Enduring Understandings and Essential Questions for your Theme Students will understand that 1) Students will understand that Chinese Zodiac signs are commonly believed and acted upon in Chinese society. Essential Questions 1) What are 12 Chinese Zodiac animals? 2) To what extent can the Chinese Zodiac tell me about myself? 1

Vocabulary: eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hair, head, shoulders, legs, feet, knees, tail.! Vocabulary: have, don t have, like, dislike, long, short, run, fast, slow, weird.! Sentences: One tiger has no ears, one has no tail. One tiger runs fast, one runs slow, it s very weird. F. Performance Tasks What culminating performance tasks will provide evidence that students have achieved the learning objectives? Indicate how students will be assessed for each mode of communication through interpretive, interpersonal and presentational performance tasks.! Interpretive tasks involve students in receptive communication of oral or written messages, in mediated communication via print and non-print material, or with listener, viewer, reader works with visual or recorded materials whose creator is absent. 4

5 ! Interpersonal tasks require direct oral communication between individuals who are in personal contact or direct written communication between individuals who come into personal contact.! Presentational tasks require students to engage in productive communication using oral or written language, produce spoken or written communication for people with whom there is no immediate personal contact or which takes place in a one-to-many mode, or author or create visual or recorded material for listeners or readers not personally known. Interpretive task:! Students will listen and circle the name of animals.! Students will look at the picture/drawing of the Chinese animals and say the names of the animals in order.! Students will write the names of the animals in pinyin by looking at the pictures of the animals.! Students will use resources from teacher and online to create their own zodiac art project.! Students will be able to sing one Chinese song about animals & body parts.! Students will watch a PowerPoint slide about the origin of Chinese Zodiac. Interpersonal task:! Students will pair up and do an information gap activity.! Students will complete one questionnaire by asking their partner questions about today s date, their birthday and what animals they like or dislike.! Students will be divided into small groups and discuss and share their opinion in whether or not if they agree with Chinese Zodiac s practice.! Students will conduct a survey by interview at least five people and find out what their Chinese zodiac signs in class. Presentational task:! Students will create their own Chinese song using animals and body parts in their lyrics and perform them with their groups.! Students will present their zodiac art project in the class. In their art project, they will be able to introduce their name, age, birthday, year born, Chinese zodiac sign and their three 5

Other Types of Assessment and Evidence of Learning Other types of assessment and evidence of learning may include a wide range of activities and products that provide meaningful evidence of learning, such as dialogue journals, reflective journals, posters, LinguaFolio self-assessment, role plays, presentations of visual or performance arts, portfolios, audio portfolios, e-portfolios, research projects, or videos. Include some assessment or reflection about students attitudes and perspectives toward the target language and culture.
