journalism studies as a stand-alone area of study. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on a range of areas including media studies, politics, economics, history and philosophy. Students learn about the context and practice of journalism in Australia and internationally, while developing skills in media research. Our literary studies program encompasses some of the most well-known, interesting and important poems, plays and novels of contemporary times and the past. Everything from the classic texts to contemporary works by Generation Y can be explored. Students learn to think about literature in relation to the ideas and concerns of the current time, as well as the time in which the literature was written. There are 3 different streams students can take within Literary Studies: Literatures in English stream introduces students to a variety of cultural and historical contexts and provides them with the tools to understand the relations between language, literature and culture. Creative writing stream students are encouraged to experiment with different styles and writing techniques and also develop skills in critiquing the creative process. Students study a number of key texts by major writers and have the opportunity to learn from the people who actually write the books our teaching staff are published authors with extensive professional experience. International literatures stream offers students the opportunity to read and study works of literature from European, Latin American and Asian countries. All works are studied in translation (English), but students with relevant language competency have the option to study works in their original form

13 Areas of study Which? Environment and Sustainability Global Studies (continued) Geography, climate and physical environments Geography, climate and physical environments integrates the study of environmental processes, landforms, soils and vegetation, climate and climate change, with human interactions and environmental management and policy. Students develop analytical skills in geography and environmental science through practical and field-based work and applied research projects. Students have the option to pursue one of the following streams: Climate, Land and Water stream provides a pathway to work in interdisciplinary policy areas, such as, climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity and cultural heritage conservation, environmental activism, sustainable consumption and green economies. Geographical studies stream provides an integrative approach for students interested in teaching geography at the secondary level or working in environmental education. Societies, cities and sustainability Society, cities and sustainability investigates the changing and complex relationship between people and their environments. Combining human geography, social science and sustainability science, this interdisciplinary area of study provides students with a unique blend of analytical skills and knowledge required to find sustainable solutions to the global challenges of rapid urbanisation, environmental degradation, climate change, deepening poverty, uneven global development, and rising socioeconomic inequality. Jewish Studies Jewish studies equips students with an understanding of Jewish civilisation in its many aspects language and literature, history, theology, philosophy, rabbinics, law, politics and sociology. Students may also take the following stream: Yiddish language stream The Yiddish language stream explores language, culture and literature over six units across three years. Politics Politics at university is more concerned with explaining how and why different political systems are constructed and how they work, than surface level politics such as current affairs. Students look at what happens, but also investigate why, such as the causes of political events and hidden meanings and motivations. Global Studies History, Archaeology and Anthropology Australia in the world Human rights International studies Ancient cultures Anthropology History Australia in the world looks at Australia s social, cultural and political landscape. At Monash, we are renowned for our field trips, our use of interactive media, and our willingness to look beyond the myths and stereotypes and interrogate Australia in new and different ways. In doing so, students engage with a number of different disciplines including history, politics, literature, geography, international and Indigenous studies. Criminology Crime is an issue that all citizens and governments confront on a daily basis. Criminology at Monash provides students with the skills to understand the complexities of crime, to learn about the various stages of the criminal justice system, to critically analyse its workings, and to explore alternative strategies for dealing with crime. Students analyse issues of crime at all levels local, state, national and global. Holocaust and genocide studies Holocaust and genocide studies asks students to reflect upon why genocides take place and how people come to participate in mass violence. Students study the Holocaust as well as histories of other genocide beyond the Holocaust, including such case studies as Armenia, Cambodia, the former Yoguslavia, Rwanda and Darfur. Themes studied across all genocides include: trauma and testimony; the limits of representation; the survivor experience across generations and cultures; the role of the law in adjudicating war crimes; media coverage; and the failure to prevent genocide. Torture, hunger, terrorism, military aggression, ethnic violence, political corruption, racial discrimination we all agree that these are some of the most serious contemporary human evils. The global effort to redress these evils has largely been organised around a framework of universal human rights. Students of human rights examine debates about the nature and legitimacy of human rights claims, and the role of human rights in the broader context of international affairs. They are given the opportunity to investigate human rights from a variety of disciplines, including history, philosophy, politics, criminology and the law. International relations International relations provides students with an understanding of the many aspects of contemporary global politics and economics, and a solid intellectual grounding in the key debates, historical events and political institutions that have shaped the international relations discipline. International relations at Monash specialises in four broad areas: international security studies; global and European Union regional governance; international political economy; and foreign policy. As the world globalises and nations and economies become more integrated, understanding our world and the ideas and beliefs of our neighbours is vital. International studies criss-crosses history, politics, international relations, sociology and economics. It starts by looking at the history of the 20th century and then moves on to the issues facing our world as we move into the 21st century. Students have the option to pursue Asian studies or European studies stream within International studies: Asian studies stream Asian studies enables students to study specific issues across a range of Asian countries, cultures and societies and provides a broad comparative perspective across these areas. European studies stream European studies focuses on the present, the past and the possible futures of Europe; its peoples and nations, individually and in relation to each other; its cultures, political and economic life; and the relationships that link Europe to the rest of the world. Monash integrates archaeology and ancient history to offer a comprehensive approach to understanding ancient cultures, focusing on the Mediterranean. Monash is also the only university in Victoria where you can study ancient Egypt in depth with staff who conduct archaeological fieldwork in Egypt. Students look at the reconstruction of past societies and their evolution based upon all surviving data art, architecture, religious beliefs, cultures and social structures. In its broadest sense, anthropology is the study of all things human. It explores all aspects of humanity everything from cultures, behaviours and communication to evolution, social structures and relationships. In recent years, there have been major social and political movements throughout the world in which people are stressing a sense of community, shared identity and assertions of difference. As a result, anthropologists are playing an increasingly important role where human diversity is an issue; anthropologists are called upon to provide their expertise. Indigenous cultures and histories Indigenous cultures and histories is taught by the Monash Indigenous Centre (MIC) at our Clayton campus, which is a nationally and internationally recognised academic centre. Students develop a good knowledge base about key issues in Indigenous societies, including the ongoing relationship between Indigenous and settler Australians, points of contestation and how this has shaped the position of Indigenous and non-indigenous Australians in contemporary society, and understanding Indigenous relationships to each other and to the land. History is not simply about dates and facts, but about new ways to interpret and understand the past, allowing us to make sense of the world today. History at Monash delves into different aspects of the human experience, and considers societies and civilisations across a range of periods and continents. Students can study everything from medieval and renaissance Europe to contemporary worlds, Asian civilisations and nations at war

