1 Calcium Makes My Bnes and Teeth Strng Lessn Descriptin Students learn the imprtant rle f bnes in the bdy and discuss ways t keep their bnes and teeth healthy. They will learn the recmmended daily number f servings f calcium rich fds and be able t identify bth dairy and nn-dairy surces. Calcium rich fds frm the traditinal Native diet are included. Time required: 60 minutes Lcatin f lessn: Classrm Learning Objectives Be intrduced t the rle f bnes in the bdy and identify ways t keep bnes and teeth healthy. Learn abut the need fr 3 servings f calcium rich fds every day. Identify sme dairy and nn-dairy calcium rich fds, including fds frm the traditinal Native diet. Attitude and Behavir Gals Students will eat a variety f calcium rich fds. Materials and Preparatin *Chse 1 r mre f these 3 activities: Chicken Bne experiment, Tums in Sda experiment, r Catch the Calcium Relay Race: 1. Chicken bne experiment 1 glass jar 2 clean chicken bnes, 1 saked in vinegar fr 8-10 days and 1 nt saked Vinegar, enugh t fill the glass jar and cver the chicken bne Plastic glves, several pairs fr students t share Preparatin fr Chicken Bne Experiment Fill the glass jar with vinegar. Place ne cleaned chicken bne in the vinegar (leg r drumstick bne wrks best). Allw bne t sak in the vinegar fr 8-10 days befre the experiment. Clean and dry the ther bne. 2. Tums in Sda experiment Calcium carbnate tablets (like Tums brand) - 1 r 2 1 clear jar r cup Sda such as Cca Cla r Diet Cca Cla brand, abut 1 cup 3. 2 Fd Cards, printed and cut ut (laminated if pssible) - 2 sets 4 brwn paper bags, lunch sized r grcery sized Pen r marker t label the bags Preparatin fr Catch the Calcium Relay Race Activity Print and cut ut 2 sets f the Fd Cards. Label 2 bags Calcium Fds and label the ther 2 bags Other Fds. Identify a space inside r utside with ample rm, clear f bstacles, fr students t run the relay race. Calcium Rich Fds that Build Strng Bnes and Teeth Bnes and Yu Prepared vegetable snack f the week 1 fr each student Water t drink during the Class Warm-up water dispenser in the classrm and 1 cup r a water bttle fr each student Class Warm-up: Champin Cheer and Veggie Taste Test (5-10 minutes) Give each student a cup f water r ensure that they have a filled water bttle in frnt f them. Give each student the prepared veggie snack f the day. Lead the students in enthusiastically reciting the Champin Cheer. At the end f the cheer, drink water and eat the veggie snack tgether. Have students cmplete their Taste Test Observatins abut the vegetable snack f the week. Review f Last Lessn (2-3 minutes) Review the evaluatin questins frm last week s lessn. Evaluatin questins frm all lessns are listed at the end f the wrkbk. Class Discussin (10 minutes) Have any f yu ever brken a bne? Healthy, strng bnes are very imprtant! Withut ur bnes that make up ur skeletal system, there wuld be nthing t supprt ur bdies. Bnes need a mineral called calcium t help build them up. Calcium is in many f the fds we eat. What are sme ways we can help ur bnes and teeth t be strng and healthy? Eating fds with calcium and getting plenty f exercise are tw very imprtant ways t build strng bnes and teeth. Milk and dairy prducts like cheese and ygurt have lts f calcium. There are lts f ther fds that have calcium t. Green leafy vegetables (brccli, spinach, kale, ther greens), almnds, acrns and acrn stew, psle and sups made with bnes, cactus leaves, beans, canned salmn r sardines, frtified breakfast cereals and frtified sy milk r range juice als have calcium. 3 Activities (40 minutes) Building Strng Bnes and Teeth (10 minutes): Students cmplete a wrkbk page abut the bnes in their bdy. 1. Refer students t the wrkbk page, Bnes and Yu. Refer t the wrkbk answer key fr the answers. Read the instructins n the wrkbk page and have students fill in the blanks tgether as a class as yu g thrugh the fllwing discussin: a. Can anyne guess hw many bnes are in yur bdy? (Answer: 206!) b. Where is the smallest bne in yur bdy? (Answer: The ear. The bne is called the stapes. It lks just like a stirrup n a saddle. It is the size f a grain f rice, but really imprtant in helping yu t hear.) c. Where is the strngest bne in yur bdy? (Answer: It is in the tp f yur leg, called the femur. It is als the lngest bne in yur bdy). d. What d bnes d fr the bdy? i. Supprt the bdy. ii. Prtect the bdy. The skull prtects the brain. We need the brain t think! The rib cage prtects the heart and lungs. We need the heart and lungs t pump bld and t breathe. e. Calcium helps build ur bnes and make them strng. We get it frm fds like milk. Calcium Rich Fds: 3 a Day (15 minutes): Students cmplete a wrkbk page abut calcium rich fd surces. 1. Refer students t the wrkbk page, Calcium Rich Fds that Build Strng Bnes and Teeth. 