1 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA
2 THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA IS READY TO PARTNER WITH THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE In just 60 years of existence, the University of South Florida has become one of the top public research universities in the world. From world-class academics, top 25-reasearch productivity, and athletic prowess in one of the nation s largest and most active media markets USF s accomplishments in its relatively young life have garnered national recognition. And this is only the beginning. In the coming years, our culture of focused leadership, high expectations and disciplined teamwork will raise USF to new heights. This trajectory, coupled with our compelling historic growth, makes the case clear: USF not only belongs with the Big 12 today, we will add significant value and enhance the conference for the future benefit of all its members. For the past 15 years, USF has focused on increasing its national prominence in every way. As an institution, we have set an ambitious goal of positioning ourselves for membership in the Association of American Universities through careful tracking of key AAU metrics which we upon improve each year. In research, we look to the National Science Foundation s rankings of research productivity, where we are now ranked among Top 25 national public universities for total research productivity. Within Florida, USF was recently designated as the state s first Emerging Preeminent State Research University by the government of the State of Florida (following only two other Preeminent institutions that have been in existence for more than 100 years.) The same focus exists in our 19-sport athletic program, which recently adopted a new five-year Strategic Plan in partnership with our athletics-minded USF leadership. As evidence of this commitment, in the past two decades, USF has increased its investment to USF Athletics by 50 percent. Guided by the legacy of former USF Athletics Director and NFL Hall of Fame inductee Lee Roy Selmon, called the father of USF football, the Bulls have risen to national excellence. In the span of just 20 years, USF became the fastest team in modern history to move from inception to being ranked in the AP Top 25 Poll, Top 10, and eventually the Top 5. USF Athletics scored a total of 350 points in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup Standings, finishing in 65th place nationally (2nd in the AAC) and ahead of teams from the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and Pac 12 conferences in the final national standings. USF s point total rose for the third straight year and has nearly tripled over the last 10 years. 3 We have realized these accomplishments while building an active and supportive campus environment, with a student enrollment of more than 48,000 across the three campuses of the USF System, a 2,000-faculty headcount, and an on-campus housing capacity of 6, AVERAGE USF STUDENT S HIGH SCHOOL GPA In the next year, USF will break ground on a $133 million new student village, including a Publix Supermarket, a unique on-campus branch of the Fortune 100 company headquartered in nearby Lakeland, FL. We will also soon expand our footprint in downtown Tampa with a new state-ofthe-art Heart Institute and the new Morsani College of Medicine near our main teaching hospital. This is part of a billion-dollar redevelopment project led by Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik, one of USF s strongest partners. Vital to our success is our culture of collaboration with our ever-expanding network of partners across the world. One key research partnership is the growing National Academy of Inventors. The NAI, founded in 2010 at USF and still headquartered on campus, boasts nearly 200 top research universities and institutes across the country as members, including every public university in the Big 12 Conference. Our partners also include major businesses that are housed in the vibrant Tampa Bay region of the nation s third-most populous state, anchoring the I-4 Corridor between Tampa and Orlando. Tampa Bay, named the Best City in the Southeast by Money Magazine in 2015, consistently ranks among the fastest growing in the country, with the Tampa Bay area adding thousands residents yearly to Florida s total population of more than 20 million. 4 Our region s population supports the nation s 11th largest media market, with six major television networks in the Tampa Bay area and the Southeast s largest newspaper, the award-winning Tampa Bay Times, with nearly 450,000 subscribers. With more than 300,000 USF alumni in more than 146 countries around the globe, including 160,000 alumni within the Tampa Bay region, we are also grateful to have an energetic fan base cheering on our student-athletes year after year. In football alone, home game attendance has averaged more than 40,000 since 2005 with many games drawing a crowd of more than 50,000. There are also large and active groups of alumni of existing Big 12 programs operating throughout Tampa Bay. It is an area full of tourism and entertainment, thriving businesses, innovative industries, intellectual capital and international military leadership. In addition to a major international port and cruise terminal, the Tampa Bay area is served by three international airports, including Tampa International Airport nationally rated highest in traveler satisfaction and named second-best airport in the country by Travel and Leisure and its combined 211 daily flights to 80 non-stop destinations. We are also served by a number of private executive airports. Florida s climate and culture make it easy to recruit top talent, attract competitors and draw spectators to athletic events year-round. The 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Game is just the latest competition to choose Tampa Bay for its marquee event. That list also includes the NCAA basketball tournament for men s and women s basketball (including the Women s Final Four), the NCAA Frozen Four in ice hockey, soccer exhibitions, two annual college bowl games and four NFL Super Bowls. Our sports teams include the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who play in Tampa s two-time Super Bowl host and newly renovated Raymond James Stadium (the home venue for the USF Bulls football program), the MLB Tampa Bay Rays at St. Petersburg s Tropicana Field, NHL Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena in downtown Tampa and NASL Tampa Bay Rowdies in Al Lang Stadium in downtown St. Petersburg. Tampa Bay is also an emerging amateur and youth sports hotbed, led by the world-renowned IMG Academy in Bradenton.
