DESCRIPTION This service letter transmits Garmin Service Advisory No and Garmin Terrain Data Alert - Anomalies in Greenland Terrain Data, which informs pilots to use extra caution and awareness of the surrounding terrain when flying within 30 nautical miles of the following airports: BGCO (Nerlerit Inaat, Greenland) BGQQ (Qaanaaq, Greenland) BGSF (Kangerlussuaq, Greenland) BGSS (Sisimiut, Greenland) BGUQ (Uummannaq, Greenland) NOTE: A future database release for the G1000 System will correct this issue. 3 SERVICE ADVISORY NO.: 1107 Revision A TO: Owners and Operators of all Garmin Aviation Products using a Terrain Database DATE: March 01, 2011 SUBJECT: Anomalies in Greenland Terrain Data May Inhibit Operational Capability AFFECTED PRODUCTS All Garmin aviation products that use a Terrain Database (listed below): GNS 400W/500W and legacy GNS 400/500 series products GPSMAP 296/396/495/496/695/696/aera handheld products G3X/G300 systems G500/G500H/G600 systems G1000, G900X, G950, Cirrus Perspective, and Embraer Prodigy systems DESCRIPTION Areas of poor terrain data quality in Greenland (as described in Terrain Data Alert dated March 01, 2011) may adversely affect the TAWS/Terrain Alerting, ESP (Electronic Stability Protection), and SVT (Synthetic Vision Technology) functions listed below. TAWS/Terrain Alerting May result in nuisance alerts when approaching the vicinity of poor Terrain data quality, followed by the suspension of all Terrain alerts (the system may not be able to issue legitimate TAWS/Terrain alerts). ESP May become disabled. SVT May depict the aircraft as flying through terrain on the display. The Terrain Data Alert is accessible via the NavData Alerts link at PILOT ACTION Pilots should utilize extra caution and awareness of the surrounding terrain when flying within 30nm of the affected airports listed in the referenced Terrain Data Alert. Pilots may consider inhibiting TAWS/Terrain alerts when flying approaches into the affected airports. RESOLUTION Future Terrain Database upgrades will be made available to correct this issue. 5 Terrain Data Alert TO: Owners/Operators of all Garmin Aviation Products using a Terrain Database DATE: 01 March 2011 SUBJECT: Anomalies in Greenland Terrain Data DESCRIPTION Garmin has confirmed anomalies in the current Terrain Database 10T1 and all prior versions of the Terrain Database in the vicinity of the below listed airports. These anomalies may cause nuisance TAWS/Terrain alerts and affect other functionality such as Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT) and Electronic Stability Protection (ESP). For details on how avionics functions may be affected by this issue, see Service Advisory 1107 (accessible via the Service Alerts link at BGCO (Nerlerit Inaat, Greenland) BGSF (Kangerlussuaq, Greenland) BGUQ (Uummannaq, Greenland) BGQQ (Qaanaaq, Greenland) BGSS (Sisimiut, Greenland) PILOT ACTION Pilots should utilize extra caution and awareness of the surrounding terrain when flying within 30nm of the affected airports listed above. Pilots may consider inhibiting TAWS/Terrain alerts when flying approaches into the affected airports. RESOLUTION Garmin plans to resolve this issue in the 2011 Terrain Database update. WE STRONGLY URGE YOU TO MAKE THIS INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO APPROPRIATE CREW MEMBERS OR CUSTOMERS IMMEDIATELY! Garmin requests that the flight crew report any observed discrepancies related to database information. These discrepancies could come in the form of an incorrect procedure, incorrectly identified terrain, obstacles, fixes, or any other displayed item used for navigation or communication in the air or on the ground.
