1 Level A1 + Aim To present information about / To focus on vocabulary connected to To practise reading for information/ To exchange information gathered from reading text Task To solve a quiz and crossword puzzle on the basis of both existing knowledge and information gathered from a reading text Preparation 1 Make one copy of Worksheet A (quiz and crossword puzzle) for each student. 2 Cut along the dotted line to separate Part 1 and Part 2 of Worksheet A. 3 Make one copy of Worksheet B (reading text) for every three students. 4 Cut Worksheet B along the dotted lines into three parts. Timing 30 minutes + Procedure 1. Introduce the topic by asking students if they know when is and whether they will be celebrating. (Don t get into too much detail about the celebration to avoid giving away some of the answers to the quiz and crossword.) 2. Give each student a copy of Worksheet A/Part 1. Ask them to read through the quiz questions and mark their answers on the sheet. Encourage them to compare their answers with their neighbours. The answers to these questions give students information on the background to. 3. Discuss the answers in open class. 4. Divide the class into three groups: A, B and C. 5. Now give each student the relevant section of Worksheet B. Everyone should read their text and be sure they understand and can pass on this information to others students. Note: Check that the students in group A are pronouncing Samhain correctly. It is pronounced Sow(like the female pig!) -in The reading texts focus on more specific information about. 6. Ask students to put their texts away and mingle with students from other groups to find out the information contained in the other three reading texts. They may make notes if they like. 7. When everyone has returned to their seats, give out a copy of Worksheet A/Part 2 to each student and ask them to complete the crossword. They should not refer to the reading texts, but may look at their notes. (It is, of course, up to you to decide how strictly this rule should be enforced!) 8. Go through the crossword in a final feedback round. 1

6 Worksheet B Student A The history of goes back a long time. The Celts were the first to celebrate October 31 st. It was the feast of the dead and was called Samhain (pronounced Sow-in). It was also the beginning of the Celtic winter, the Celts thought it was a magical time when the dead could come back to communicate with the living and take them back to the spirit world. People dressed up like evil spirits to protect themselves. The name is not Celtic. It comes from the Christian festival of All Hallows Day, also called All Saints Day, which is celebrated on November 1 st Student B is still an important celebration in Ireland. Traditionally people built bonfires and children dressed up in costume went from house to house singing songs or reciting poems to collect nuts and apples for their parties. Now, as in many other countries, children expect sweets and chocolate when they go from house to house. The most popular costumes are still witches, ghosts and skeletons.
