2 SOME GREAT POINTS On an average every 3 out of 4 road accidents are due to colliding vehicles About 2 lakh people die worldwide every year in road accidents On an average a person living in cities like Hyderabad spends 140 hrs a year in traffic Most of the vehicles go into rags because they were not diagnosed properly

3 Introduction: Telematics: An amalgamation of telecommunication and information It is integrated with computers and mobile communications in automotive navigation systems. Widely used in vehicles. The term vehicle telematics has evolved by conveying information within road vehicles.

4 Automotive telematics: Application of telematics associated with automobiles. Solves many problems associated with automotive industry such as road accidents,lack of navigation to maps and so on. Also open doors for entertainment while driving with video streams and high speed internet connectivity.

5 Applications: Vehicle Telematics: Define connected vehicles interchanging electronic data. Providing automatic collision notification Road accident prevention Remote diagnostics Pricing auto insurance Tracking fleet vehicle locations Cold store logistics Recovering stolen vehicles

6 The Telematics monitored system is also capable of notifying any problems to the owner of vehicle via . The main advantage is to reduce road injuries and road traffic related deaths world wide.

7 Vehicle tracking: It is a way of monitoring the location, movements and behaviour of vehicles. It is achieved through a combination of GPS receiver and an electronic device (GSM GPRS modem) installed in each vehicle. The data are turned into information by management reporting tools in conjunction with a visual display on computerised mapping software

8 Trailer tracking: Trailer tracking is the technology of tracking the movements and position of vehicle s trailer unit. Method of returning the position data via Mobile communication network Geostationary satellite communications PC or web based software

9 Fleet Management: Fleet management is the management of company s vehicle fleet. Fleet management includes Vehicle financing and maintenance Vehicle telematics (tracking and diagnostics) Driver management Fuel, health and safety management It is a function which allows companies which rely on transportation in their business to minimize risks.

10 Satellite navigation: Satellite navigation in the context of vehicle telematics is the technology of using a GPS and electronic mapping tool and enable the driver of vehicle to Locate position --> Route plan --> Navigate journey

11 Mobile data and mobile television: Mobile data is use of wireless data communications using radio waves The above device can be fitted in the vehicle(fixed Data Terminal) or for use in and out of the vehicle (Mobile Data Terminal). In Mobile Internet,mobile data can be used to receive TV channels and programs in a similar way to mobile phones using LCD TV devices.

15 Intelligent vehicle technologies: Telematics comprise electronic,electromechanical devices operating in conjunction with computer controlled devices and radio transceivers Ex: robotics artificial intelligence systems Intelligent vehicle technologies commonly apply to car safety systems self-contained autonomous electromechanical sensors by generating warnings that can be transmitted within specified area

17 The other side of the coin It by far needs advanced technology It needs access like 3G and other sophisticated technologies A lot of research work is required Not so efficient for societies like India It may not suit everyone s pocket

18 Conclusion: Once Telematics comes into implementation there won t be any accidents, traffic congestions. Driving itself gets a new dimensioned definition.
