Course Description: In this arts workshop, the class will work collaboratively to conceive and execute a short film from start to finish. The class focuses on the language of film, storytelling and production as well as the needs for collaboration, multi-tasking and creative problem solving inherent in the filmmaking process. Each student will take on multiple roles in each phase of the production. The course will be broken up into three parts. The first section begins with a brainstorming session in which the themes and storylines of the movie are conceived. The script is then written, scenes workshopped and the group prepares to shoot. The second section is the shoot, with roles divided between camera, direction, acting, producing, art direction, and the rest. The final section is the edit and post-production. This will include score, sound design, titles and graphics. On the path to the final movie skills such as writing, acting, cinematography, producing, editing, title design, score, will all be utilized according the needs of the movie and the demands of the group. Course objectives/learning goals: The student will work to gain hands on experience in all phases of the production of a short film. This will include both the conceptual and practical aspects of telling stories through the medium of film. As a part of this process, the participants will work to understand and participate in a truly collaborative creative production in which all members of the group feel a clear sense of ownership and voice in regards to the final product. Since there are so many different aspects to the overall process, not all will learn every aspect, but instead will be encouraged to focus on those areas that most suit their interests, abilities and needs. Requirements Required text Please refer to the Blackboard site for other links and readings. TIME The main challenge of this class is the pressure to get a movie done, star t to finish, in the brief time allotted. As part of this challenge, it is expected that individually or as a group, the students will be able to work outside of class at least as many hours as in class. The may be working as a group developing the story or individually or in pairs working through the specifics of software or design. Response Writing: All responses are to be written in the FORUM for each topic via the New Classes site and should be received no later than the beginning of class on the due date. Your responses should be thoughtful, concise and something that demonstrates not only you have done the reading, watched the short, etc., but that you have also thought about how to use the information you gleaned from either. All students are expected to participate each day. The length or word count is less important than quality, but one quick sentence is frowned upon. You MAY respond to others in the forum. Late responses count but will be given less credit. Initiative and DIY ethos This class is based on the idea that YOU are taking charge of your learning through a collaborative and motivated methodology. To that end, you are expected to seek out help and information for your department on your own. So the producers will have to seek out ideas about what is expected of them and how best to achieve that, as will the 1

2 actors and the cinematographers. The hope is that through collaboration and collective learning, we will be able to overcome any challenges. Plagiarism will not be tolerated under any circumstance. Copying more than three words without making clear the source is plagiarism. Any papers found to contain unlisted sources from the Internet or extended quotes without footnotes will be immediately failed. As a Gallatin student you belong to an interdisciplinary community of artists and scholars who value honest and open intellectual inquiry. This relationship depends on mutual respect, responsibility, and integrity. Failure to uphold these values will be subject to severe sanction, which may include dismissal from the University. Examples of behaviors that compromise the academic integrity of the Gallatin School include plagiarism, illicit collaboration, doubling or recycling coursework, and cheating. Please consult the Gallatin Bulletin or Gallatin website [ for a full description of the academic integrity policy. Students are responsible for all missed assignments and in-class work. Grading Attendance and Participation (15%) Specific Roles: PROCESS (15%) Specific Roles: PRODUCT (15%) Response papers (15%) Final PRODUCT (40%) Attendance and Participation (15%) - this includes punctuality, in class discussion and contribution to the overall process, technically, creatively and in terms of energy. Specific Roles: PROCESS (15%) - this is working process; working with others, adding to the creative and productive conversation; punctuality and reliability. Specific Roles: PRODUCT (15%) this will be based upon what is on the screen in the final product. Response papers (15%) - students will be asked to write regular response and reflection papers based on specific parts of the process and readings to be assigned. These should be concise and to the extent possible, should indicate clearly the aesthetic, practical, and theoretical information taken from the work addressed. Final PRODUCT (40%) Since this is a group and collaborative product, this grade will be given to the whole group and will be a grade based on the quality of the final short film. Each department will be working on the elements of their department. 5 Roles to fill More than one or many people will fill many of these roles. Each student will fill at least three different roles, and probably more. Writer This will largely be collaborative. It includes story idea, dialogue and overall plot. Director Producer Cinematographer The director is largely responsible for the overall vision of the film. In our case, this may be a collaborative role. It includes directing performance, camera and look. The person/people who work to make the production happen. Includes releases, and logistics. The director(s) communicate the vision and the producers see what can and cannot be realized. Responsible for realizing the look, including framing, lighting, camera movement. Assistant Director Responsible for keeping the machine running and being the extra eyes and ears of the director. Line Producer/UPM Location Sound Cast (Actors, etc.) Wardrobe Production Design Location Scout Photographer DIT Storyboard artist Makes sure the production runs smoothly. When and how the logistics happen. Location sound will be in charge of the microphones and recording sound on location. Boom mic and wireless lavs. The cast will be in front of the camera. Also called The Talent. Coordinates the clothes of the cast and the overall look. The Production designer will be responsible for the look of the location and will work closely with the Cinematographer and wardrobe. Finds locations and document the details (size, etc.). Documents the shoot. Transfers the cards from location sound and the camera onto the computer. Creates sketches that tell the onset crew exactly what is meant to be in the final story. POST PRODUCTION Editor Composer Titles Designer Graphics Sound Designer (and mixer) Music Supervisor Colorist Post Production Supervisor Takes the footage shot and crafts it into a story. Creates a score that enhances the feel and emotional impact of the story. Chooses the font and look of the titles. If there are any graphics, this person will work to create them. This can also be in conjunction with titles design. Creates the overall soundscape of the film combing location sound, foley, effects, score and soundtrack. Works with the team to find music within the budget that enhances the story. Takes the final cut of the movie and give it the final look. Oversees the fluid interaction between all elements of the post process. 5
