2 Francisco the Fast Speedy LNG Incat Ferry Sets World First This winter down under, Australian shipbuilder Incat Tasmania will deliver their new 99m fast ferry Francisco named in honour of the first pope from the Americas. Much like the Buenos Aires-born Pope Francis, this ferry will also set a world first Francisco is the first RoRo of its kind to operate with LNG as the primary fuel. On top of that, she reached a lightship speed of 58.1 knots during sea trials. South American tourism company Buquebus contracted Francisco s build in November 2010 for operation on their River Plate service between Buenos Aires, Argentina and Montevideo in Uruguay. Two years after signing the contact, Incat Tasmania launched the vessel on 17 November 2012, to allow for completion of funnels, radar aerials and other works outside the main shipyard shed. Built at the Incat shipyard wharf on Prince of Wales Bay, Hobart, Tasmania, the 99m LNG ship has a capacity for 1,000 persons and 150 cars. She even features a luxurious fit out with a 1,100 m 2 duty free shop. Francisco is the eighth vessel Incat has built for Buquebus and their associated companies during their 20-year relationship. Ferry Godmother In a show of support, President of Argentina Christina Fernandez de Kirchner will officially christen Francisco as the ship s godmother. In true Incat catamaran fashion, the bridging section with the centre bow structure forward connects Francisco s two aluminium hulls. Each hull cleverly contains nine vented, watertight compartments divided by transverse bulkheads. Two compartments in each hull are primed for use as fuel tanks with an additional compartment primed as a longrange tank. 4 Made-to-Order Elevator A prime example of the level of craftsmanship that went into Francisco s interior Lift Emotion designed, delivered and installed Francisco s one-of-a-kind cylindrical elevator, as seen here. She is also the first high speed craft built under the HSC code, to be powered by gas turbines using LNG as the primary fuel and marine distillate for standby and ancillary use. Mr Clifford pointed out what this means for LNG in shipbuilding: Incat is excited about this project as it represents a significant step in the global move for natural gas powered ships to replace those operated with less environmentally friendly fuels. Passed with Flying Colours Sea trials on marine distillate diesel fuel commenced late March 2013 while sea trials on LNG commenced late in May. On Saturday 15 June, Francisco thrilled her designers. With the water ballast removed, and with both port and starboard gas turbines operating on LNG Francisco achieved 58.1 knots at 100 percent MCR (Maximum Continuous Rating). She exceeded her previous results achieved on 1 June when Francisco comfortably exceeded 50 knots at full power at a 1,460t displacement and maintained a steady 49 knots at 90 percent power while operating on marine distillate. Incat does not claim 58.1 to be the end point of lightship trials as there was a full load of LNG on board (two 40 m 3 tanks) in addition to about 35 t of marine distillate. Mr Clifford clarified: When we have less fuel on board, and delivery spares removed, we will see that speed go higher still in the shallow waters of the River Plate (Rio Plata). We are delighted with the efficiency of the design and sure that our customer, Buquebus, will be pleased with the results, enabling the ferry to compete with airline traffic on the River Plate route. 56 SBI 2013 Volume 7 Issue 3

5 Speed Explained Incat attributes Francisco s high speed to the combination of her wave piercing catamaran design, the use of lightweight, strong marine grade aluminium, and the power produced by the two 22MW GE LM2500 gas turbines driving Wärtsilä LJX 1720 SR waterjets. Even despite the extensive and luxurious interior that significantly increased the weight of the interior fitout, the Incat team diligently maximised weight savings during construction wherever possible. Mr Clifford praised Francisco s performance: This is certainly the fastest ship in the world... of course there are a few speed boats that could surpass 58 knots but nothing that could carry 1,000 passengers and 150 cars, and with an enormous duty free shop on board. Incat s previous fastest vessel was Juan Patricio, delivered to Buquebus in 1996, with a top speed of 53.8 knots. In fact, Francisco is the fourth Incat built vessel with service speed over 50 knots. Incat is responsible for all three past consecutive winners of the Hales Trophy, the Transatlantic Blue Riband record for commercial passenger ships. Luxuriously Technical Interior With an interior to match Francisco s performance, her passenger cabin includes tourist, business and first class seating. Not to mention, her luxurious interior includes the 1,100 m 2 duty free shop the largest shopping area installed on a fast ferry. And to shuffle passengers from floor to floor, Incat enlisted the help of Lift Emotion, who had previously delivered elevator solutions on several Incat vessels. Lift Emotion design and delivered a highly specialised elevator on board Francisco that is both visually and technically striking. As the company revealed, the challenge with this type of vessel is that the deck where guests are situated is placed on resilient mounts, resulting in movement between decks. Lift Emotion solved the problem with a sophisticated and rigid structural frame, fixed only to the lower part of the vessel. Interestingly, a 3,300mm portion of the elevator above the resilient mounts is completely free standing. Such an elevator, constructed with superb materials, would even feel at home aboard a superyacht. Meeting high safety and comfort demands, the company included an electronically controlled hydraulic system to ensure every ride is smooth for passengers of Francisco. Lift Emotion saw the project through to the end as they shipped the elevator trunk to Incat Tasmania, hoisted it into the ship in one piece and performed a two-week installation to get the elevator in commission (see inset). With her sophisticated interior, green technical prowess and record setting speed Francisco is well on her way to a life in the fast lane.
