1 Modules Open to NUS students in SEM 2 AY ) GEK1054/GEH1047 Music in the Global Context (4MC) This course is intended to provide a broad cross-cultural introduction to diverse musics of the contemporary world through contexturalization. The lectures, demonstrations, reading, listening, and concert attendance will provide an introduction to world music in contemporary life to the elements of humanly organized sound phenomena, which we call "music," on a global scale. A hands-on approach is a unique and rewarding way to learn about music; therefore students will actually play in several ensembles during the tutorial sessions. The lectures will be structured so that student interaction is a key component to the course. Students will have lecture groups responsible for contributing to class discussions using the NUS wiki as a means of organising group work. Assessments in the course will come from tutorial attendance and participation as well as lecture group participation, both in class and online, as well as through concert attendance and quizzes. 2) GEH1060 The Social History of the Piano (4MC) (open to all students matriculated from AY 2015/2016 onwards) An interdisciplinary study of how societies and different generations responded to the invention of the piano. This module focuses on the social history of the piano throughout the past three centuries, canvassing a wide array of performers, composers, supporters, manufacturers, heroes, politicians, teachers and students. Various expressions of ideologies from differing periods eventually revolutionized and efffectuated the versatility of the piano, shaping a legacy which led to the globalization of the piano, including China. Students will learn through lectures, readings, discussions, listening, playing, and attending piano recitals and masterclasses.

2 3) GET1019/GEM1029 Patrons of the Arts (4MC) This course is a conceptual and practical introduction to the complex networks that drive patronage, including multifarious kinds of patronage. Issues raised and debated include exploring money, religion, politics, social classes, and many other social constructs that influence what art people support, and why they, especially you, support different kinds of art. Students will need to grasp and evaluate critically each set of issues that drive and affect patronage of the arts, and demonstrate their critical understanding of the interplay of these factors through written assessments, classroom discussions, and contributions to blog postings related to the module materials.. 4) GET What, When and Where is Art? (open to all students matriculated from AY 2015/2016 onwards) This course explores the art through three different, but overlapping, questions: What is art? (including the polemics associated with this question). When is art? (ie, creations that interpreted as art, or not art, at different times), and Where is art? (ie, why something is perceived as art when it is in one setting, but is generally otherwise unnoticed). Visits to Singapore locations for case studies are required. Students will study and apply several disparate theories, and will also write their own. 5) SSY2223/GES1020 Western Music in a Singaporean Context (4MC) This module will look at the place of the Western Classical music tradition within the cultural life of Singapore. It will assess the impact of majority cultures (particularly from the Chinese, Malay and Indian communities) on the general reception of Western music, as well as on music written by Singapore-based composers. Students will be introduced to the principal figures in Singapore s musical development. The module will also chart the growth of music education in Singapore, both in the national schooling system as well as in private institutions and tertiary academies.

3 6) MUA 3210/3211 Chamber Singers (2MC) This performance-based module allows students to explore vocal production and choral technique through participation in a vocal performance ensemble. Students will participate in regular rehearsals, and will learn and perform choral music from the Renaissance to the Twentieth-century. Through this course, students will gain knowledge of diverse repertoire, composers, genres, styles and period performance practices. Students will learn fundamentals of vocal production, enhance existing choral technique and experience working together in a unique team ensemble. Students do not need any previous experience but need to be able to read music. Assessment is based on participation and professionalism during rehearsals and performances. Enrolment in this course is based on a successful audition to be conducted at YSTCM at Ensemble Room 2. Auditions for Semester 2, AY will be held from 11am-2pm on Monday, 9 Jan, and Tue, 10 Jan. Please sign up for auditions below on the Wiki page. Successful students will be preallocated the module. There is no need to bid for the module. 7) MUA1114 Introduction to Electronic Music (2MC) In this project-based class, students will learn the history, principles and practice of electronic music while composing works using original timbres created with software synthesizers, sampling devices and effects processors.

4 8) MUA1165 Music and Machines This module examines the use of machines to create music in the last 70 years. It focuses on the topics of synthesis, signal processing, live interactivity, and computer-aided composition, and introduces important repertoire that uses technology from this time period. Students will work in programming environments designed for musical applications to create electro-acoustic and algorithmic compositions. 9) MUA2270 Synthesis Theory (open to Year 3 and Year 4 students, only limited spots available) The module explores the techniques of digital synthesis and signal processing within the Max programming environment. In class activities and project based assignments address simple synthesizer and effects unit creation utilizing both time-domain and frequencydomain techniques. 10) MUH3203 Opera and its History (4MC) (open to all NUS students, only limited spots available) Please note that final exam is on 3 May at 9am Opera is a vibrant and vital practice in both historical and modern culture. This module explores the themes, sources, forms, styles and nature of opera from its beginnings in the late Renaissance to its ongoing development by modern composers, with particular emphasis on issues of performance practice, production, and social context. Through seminars, class discussion of reading and listening, and creative projects, students will explore stylistic and social developments in the history of opera and will sample representative works and composers in recorded and live performance. This module is open to all NUS students as a free elective. Students of musical, literary and theatre backgrounds will especially benefit from exploring the historical development, major works and composers, stylistic trends and social contexts of Opera. 11) MUH 3205 Chamber Music Since 1740 (open to all NUS students, only limited spots available) In this subject we explore central figures, genres, stylistic developments, and representative chamber works composed since Also considered are relationships between chamber music and broader cultural and social trends and issues; the changing roles of musicians in society; and different performance contexts. Students will learn to aurally identify chamber music from contrasting stylistic periods, and by different

5 composers. They will also acquire the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary for their own critical appraisal of, and independent research into the repertoire that they play. NUS students do take note that they should have some music background and should be able to play an instrument. 12) MUT1201 Introduction to Classical Music Composition The module uses the online course Write Like Mozart available on the Coursera platform as the basis of its content. It introduces students to strategies for style writing of European art music. Issues of harmonic progression, voice leading, and texture are addressed, as are relevant compositional concepts like repetition, variation, and elaboration. A blended learning module with video lectures and demonstrations, class time is dedicated to hands-on workshops. Simple compositions in the style of common practice European music form the bulk of the assessment. A familiarity with musical rudiments is highly recommended. Prior experience with composition is not required. NUS students do take note that prior knowledge of Western notation will be extremely helpful, and the class assumes the student already has prior knowledge of that. Please note that MUA3219/3220 World Music Ensemble is not offered in SEM 2.
