USER S GUIDE
Roof Panel Application Guide RAYCORE roof panels are designed to meet the unique roof insulation needs of Log, Timberframe, Post & Beam, and Straw Bale Homes as well as other highly insulated and energy efficient green home construction. Lightweight and easy to handle, RAYCORE roof panels take on the challenge of adequately insulating these special environmentally friendly structures. RAY-CORE uses kilned dried Douglas Fir #2 or better in all panels. Below is a synopsis of typical roof application with RAY-CORE. Injected, Class 1 fire rated, closed cell polyurethane foam core with a 2.5 pound/sq ft density (12.21 kg/m 2. Rafters or trusses per structural requirements 4-12 self drilling SIP screws are screwed through wood members into decking or rafters. Integrated roof nail base 16 or 24 O.C. Roof sheathing can be nailed to the integrated wood in the factory, although it is recommended to be nailed on the jobsite. This allows for the OSB or plywood to overlap the panel joints ensuring a stronger airtight roof system 2
Step-by-Step Roof Panel Application Step 1: Prepare roof surface for panels to be installed. A tongue and groove finish could be applied or roof panels can be installed directly onto raters, decking, or trusses. Panels are typically applied perpendicular to the rafters or trusses, although they can be applied parallel with the rafters or trusses. Step 2: Place panels on top of tongue and groove, rafters, trusses, or decking; making sure they are tight (some choose to lay a vapor barrier on top of the T&G prior to applying the panel). Glue all edges with a construction adhesive to ensure a tight air seal. 3
Step-by-Step Roof Panel Application (continued) Step 3: Use 5-10 SIP screws to fasten panels to rafters, drilling through integrated studs 16 or 24 O.C. Torque drive screws are recommended. Use screw schedule per engineer requirements screws/panels is typical. Step 4: If using a cold roof application, place 2x4 sleepers laying flat on top of roof panels, screwing into 16 or 24 O.C integrated wood members. 4
Step-by-Step Roof Panel Application (continued) Step 5: If using a metal roof, place metal directly on top of roof panels screwing into the 16 or 24 O.C. structural members. If using asphalt shingles, place OSB directly on the roof panel, then apply tarpaper and shingles as code requires. *It is always good practice to check with local building codes on the use of different roof applications. 5
Wall Panel Application Guide When building with SIPs, RAY-CORE s insulated wall panels are far superior to conventional SIP panels. RAY-CORE wall panels integrate studs, insulation and wrapping to ensure structural integrity and best in class insulation r-values. RAY-CORE panels are easy to assemble, saving many hours of labor and cost during construction. Excellent insulation results in lifetime savings and energy efficiency. RAY-CORE sips are simply the best wall panels available. Insulation, studs and wrapping all completed at the factory. All you do is assembling. RAY-CORE s integrated studs are 16, 24, or staggered 12 O.C. ensuring our wall panels will be structurally sound for the lifetime of the structure. No dependency on adhesion of polystyrene to OSB for structural integrity. Moisture, mold and rotting do not compromise RAY-CORE wall panels. According to the US Department of Energy, 30% or more of a home s heating and cooling costs are attributed to air leakage. Polyurethane used as insulation is an effective air barrier and significantly reduces air loss. 6
Step-by-Step Wall Panel Application Step 1: Construct all window and door openings using RAY-CORE s insulated headers. Step 2: Lay out the panels and framed window/ door openings in preparation for the top and bottom plates. 7
Step-by-Step Wall Panel Application (continued) Step 3: When your wall meets a door or window simply cut the panel so it butts tight against the king stud on the window or door frame. Cut panels with a 10 ¼ or 16 circular saw depending on thickness of panel. 8
Step-by-Step Wall Panel Application (continued) Step 4: Apply standard construction adhesive on edges of panel. Push panels together so the foam side of panel touches the wood side of the adjoining panel. Make sure the panel joints are tight and square. Step 5: Nail bottom and top plate to each integrated stud 16 or 24 OC. *Make sure they are tight before you nail. The plates are keeping the panels tied together. 10
Step-by-Step Wall Panel Application (continued) Step 6: For corners, use RAY-CORE s prebuilt California corner panels. Step 7: Cut a piece of panel to fit on top and under openings. Nail into place. 9
Step-by-Step Wall Panel Application (continued) Step 8: Stand wall (*Sheathing can be placed either before or after wall has been stood.) Step 9: Nail bottom plate to subfloor on each side of the wall. 11
Step-by-Step Wall Panel Application (continued) Step 10: Tape all seams to seal all seams & exposed lumber with standard HVAC tape (air insulation sealant tape). With energy prices on the rise, the use of energy efficient products is a must. RAY-CORE's closed-cell polyurethane SIP wall panels yield an insulation R -value of 6.7/inch or higher. When combined with ease of construction, RAY-CORE s structural insulating panels reduce costs throughout the life of the home. 12
Wiring/Plumbing in RAY-CORE Panels can be routed out using a router, rotozip, or sawzall where channels are needed. Drill studs per code requirements where needed, place wire in chase. Backfill chase with any standard polyurethane canned foam (Great Stuff). Go to: raycoreinc for more detail & videos. 13
Wall Panel to Slab Application Guide Step 1: Line up treated lumber with J-bolts. Mark and drill holes through bottom plate. *Make sure mark is noticeable so you can find the drilled holes after the wall is stood. Step 2: Nail top and bottom plates into integrated studs 16 or 24 o.c. 14
Wall Panel to Slab Application (continued) Step 3: Make sure treated bottom plate is still lined up with J-bolts. Stand wall making sure the wall is supported by proper temporary supports. Step 4: Make OSB cut-out template (approx. 4 x6 ). Using a hand held drywall saw, cut out around template where J- bolts are located. 15
Wall Panel to Slab Application (continued) Step 5: Notch out foam cutout so J-bolt is exposed. Place proper washer /nut on J-bolt and tighten to specs. Step 6: Place 4 x6 foam block back in place after inspector has inspected the connection. Repeat steps 5-6 everywhere a J-bolt is located. 16
Hurricane Strapping Application Guide Cut the foam section out, then insert bracket. Use canned foam to fill in gap. This process is universal for all Simpson brackets that require embedment in wall or roof panel cavity. Hurricane Straps example (ie: Simpson STHD straps). Hurricane straps are nailed into the integrated studs that are imbedded into the panel 16 or 24 o.c (just as you do in conventional framing). If the integrated stud in the panel does not line up with the STHD strap then you will need to place a stud in proper location during the framing process. 17