2. Review fds that are a gd surce f calcium: milk, ygurt, cheese, sy milk and ther milks, leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, brccli, celery, almnds, psle and sups that are cked with bnes, cactus leaves, beans, canned fish, breakfast cereals, frtified range juice. 3. Have students draw and label their favrite calcium rich fd in the space prvided n the wrkbk page, Calcium Rich Fds that Build Strng Bnes and Teeth and answer the 2 true r false questins. 4. Hw many servings f calcium rich fds shuld we eat each day? (3) Wh has had 3 servings f calcium rich fds tday? What will yu eat fr the rest f the day t make sure yu are getting enugh calcium? 4 *Chse 1 r mre f the fllwing activities as time allws: Chicken Bne experiment, Tums in Sda experiment, r Catch the Calcium Relay Race. Chicken Bne Experiment (10 minutes): Students bserve a chicken bne that has been saked in vinegar t see what happens when calcium is pulled ut f bnes. 1. Put n a pair f plastic glves. Shw the vinegar saked chicken bne t the entire class. This is a chicken bne that has been saked in vinegar (a weak acid). Demnstrate hw it is bendy. What d yu think happened t the bne? (Answer: Calcium has been pulled ut f the bne by the vinegar. Vinegar is a mild acid) 2. Pass ut plastic glves fr students t put n befre tuching the bnes. 3. Pass arund the vinegar saked bne. Pass arund the regular bne that has nt been saked in vinegar. Ask students t make bservatins. 4. Discuss: a. Hw are the bnes different frm each ther? b. Can yu bend the bnes that have been in the vinegar? c. Why is it nt gd fr the bnes in yur bdy t be weak like the vinegar saked bnes? d. Vinegar has acid in it that pulls calcium ut f the bnes. If we dn t eat fds high in calcium, bnes can becme weak and flexible and easier t break. Tums in Sda (5-10 minutes): Students bserve a calcium carbnate tablet (like Tums) being brken dwn by acids in sda. 1. Place 1 calcium carbnate tablet in the sda (cke and diet cke wrk especially well). Watch the tablet fizz as the acids in the sda break dwn the calcium 2. Discuss: This tablet is made f calcium carbnate, the same substance in ur teeth. It s imprtant t chse calcium rich fds and drink water instead f sda. Even diet sda can break dwn yur teeth and bnes. Catch the Calcium Relay Race (10-15 minutes): Students play a fun relay race game t identify calcium rich fd surces. This can be dne inside r utside. 1. Divide the class int 2 teams. Give each team 2 bags; 1 labeled Calcium Fds and the ther labeled Others. Place 1 set f the fd cards fr each team- picture side up- n the flr at ne end f the rm. 2. Students stand n ne end f the rm. When it is their turn, they run t the ther side f the rm where the fd cards are placed. They select a fd card, run back t the team and place the card in the apprpriate bag (Calcium Fds r Others). 5 Evaluatin Questins (5 minutes) decide which bag t place the fd in. The next student in the relay may start nly when the fd card is placed in a bag. Once in a bag, the fd card cannt be switched t anther bag. 3. The teams finish when all the fd cards have been selected and placed in a bag. The first team t finish is nt necessarily the winner! Only if they have mre crrectly placed fd cards than the ther team will they win. If the slwer team has mre crrectly placed fd cards, the faster team will have t hand the win ver t the ther team. 4. G thrugh the fd bags f each team and discuss the prper placement f the fd cards. Refer t crrect answers here (These answers are based n a calcium rich fd defined as cntaining at least 100mg f calcium per standard serving): a. Calcium rich fds: Milk, Cheese, Ygurt, Cheeris, Brccli, Orange Juice (frtified- we ll assume it is), Spinach, Ice Cream, beans, almnds b. Others: Bread, Watermeln, Apple, Carrts, Hamburger patties, Trtillas, Rice, Eggs, Banana, Tast, Shrimp, French Fries, Ht Dgs, Tmat, Fry Bread, Peanut Butter, Pastries, Chicken, Cake, Pasta, Blueberries, Crn, Ptat, Meat, Strawberries, Crackers, Celery, Lettuce 1. Name 2 things yur bnes d fr the bdy. (Answer: supprt and prtect) 2. What happens t yur bnes if yu dn t eat enugh calcium? (Answer: they becme weak and fragile) 3. Hw many servings f calcium rich fds d yu need t eat every day? (Answer: 3) 4. What are sme examples f calcium rich fds? (Answer: any dairy prduct such as milk, cheese, ygurt, leafy greens such as spinach, brccli, almnds, frtified breakfast cereal, symilk, cactus leaves, sups made with bnes such as psle) 5. Besides eating calcium rich fds, what else can we d t build strng bnes and teeth? (Answer: exercise) 6. Hw much water shuld yu drink every day? (Answer: at least 6 cups f water a day) 7. Hw many fruits and vegetables shuld yu eat every day? (Answer: at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day) 8. Des gardening cnnect yu t yur culture and help yu learn new wrds in yur language?