Philosophy, Bioethics & Theology Bioethics The growth of scientific knowledge and technical ability in medicine, genetics and the biological sciences has led to a number of ethical problems which perplex us all, for example: is genetic enhancement of humans ethically justified? Does the fact that we can prolong someone s life in a permanent vegetative state mean that we should? The study of bioethics attempts to develop ethical thinking to keep up with advances in biomedical technology and anticipate further developments that are yet to come. Philosophy What sorts of things exist in the world and how are they related? How are the mind and matter related? Philosophy raises questions such as these about the basic assumptions of every form of human inquiry and attempts to find the answers. Students explore the notions of logic, critical reasoning, and personal and professional ethics. Religion and theology Is there more than what we see? It is important for all of us to acquire an appreciation of the various religions and spiritual traditions that shape our world. Only in doing so can we truly understand contemporary debates and the relationship of different religious and spiritual traditions with the modern world. Students have the opportunity to study a range of religious traditions, beliefs and theological systems within a variety of contexts

15 Stefani My BA Relocating to the city from a small town, starting uni solo with very little knowledge about the tertiary system was a big challenge when I first started my degree. But Monash has been fantastic when it comes to transition and finding your feet. I decided from day one that I d take every opportunity I could and it s certainly paying off. I m going overseas to study, I ve been involved in leadership programs and mentoring and I feel confident about the future. 16 Dave My BA Bachelor of Arts (Global) Arts Major International studies Arts Minor Communications Most memorable Monash experience so far The semester I spent on exchange at Sciences Po in Paris. Apart from learning so much about myself (like how to cook and do my own washing!) it was a great opportunity to learn about international studies in a much broader context. Most challenging experience What do you love about your degree? The flexibility! I ve taken a range of units from different areas of study, which has allowed me to work out what I like (and what I don t). It s also opened my eyes to career opportunities I hadn t considered before. What are you looking forward to this year? I ve learnt to think much more broadly about world issues, and have a real appreciation for how communication works and how it impacts the way we relate to each other. What I ve loved about my degree is the flexibility. I ve taken a range of units from different areas of study, I ve studied in Paris and I ve made a lot of new friends by getting involved in uni life. I feel confident that I m prepared for a wide variety of careers and am looking forward to applying what I ve learnt at uni in a real world context. Dave MY DEGREE STRUCTURE Semester 1 Semester 1 Semester 1 Prioritising time for study. 17 Tim My BA Being able to plan my degree to suit my needs and interests has given me a real sense of ownership. The best thing about having control over my learning is that I ve had the freedom to choose subjects I m passionate about and at the same time plan ahead for my future. Tim Bachelor of Arts Arts Major Politics Arts Minor History, Italian MY DEGREE STRUCTURE Semester 1 Semester 1 Semester 1 Most memorable Monash experience so far Studying Italian in Prato, staying at the historic Magnolfi Nuovo, drinking caffè at the local bars between classes, and aperitivo in the evening!
