2 CLOSED LOOP SOLUTIONS In a closed loop setup the unit is integrated in the rack and the scope of the system is the rack. There are basically three types of closed loop installation. Because of the adjustable inlet valves and outlet direction of the EC fan the cooling module can be easily adjusted to the required setup. This results in flexible solutions for multiple scenarios. One cooling module can be installed on one cabinet and so deliver a cooling capacity of 24 kw per rack. This cooling capacity can be divided over two cabinets which results in a cooling capacity of 12 kw per rack. In case of installing two cooling modules on one rack you reach a cooling capacity of 48 kw or a redundant (1+1) solution for 24 kw. Functionality demands imposed on the IP network have continued to expand over recent years. This has increased processing power requirements and resulted in a higher potential impact (costs) of downtime. The IT industry responded to the increased processing requirements with high density computing, which has in turn placed higher demands on cooling. When it comes to cooling & energy efficiency, water cooling has proven to be one of the most (cost) effective methods. The Minkels OPEN LOOP SOLUTIONS In an open loop setup the unit is integrated in it s environment and the scope of the system is the room. The Minkels Watercooled module will be integrated in a traditional hot and cold aisle installation and draws the hot air from the back of the cabinets returning it as cold air to the front side of the cabinet. This hot and cold aisle setup is preferably optimised with a Minkels Cold Corridor. It can also fulfil your requirements in a redundant cooling scenario. Watercooled Cabinet (MWCC) combines the best technology and concepts, which are already accepted in the industry. This smart mix of proven technologies results in a unique and flexible solution. THE FLEXIBLE SOLUTION The cooling module can be installed in two ways: closed loop open loop The closed loop installation minimises the requirements from the room. All critical applications are isolated from the environment and stored in a single cabinet. The heat can be removed direct from the source and the room conditions can be secured less stringently. The cabinet conditions have to be controlled instead of the room conditions. A closed loop solution can be ideal for an SMB type company. All business applications can be centralised in a Minkels Watercooled Cabinet. Some low density applications, for example cabling and patching can be installed in a separated cabling rack. Minkels provides LANRack or Varicon M cabling solutions for this purpose. When you combine these units with today s virtualisation solutions the amount of business applications which can be located in one rack is impressive and will exceed the requirement of SMB type of companies. The Minkels Watercooled Cabinet enables you to standardise on cooling modules due to it s flexibility. The same module can be used in a datacentre and in MER or SER. The savings on maintenance and spare parts are significant especially when considered over time. It is hard to predict the future requirements of your IT environment, but with the Minkels Watercooled Cabinet one can adapt to every scenario. HYBRID LOOP SOLUTION This solution is a combination of a closed loop and an open loop solution. The hot air will be removed from the cabinet in the same way as a closed loop solution. This hot air will be cooled in the cooling module and presented to the Cold Corridor in the same way as an open loop solution. The total system is closed while the Cold Corridor prevents the cold air from mixing with the (warmer) ambient air. This solution doesn t require a raised floor.

The collector pipes divide the water among three individual heat exchangers, which are connected together. Each heat exchanger has 4 parallel channels among which the flow is divided. The construction is designed to provide a distributed temperature pattern along the heat exchanger. ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY The Minkels Watercooled Cabinet is designed with energy efficiency as the main criteria. The control unit of the Minkels Watercooled Cabinet is designed to optimise the system continuously. This delta T control results in a focus of cooling energy only where and when needed. The targeted area which requires cooling is especially minimised in a closed loop solution. Water is proven to be one of the most efficient media to transport heat (energy). The Air circulation within the cooling unit and the coil is optimised so minimal fan power is required to pump the air around. The combination of these elements results in an optimal cooling efficiency. The units flexibility can have an even bigger impact when taking the sustainability of your IT environment into consideration as it can follow the growth path of your IT environment. COST EFFICIENCY Standardising on the Minkels Watercooled Cabinet is easy considering it s flexibility and ease of integration with all cooling strategies. This results in significant savings on both OPEX and CAPEX. The savings on OPEX are basically on maintenance, spare parts and training of your operational staff. The operation of the equipment and fine tuning of the setting requires only a basic level of knowledge from your staff. Training and updating this knowledge is much easier for one standardised cooling unit than for a mixture of different sub optimised cooling units. Each fan unit can easily be swapped in case of failure. REGULATING MECHANISM The regulating mechanism is simple. The dt over the equipment is derived from the measured values of T in and T out. Based on this value the fan speed is regulated. In order to maintain a correct inlet temperature (T in ) the ON/OFF watervalve is used. With an extra correction factor one is able to choose the relation between the dt and T in regulating mechanism. Fan speed regulation on dt The dt determines the fan speed. POWER BOX AND CONTROL BOX The power and control of the Watercooled Cabinet is located on the top section of the cabinet. The control and power is separately housed and hot swappable. In case the control board fails, the complete box can easily be exchanged without downtime.
