All you need to know about the control of bed bugs
What to do if evidence of bed bugs is found... For your business For your customer Prohibit access to the room and the adjacent rooms Do not remove anything from the room Record in detail the customer s complaint, this is important for the pest technician Call for a qualified pest technician on Identify previous activity in the room and any equipment such as a vacuum cleaner or dirty linens. Bed bugs are easily spread and the equipment and linens should be removed from the accommodation and housekeeping and storage areas. Any items connected to the room prior to complaint should be checked for bed bugs on a hard floor away from soft furnishings (carpet, linens etc) Empathise with the customer and offer another room if required well away from the affected room and area Arrange a doctor if required by the customer Advise that if bitten allergic reactions can occur for a number of reasons Offer to clean/wash the customers belongings and luggage to avoid the infestation spreading elsewhere Show the customer your bed bug strategy to show you are taking the threat seriously and have procedures in place
How to identify bed bugs It is important to identify bed bugs as quickly as possible, they spread quickly and easily and infestations are hard to treat. Early detection is critical to prevent an infestation taking hold. Your housekeeping staff and cleaners are important in early detection and should be trained to be bed bug aware as part of a bed bug management plan for your business. If you have seen any of the following signs you could have bed bugs in your business. Bed bug faeces Bed bug bites Bed bug nymphs and skins Bed bugs cause: Loss of customers and customers goodwill Loss of reputation Loss of revenue
Where do bed bugs hide? Bed bugs are small and will be most commonly found around the bed area. As well as being found in parts of the bed and bed linens they can be found: around and in the bed frame in any blankets or linen cupboards at the edges and under carpets and underlay under or behind skirting boards in and around light switches and sockets behind wallpaper or in wall cracks Bed bugs are nocturnal and don t just hide around beds. The potential threat affects anyone offering overnight accommodation. For more information visit nobedbugshere.co.uk
Why you need a bed bug management plan The number of bed bug infestations are on the rise globally as well as in the UK. The fast growing problem of bed bugs is due to increases in travel as they stow away in luggage and on clothes. Adopting a proactive plan for bed bug management could save your business customers, revenue and fines. A bed bug management plan will enable you to demonstrate you have taken all possible actions to prevent an infestation and will ensure: your business and customers are protected your staff are bed bug aware you can act quickly to limit and control the infestation quickly you act positively and responsibly showing customers you take the threat seriously you can include the bed bug management plan in your environmental policy Bed bugs can survive up to a year without a blood feed and lay eggs per week. There may be no problem today, but what about tomorrow?
