Since the discovery of the Forties Oil Field in 1971, Aberdeen s economic performance has been tightly bound with the black gold lying off its northern shores. Fast forward forty years and the industry remains buoyant: exploiting the new frontier areas West of Shetland and the Arctic; exporting expertise in deep water and subsea engineering; and enhancing extraction from maturing North Sea Assets. And while oil and gas is undoubtedly the lifeblood of the city, it isn t the whole story. Aberdeen also supports diverse and dynamic companies within food and drink, life sciences, academic and public sectors. Investment is also prevalent in the city a wealth of urban regeneration projects are underway, major office developments have sprung up in the city centre and Aberdeen Airport,one of the fastest growing in the UK, has unveiled a 100m master plan including a runway extension to enhance international travel. A modern, cosmopolitan city full of opportunity, this is a great place to live and work. Don t just take our word for it the Office for National Statistics recently named Aberdeen the happiest city in the UK! So what makes Scotland s third largest and the UK s most northerly city such a go-to destination? Perhaps it s the culturally rich heritage; award winning bars and restaurants; the designer, boutique and highstreet retailers found in the city s stylish shopping malls; excellent schools; world class sports facilities from the new Trump International Golf Links to an international standard swimming pool; the low crime rates making it a safe environment for families; as well as the fantastic career opportunities. Aberdeen also offers easy access to outdoor pursuits such as sailing, skiing and hill walking; and some of Scotland s most magnificent countryside is on your doorstep from nearby beaches and Royal Deeside, to the Cairngorms, and the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail. But that is really just scratching the surface you really need to come and find out for yourself! I m a relative newcomer to the team in Aberdeen, having returned to the UK from a long-term secondment to Moscow. I always envisaged myself returning to the London office where my career began, but after a visit to Aberdeen, something drew me to this city and this office. I could see that Aberdeen would be a fantastic place to live and work. Erika PwC 2

3 PwC in Aberdeen With a diverse client base from oil and gas producers independents, new entrants or oil majors, to family-run international oilfield service corporations, as well as public sector, further education and financial services. Which means there s always something interesting and challenging to get involved in within our Aberdeen office. Working across areas such as Tax, Audit, Transaction Services, Risk Assurance and Business Recovery, our talented team of specialists have extensive experience and deep industry specialism in oil and gas and service companies. Indeed, most of our work (around 90% by revenue) is with clients in the oil and gas sector. In the city, our clients are generally within easy reach of our Albyn Place office, enabling us to spend time with them as they strive to achieve their goals and aspirations. With many of our clients operating across the world, we often get involved in cross-border projects and refer work out of Aberdeen, with projects currently underway in regions as far away as West Africa, the Far East and the United States. We also encourage people in our team to work abroad for extended periods in leading oil and gas locations such as Houston in America, Perth, Australia, Moscow and Russia, or to travel to client sites to provide specialist support on international projects. The great thing about working in our Aberdeen office is the close-knit nature of the team. The work can be quite full on at times. When I walked into the office, I had no idea of the amazing people I was about to meet. The support I had from everyone around always made me feel part of the team. Octavio One thing I particularly enjoy about oil and gas and the Aberdeen office is the range of firms we get to work with everything from huge multinationals to independent UK businesses. My own portfolio includes a rich variety of clients including a large plc, a new plc and a small private equity business. Growth opportunities As a result of the ongoing success and growth of our practice, we re now looking to expand our team with opportunities within the Tax, Advisory and Assurance teams, and in specialist growth areas such as Risk Assurance and Corporate Finance. The vibrant nature of the office and our growing client base also means that we re able to provide career progression and development potential for successful applicants. 6 Building relationships and networks across the globe A case study PwC in Houston has a long-standing relationship with one of its audit clients a highly successful acquisitive player in the oil and gas sector. So when that US-based organisation recently acquired a group of companies whose operations are largely UK-based, it was keen for PwC to audit their accounts too. been sending more and more work our way. And that the key people involved have said they would wholeheartedly recommend PwC to others. While many of our client relationships are established and continue to be based here in Aberdeen, one particular project we ve been working on recently highlights the benefits of our global network and illustrates how we also work collaboratively with other PwC teams around the world. And, this is something we re continually developing. Up until that point, the group of companies being acquired had always been audited by one of our Big Four competitors, and were understandably apprehensive about entrusting their books to a new accountancy practice. Our challenge in the Aberdeen office, then, was to build a relationship with them quickly and familiarise ourselves with the deal and the various businesses involved. Outstanding results in our client satisfaction survey are a testament to our success on this project - our helpfulness, responsiveness and ability to add value being the subject of particular praise from the new client. But perhaps even more revealing is the fact that they have since These days, my role is less about the technical aspects of accounting, and more about building relationships with clients and bringing out the best in my team.
