1 COURSE: SOC 210- SOCIOLOGY OF THE FAMILY COURSE DURATION: TWO HOURS PER WEEK (30 HOURS) as taught in 2015/2016 Session LECTURER: Rasak Bamidele B.Sc (Ibadan), M.Sc (Ibadan) Department of Sociology College of Management and Social Sciences Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State Nigeria Location: Department of Sociology, College of Management and Social Sciences COURSE DETAILS: The family in society orientation and approaches in the study of the family in non-industrial and industrial societies with cross-cultural illustrations. The industrial and his or her changing position with the family. Possible alternative to the family. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The concept of Family will be examined. The course will also examine the general characteristics of family institution, cross cultural analysis the social functions of the family in both pre-industrial and contemporary, to examine trend in the changes within the family institution, to highlight factors responsible for these changes, to examine social problems emanating from the family transition and to explore possible ways of solving social problems arising from family disorganization. COURSE JUSTIFICATION: Family, basic social group united through bonds of kinship or marriage, present in all societies. Ideally, the family provides its members with protection, companionship, security, and socialization. The structure of the family, and the needs that the family fulfills vary from society to society. The nuclear family two adults and their children is the main unit in some societies. In others, it is a subordinate part of an extended family, which also consists of grandparents and other relatives. A third family unit is the single-parent family, in which children live with an unmarried, divorced, or widowed mother or father. 1

2 COURSE OBJECTIVES The main objectives of course are: i. To examine the general characteristics of family institution ii. To highlight the social functions of the family in both pre-industrial and contemporary. iii. To examine trend in the changes within the family institution. iv. To highlight factors responsible for these changes. v. To examine social problems emanating from the family transition. vi. To explore possible ways of solving social problems arising from family disorganization. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: This is a compulsory course that is mandatory for all students at the 200 level. Students must therefore attend normal classes and participate in robust debates during the course of the programme. Students will also be required to carry out assignments. They are expected to attend 75% of classes before meeting the requirement to be examined on the course. METHODS OF GRADING S/N TYPE OF GRADING SCORE 1 Participation in class 5 2 Assignments 10 3 Tests 15 4 Final Examination 70 5 Total 100 COURSE DELIVERY STRATEGIES Face to face lectures will be the major method of course delivery. In addition, there will be class discussion and seminars on topics to be allocated to the students. LECTURE CONTENT Week 1 and 2: Introduction on the Family in transition. Objective: At the end of the lectures, students will have an overview of the course; describe the various definitions, concepts and terminologies of Family. DESCIPTION: First Hour (week I) Overview of the course 2

3 Second Hour (week I) Definition of terminologies and concepts First Hour (week II) Structure of the traditional family. STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The Family is an important Social Institution with fundamental functions in the Society. Discuss 2. Trace the history of the Modern family. 3. Discuss what a theory represents in a family institution 3. What is the relationship of the various theory of the family? 4. How does bureaucracy relate with diverse interests of various organizational groups? 5. In what ways do evolutionary theory, better explain the family as a social institution? What factors responsible for the changes in family size? 2. Identify what are the most noticeable aspect of transition is in the structure of the family. 3. Indicates in clear terms, the specific changes that characterized the family as a social institution 4. What factors are responsible for the decline in the importance of the traditional family as it associate with the growth of industrialization? 4
