Baptism class is held the first Wednesday of the month. Bautizos en Espanol son celebrados el tercer Domingo del mes a las 12:30PM. Clase Primer Jueves de cada mes a las 7:00PM. FIRST COMMUNION & RECONCILIATION AND CONFIRMATION Two year preparation for First Holy Communion (also called Discipleship Program). Confirmation Program- Preparation for Confirmation is also a two year program. All youth 6th grade through high school are invited to participate. Classes meet on Sunday Mornings. POST COMMUNION PROGRAM Children meet every other Monday from 4PM till 6PM. Parents are invited to participate in a discussion group led by Father Neil Connolly on family values. This group meets while the children are in session. This program also has a section opening on Sundays! MARRIAGE Please call to make an appointment at least 6 months in advance of possible date. SACRAMENT OF THE SICK- Please call and let us know if a family member is sick and would like to be anointed.

3 Take Time for Advent! In our consumer crazy world, the effort to take time to reflect during the Advent season must be a clear and conscious choice on our part. It is too easy to get caught up in all the shopping and the holiday hype. We at St Francis de Sales have chosen to take time for the three Thursday evenings of Advent, Dec. 4, 11 and 18 to take one hour apart to pray, reflect and share together. We hope to make our celebration of Christmas more real and truly reflective of the wonder of the mystery of Emmanuel, God really with us in our day, in our world. So...come join us, Thurs evenings at 6:30... We will meet in the parish hall below the church...we will gather around the altar for a more informal, more personal, more interactive celebration of the daily Eucharist. We will take some time to share our thoughts on the scripture of the day. We will share Eucharist, as well as a light casual pot luck dinner together. Bring a sandwich or a salad to share. We look forward to praying these Advent days with you! Much Peace to you and all those you love. SFDS 20's & 30's Last Sunday we had a terrific gathering with some of the 20's & 30's in our parish. Lots of ideas were put out on the table...one in particular you might want to mark on your calendar no matter what your age is... Dec 20...a festive, holiday, ZUMBA class in our parish hall. We know we all need help losing the extra pounds from Thanksgiving and getting a bit more healthy before we sit down at the Christmas table. Details are being worked out just now, but we hope to offer the class around noontime for all who are interested in moving, getting healthier and jumping for joy (or Jesus?) during these holidays...so, save some space on your December calendar for your good health! SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: First Sunday of Advent Monday: World AIDS Awareness Day Wednesday: St. Francis Xavier Thursday: St. John Damascene Friday: First Friday Saturday: St. Nicholas; First Saturday Amahl And The Night Visitors Amahl and the Night Visitors by Gian Carlo Menotti will be presented in concert at St. Francis de Sales on December 13, 2014 at 7:00 PM. The St. Francis Choir and Cantors will be performing. The suggested donation for Adults is $25.00 and $10.00 for Students/Children. There will be a Silent Auction for two limited edition prints by Debra Tivens. The concert is a benefit on behalf of the Passionist Missionaries in Haiti. TAKING CARE OF OUR PARISH~STEWARDSHIP! In the last few weeks we have seen a gradual increase in parishioners signing up for PARISH PAY and we want to thank you for that! There are so many good reasons for using this method of electronic giving, most importantly as Kermit might say it s good to be green! Some of the other advantages for you are: easy, fast record keeping, simple to opt in or out (if you move which we never want you to ) and for us, it is less expensive and cuts down on unused envelope waste (there s that green thing again!) We do recognize, however, that some folks are more comfortable with the traditional envelope system and to all you who have recently signed up for parish envelopes, we thank you most sincerely as well. Our new envelope company will be mailing envelopes out in January. In the meantime, please feel free to put your Sunday donations in an envelope marked with your name and address so that your donation may be properly credited to you in our new program. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Each of the seven sacraments, like other aspects of the Church s pastoral plan, is an attempt to be faithful to the image of Christ we discover in the Gospels. Anointing of the sick is rooted in Jesus saving deeds of healing and even rescue from death. What is your favorite encounter of Jesus with a sick person? Often, it seems that Jesus would go at once to the person in a crowd who was in the most pain, in the deepest need. A man born blind, Peter s mother in law, a woman afflicted by years of uncontrollable hemorrhages, a little Roman girl beloved by her soldier father, a crippled man lowered from the rafters, and even a man who lost his ear to a swinging sword in the garden of agony. This list reads like an admissions chart in an emergency room, and perhaps that is the point. The whole human experience from childhood to old age, from sudden catastrophic illness to chronic debilitating conditions, is represented by those for whom Jesus has such great compassion. This we can name a treasure of tradition with a capital T. We are a people of compassion for our sick, who reach out in tenderness to listen, to keep vigil, to strengthen, to touch with reverence, and to anoint with precious oil. Rev. Las personas que quieren mas informacion sobre esto debe hablar con Fr. Neil. VELEN! Velen! Esta palabra ocurre dos veces en el Evangelio de hoy, situada en puntos estratégicos: al principio, y en el centro. Aunque técnicamente sea una parábola, el texto es bastante breve (cuatro versículos). La doble repetición de velen no deja lugar a duda de lo que trata este relato. A menudo pensamos en Adviento como un tiempo de espera, pero en realidad es un tiempo de vigilancia, una forma muy activa de esperar la llegada del Día del Señor. Ese es el Día, más que el día de Navidad, anticipado fielmente por la comunidad cristiana, ya que usa todos sus talentos y dones para este fin, como nos lo recuerda Pablo en la carta a los corintios. Cuando usamos estos dones en fiel espera y anticipación, nos hacemos como los sirvientes de la parábola, entregados a sus tareas, no esperando como vagos, sino encargados de la labor del maestro hasta su regreso. Que nuestro Adviento sea un tiempo en que reencaminamos o rededicamos nuestra vida y nuestra comunidad a esta labor, la fidelidad activa y diligente que el Señor espera encontrar. Copyright J. S. Every once in a while we come across a family trying to get back on their feet who could use some substantial support from us. If you would be interested in helping one family make ends meet during these significant holiday times please contact Jayne or Kathy at the parish office. We would love to make some families feel a little more secure in these difficult times. DECORATORS WANTED As you can see in the stores all around us, Christmas IS coming again and while we don t want to start decorating the church THIS early we are thinking about how to make our worship space as lovely as possible. Are you someone with an eye for decorating large spaces? Can you help us create a beautiful Advent/Christmas sanctuary? Please contact Kathy or Jayne if you are interested in working on our church environment for the holy days to come. Thank you. WATCH! Watch! This word occurs three times in today s Gospel passage. Moreover, it is placed at significant points: the beginning, the center, and the end. Though this is technically a parable, it is quite short (four verses). The threefold repetition of watch leaves no doubt as to what the story is about. We often think of Advent as a time of waiting, but it truly is a season of watchfulness, a very active form of waiting for the coming Day of the Lord. It is that day, more than Christmas day, that the Christian community faithfully expects, using all of our gifts and talents for this purpose, as Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Corinthians. When we use these gifts in faithful watching and expectation, we become like the servants of the parable, set to their tasks, not waiting around idly, but engaged in the master s work until his return. May our Advent be a time when we return or rededicate our lives and our communities to this work the active and diligent faithfulness that the Lord will expect to find. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
