The discrete Logic 7 technology in the four-door coupe delivers brilliant 360 degree surround sound from stereo recordings and now, for the first time, from modern 5.1 recordings. The upgraded Harman Kardon sound system in the new generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLS four-door luxury coupe provides a richer, more detailed and fuller listening experience than ever before. The Harman Kardon acoustics specialists have fitted the top-of-the-range model with a 510 watt total output amplifier system. The 350 watt DSP multichannel main amplifier is stowed neatly and discreetly behind the left side panel in the luggage compartment. In addition there is a separate 2 x 80 watt booster, mounted directly under the central subwoofer in the rear shelf. Comparison: The previous model had a total system output of 420 watts available. As well as increasing output by over 20 percent, the Harman Kardon specialists also reduced the thermal stress on the overall system by re-arranging the locations of the amplifiers: The radiated heat is much better distributed. This means the system - despite the higher output - will not experience thermal problems. In addition, the proximity of the booster to the subwoofer reduces the transmission distance, also enhancing the quality of the reproduction. Page 2 / 7

3 High-grade metal matrix loudspeakers The bespoke Harman Kardon loudspeaker configuration provides the basis for the full-bodied audio experience in concert-hall quality. Twelve high-performance, carefully tuned transducers are integrated in the four-door CLS, seven of them metal matrix speakers. The high-end components have diaphragms with a highly complex, three-layer sandwich structure. Aluminum is used as the backing material. Especially in the challenging mid-tone range, the metal matrix loudspeakers ensure a balanced frequency response and above-average realism in terms of music reproduction. In total four 43 millimeter tweeters are housed in the mirror quarter and in the rear door trim panels. In addition, the front and rear doors also accommodate the four 168 millimeter metal matrix wide-band transducers. The system is supplemented by the 80 millimeter metal matrix central loudspeaker integrated in the instrument panel. The 2 x 80 millimeter metal matrix surround speakers in the rear shelf round out the threedimensional sound. The powerful and dynamic bass sound is produced by the 260 millimeter subwoofer housed in the center of the rear shelf. The next generation of surround sound with discrete Logic 7 technology The basis for the faithful, three-dimensional surround sound is the innovative discrete Logic 7 technology. In order to achieve optimum sound in every seat, the acoustic specialists found 5.1 surround recordings a particular challenge. If these recordings were to be played back without adjustment in the car, only one seat would enjoy optimum sound results, the so-called sweet spot. 4 The discrete Logic 7 technology allows stereo and 5.1 surround recordings to reach their full potential in the car. The surround information is read from the sound carrier and is optimally distributed through the CLS system architecture, just as intended in the original master. The sound source is moved away from the individual speakers. This gives passengers, whichever seat they are sitting in, the impression of being in a much larger space with a broad sound platform. Digital, lossless signal transmission with DTCP Another important element of the high-quality sound achieved in the four-door Mercedes-Benz coupe is the digital DTCP encryption technology. Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP) means that all high-resolution formats can be transported en route from the sound carrier to the amplifier. In other words: the technology does away with the need to convert digital into analog signals. This means that multi-channel sound recordings in DVD- Audio 1, DVD-Video 2 or DTS -CD formats can be transferred to digital standards MLP, MLP 5.1, DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1 and PCM without loss in quality. In the end, the human ear counts Like every Harman Kardon sound system, there was, besides the detailed scientific acoustic evaluation procedure, one final test the audio system had to pass before approval: the human ear. After the simulation tests on the virtual model, the top acoustic experts employ detailed and direct audio comparisons. These, too, are performed step-by-step in the laboratory first and then in the car.
