1 Human Resources Department Job Description Post Title: Reference Number: Senior HR Adviser S754 Salary Grade: Grade 7 (29,704-33,432) Department: Base Location: Human Resources Pittville Campus Special Conditions: Some evening and weekend working may be required. The post is currently based at our Pittville Campus in Cheltenham but will be relocating to another Cheltenham campus in The post holder may be based at any premises the University occupies and may be required to work at any University site or any other reasonable location where the University is undertaking its business. The post holder may be required to attend conferences and seminars to inform decision making and future strategy. General 1. The Human Resources Department has University wide responsibility for all matters relating to staff employment, staff development and HR strategy. The Department leads on the development and implementation of human resource policies and practices intended to support the achievement of the University's strategic priorities. The responsibilities of the function include: remuneration and conditions of employment, employment law, policies and practice, employment relations and negotiations with recognised trades unions, grievance and disciplinary matters, recruitment and selection, management information, staff development and training, and occupational health. 2. Post holders will demonstrate a sound understanding of HR Strategy and aligning this to the business needs of the University. They will be expected to provide a proactive service to staff in the University in relation to the key functions of the department as outlined above. It is expected that role holders will have a degree or equivalent and be CIPD qualified. 3. Contacts - Internal University staff, external educational organisations at a local and national level.

2 Main Duties and Responsibilities Line Manager : Responsible for: Deputy Head of Human Resources Line management of one or more HR Advisers as part of effective team working 1 Primary Functions 1.1 Under the direction of the Deputy Head of Human Resources to work closely with defined Faculties/Departments/Schools in furthering the strategic objectives of the University in relation to HR 1.2 To provide professional advice, guidance and support on HR issues to managers as outlined in 1.1 above 1.3 To play a role in the development of polices and procedures in relation to HR and engage in specific projects as required 1.4 To manage the delivery of efficient HR processes across the range of the department s functions supporting other members of the department as required 1.5 To manage a range of case work including capability, disciplinary and grievance providing advice in line with policy and legislative requirements, seeking advice as required from the Head or Deputy Head of the department 1.6 To work closely with Schools/Departments in the implementation of recruitment, restructuring and forward staffing strategies and carry out role evaluations for new and existing posts 1.7 To maintain and review the job evaluation scheme and provide guidance on its fair implementation. 1.8 To liaise with employees, Trade Union Representatives and managers as appropriate 1.9 To participate in the staff development programme, developing and delivering sessions as required to other staff in the University 1.10 To be fully conversant with the integrated HR system producing and utilising reports as required to support managers 1.11 To take a major role in supporting one of the key areas of the Department s work which may include resourcing, effective use of systems and processes or staff development 1.12 To make a positive contribution in terms of the all University policies on Equalities issues 1.13 To undertake personal professional development related to the requirements of the role 1.14 To participate in meetings outside the University where appropriate, maintaining links with colleagues in the sector.

3 2 Secondary Functions 2.1 To represent the Department on internal and external Committees as directed by the line manager 2.2 To be responsible for ensuring compliance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998, principles of the Human Rights Act 1998 and all University policies and procedures in relation to the handling of personal data 2.3 To undertake any other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the grade of the post, properly directed by the line manager. These variations will not change the general character of the post or the level of responsibility entailed This job description is a guide to the work the post holder will initially be required to undertake. It may be amended from time to time to meet changing circumstances by mutual agreement. It is expected the job description will be regularly reviewed by the post holder and his/her manager. These discussions will normally take place during the Staff Development Review interview.
