2 About me Currently aged 25. Live at home with parents. Brother just graduated from university. Diagnosed at age 16. Hospitalised for six months. Currently working part-time in a care home.

3 The Three Key Terms PREDICTABILITY MOTIVATION UNEVEN COGNITIVE PROFILE

4 Early Years Attended mainstream school. Socially isolated from the outset. Was NOT a difficult child. BUT made social mistakes. Was better than most at academic subjects but worse at the creative lessons P.E., Art and Music Was also bad at anything that wasn t academic i.e. following instructions, playing games. This has continued throughout life UNEVEN COGNITIVE PROFILE

5 First Signs Felt humiliated when the teacher disciplined the class. Felt that if a teacher asked me a question to which I didn t know the answer they were picking on me. Struggling to work in rooms with fire alarms Hating any disruption in the class.

6 UNEVEN COGNITIVE PROFILE...he s a clever boy, he must know how to do it......of course he can, he s just doing it to wind me up... NEVER assume that an autistic person is too able for a task. BUT don t assume that ANY individual can t either. The concept of osmosis is important try and differentiate between academic ability and life abilility

7 Secondary School I attended a different secondary school to most of my peers from primary school. I knew which classmates I liked and who was going to hit me preferable to not knowing how people were going to act. I had one very bad incident with a peer. Different teachers had different teaching styles and different atmospheres existed in different classrooms. School rules were confusing Anxiety Lack of PREDICTABILITY

8 SPECIAL INTERESTS These are not obsessions to an autistic individual they are the most wonderful and important things in the world. Football, Politics, Radio, Public Transport. They are on our minds MOST of the time they are not simply hobbies. They provide PREDICTABILITY They are also the best and often the only means of MOTIVATION for an autistic individual. The greatest fear of any individual is to have their special interest taken away that s why people think it s an obsession!

9 KEY TERM RECAP PREDICTABILITY The invisible comfort blanket. MOTIVATION This is different in each person, but remember the motivators that work for you are at best ineffective and at worst useless. UNEVEN COGNITIVE PROFILE - The at times almost unbelievable distinction between different skill sets. Guaranteed to cause frustration for both carers and individuals.

10 The Breakdown Coming up to exam time. The PREDICTABILITY of school was going and this was frightening. There were too many choices. My UNEVEN COGNITIVE PROFILE was not taken into account others were helped make choices, I was not. Teachers assumed I knew how to revise actually I needed more help than most.

11 Breakdown Day The Bank Holiday family trip to Blackpool was when I became seriously ill. For years afterwards I blamed my condition on this one day and refused to accept there had been a run-up. I began to believe I was in The Truman Show. In the months that followed I said and did some of the most hurtful things any son can say and do to their parents I needed PREDICTABILITY.

12 Hospitalisation After much duress for me and my family I was admitted to a residential psychiatric unit. I slowly began to recover but in an autistic way. Again struggled to socialise with members of my peer group in informal setting but would then totally dominate group sessions because they were structured. Still didn t understand alpha males and thought anorexic girls were stupid. Whilst on this unit I was assessed for ASD Upon discharge was informed about ASD

13 The first day of disaster After my first day I was so scared by the experience of seeing anorexia and self harm first hand I vowed never to return. I was told if I did not return quickly my bed would be offered to someone else. My parents told me they could no longer look after me and the unit was the only option. By removing choice and creating PREDICTABILITY they made the adjustment easier

14 I m not a freak This was my reaction to being told I had an ASD. I did not understand how the condition I had always considered a sign of stupidity could possibly have anything to do with me. I was given no real indication of what to do to help myself imagine being told you have cancer and then being expected to find out about chemotherapy yourself.

15 Talking therapies and me Some of the initiatives employed to treat me were talking therapies I was encouraged to identify the thoughts I was having that no-one else was. This creates one of two problems, depending on the individual. Either: The individual is not able to understand that others think differently to him. Or: They realise others think differently but believe they are wrong.

16 Empathy This is probably the quality I would least associate with an ASD individual. Trying to create empathy in someone with an ASD is extremely difficult. I found much greater solace in statistical answers and short term rewards than in empathy.

17 Assessment for ASD We re the worst parents in the world I don t remember directly being assessed for ASD. Should we even have had kids Everything we ve done has been wrong My parents do.

18 Discharge One of the things that most surprised my parents was how quickly I was discharged. I didn t think I was better and I don t think they did either. On the day of discharge I was informed about my ASD.

19 Light at the end of the tunnel Tried unsuccessfully to do A Levels, then to work in a supermarket Lived and died by special interest Met Sue and Bernie and started giving talks

20 Giving talks I found the process of preparing for this presentation very therapeutic BUT despite how well I present now I could not do this without support. The presentation went well and made me feel good... something I was keen to repeat. The more I present the better I get but I will always need support just like a few months ago.

21 Reality bites My parents tried to encourage me to find work, but in truth it was only when I got my season ticket for Man Utd that my attitude really changed.

22 Preparation for Work Experience Taster day to meet staff and residents Informal chat with help from employment supporter to explain truthfully and realistically what I would and would not be able to offer Enjoyed work in part, but found some parts difficult, particularly the challenging behaviour of service users and community based activities.

23 The autistic burden of proof To prove to an ASD individual that: Either: Something good is going to happen Or: Something bad is not going to happen Both the nature and quantity of the proof must be much higher THE HANDBAG INCIDENT THE FOOTBALL MATCH

24 Mental Health Remember, the Mental Health of any autistic individual is often very difficult to maintain and what may seem like small changes to you can have a big effect on the autistic individual. Much of my success has come partly because I am able to recognise when such difficulties may be occurring, but much more so because I have a fantastic support network of parents, friends and colleagues who are able to spot the small changes, both good and bad, often before the individual is able to.

25 Conclusion Hopefully what I ve said today will help you in your work. I know from firsthand experience how frustrating we can be, but I also know that from the success I ve achieved and the achievements of those I work with and those further afield how rewarding our work can be.
