Table for Two Theme: Devotion, Faithfulness, Priorities Defending the world from bad drama one skit at a time.
Table for Two by high school students: Ginny Lee Ellis, Kristy Davis, Molly Pack, Whitney Firmin, Blake Rodman, Lee Boyd, Jenna Laird and Danielle King Revised by Eddie James What: This sketch tells the story of a typical teen who repeatedly does not spend the time with God that she promises. (Themes: Devotion, Faithfulness, Priorities) Who: God Cassie Waiter Amanda Samantha Christine Hostess When: Present day Why: Ephesians 3:16-17 Wear (Props): How: Audience: Time: [Restaurant] A table, 2 chairs, 2 place settings, [Cassie s house] A sofa (or chairs covered with a sheet to act like a sofa), a coffee table This skit uses a split-stage set-up: Restaurant/Cassie s house. You set up the restaurant with a table with two chairs, plates, glasses, etc. Cassie s house is set up like a living room with a sofa, coffee table, etc. If possible use lighting to focus attention of a certain side of the stage. High School Approximately minutes 2
The skit starts with God sitting at a table alone with an open chair next to him. NOTE: The audience should not know at the start that this is God, but just a guy waiting on a girl. Hostess: Hostess: Hostess: Hostess: Is there anything I can get you? No, I m fine. Are you waiting for someone? Yes, I am. She s running a little late isn t she? Yes, but she said she d be here and I m ready for her. Okay sir, I ll be here if you need me. As the Hostess exits the lights fade onto Cassie s house. Cassie, Samantha, and Amanda enter. Amanda picks up a magazine, sits down, and starts flipping through it. Samantha sits down on the other side of Amanda. I can t believe that game! Oh, I know! Yeah, we were like so close! (Cassie and Samantha look at Amanda with a confused look) The score was 73-6, Amanda! I know! It s like we still only needed like eight more home runs. We were playing football! 3
Well, that explains everything. Cassie and Samantha look at each other. Scene switches to the restaurant. God is still patiently waiting. Would you like to order, sir? No thanks, I ll wait for her a little while longer. Well, I was just thinking, you have been waiting since seven o clock, so I just thought you might like to go ahead and order. No, I m fine. Okay, would you like more coffee? Certainly. The scene switches back to Cassie s house. I m thirsty. Cassie do you mind if I get a drink? Oh no, that s fine. (Without looking up from magazine) I ll have a diet. Samantha gives Amanda a rude look. Do you want anything, Cassie? Yeah could you get me a Sprite? I ll be right back. Don t forget my diet! 4
Samantha raises her arm like she s going to hit Amanda and then exits. Cassie sits down next to Amanda making it look like she s channel surfing. Amanda is still flipping through her magazine. I can t believe this. I so know what you mean! I mean, all the money that is put into this. Really, you d think they d come to their senses. I mean two hundred stations and there s nothing on. I know how could they discontinue my lip liner? (She shows the magazine to Cassie) Just chew your gum Amanda just chew. All right. (Smiles and chews) Scene changes to the restaurant. Waiter comes back with the coffee. Here you go sir. Thank you. Waiter starts to leave, but then hesitates. He steps back to the table. I don t mean to pry No, go ahead. 5
Well, why do you bother waiting on her sir? Because I told Cassie I was available to her. I understand that, sir but she s stood you up three times this week alone. I know. Then why do you still wait? Cassie said she d be here. But she s said that before? I mean if I were you I wouldn t put up with that. Then it s a good thing you re not me. Sorry. (Pause) Why do you? What? Wait. Because I love her. Scene switches over to Cassie s house. Samantha enters with the drinks. She goes to sit down, but the only seat open is next to Amanda. Samantha pushes Cassie over so she wouldn t have to sit next to Amanda. By then Christin enters. Hey everyone. Sorry I m late. I had to go drop Michael off way out in the middle of nowhere. Oh, my gosh are you two like boyfriend/girlfriend? 6
Everyone gives Amanda a weird look. No. Anyway the house was so far aw (Interrupts) Did you like make-out? Everyone gives Amanda a weird look. What are you talking about? Come on you can tell us! He s my brother! I was dropping him off at a friend s house, perv. (Changes the topic) Anyway what have you guys been doing? Nothing. Yeah, we ve been waiting for you. Cool. Hey, Michael was telling me about this awesome party tomorrow night. Do you want to go? (All the girls answer yes except Cassie) Well, Cassie, do you want to go? Have you ever had that feeling that you re supposed to be doing something, or you re supposed to be somewhere, but you have no idea what? What are you talking about? We re all talking about a party, and you re talking about some Back to the Future movie. (Everyone looks at her) What? Scene changes back to the restaurant. It s ten-thirty, sir do you want anything now? 7
No, I m good. Well, seeing as she probably won t show up again, I ll just leave this with you. You can take care of it when you re ready. (He pulls the bill out and hands it to God. God pulls out his wallet.) Wow! Lots of bills there sir. She sure did miss out. Yeah, I m gonna give her a feast. (Hands Waiter a bill) Thanks for your help. Well I just want to say it s been a pleasure sir thank you. Same to you. (Waiter leaves, God sits back and looks around) Oh, Cassie Cassie. We could have had a great evening. Lights switch to Cassie s house. Anyway Cassie, are you going to go? Everyone begins to tell her to go. Lights are up on both sides of the stage. Conversation goes back and forth between the two places. Hostess: Shall I make a reservation for tomorrow? Well yeah I ll go. Yes, tomorrow. Same time. Hostess hands Him the reservation slip. Great. Hey, why don t we get a pizza? 8
Here, I ll call. The phone number is in the kitchen. C mon Christine, let s call. They both exit. Wait a minute does this place have a veggie, anchovy pizza? It s good for your skin! Guys, wait! She exits. Cassie is left on stage with God on other side. I know there was something I was supposed to do (She grabs her planner laying next to her. A piece of paper falls. She picks it up and reads it aloud.) Friday night, 7 o clock, quiet time. (She looks up and sees God.) Oh, I m sorry God. I completely forgot. You know I just got busy and the game I m sorry. Tomorrow we ll spend time together, I promise. Tomorrow night it s just You and me. What about now? (Uneasy) Now? Yeah. Cassie, you re time with me isn t just about you learning about me. It s also me getting time with you. You and I aren t just teacher/student, we re so much more. I like spending time with you. (Pause) What about now? They ll be in there arguing about pizza for a while. That s true. 9
She steps over to restaurant side. God pulls out a chair for Cassie, and she sits. (Calls out) I m ready to order now. Lights go out. The end. More drama resources at: 10
