1 Greetings from St Bede s Retreats are an important activity in our calendar. At the beginning of the week the Year 13s had their retreat. Presenter David Kobler from his organisation YOURCHOICEZ led the day entitled A seminar for Men, where the topic of manhood was explained. Models of manhood, good and not so good, were featured and the boys were challenged to make good choices in their lives. The thorny issue of Pornography was also investigated and how this affects young men. It was described as the 3 A s Affordable, Accessible, Anonymous (in other words the perfect addiction). Research tells us that over exposure to pornography, which is becoming more prevalent because it is so more accessible, seriously stunts development having a major impact on men s lives. About 50 Year 13 parents attended David s parent night on Monday where he covered the same issues. Both presentations were received well by the boys during the day, and parents that night. The day finished with some real challenges for our young men: 1. For the rest of your life, whatever is easy don t do it do what is hard! 2. Realise that happiness depends on realising that life is not about you 3. Manhood is what happens when no-one is looking 4. In the end, it is only your commitment that will truly define you 5. Perfection isn t the point strong progress is 6. Acknowledge when you need help 7. Take responsibility for your own life 8. Get a mentor Challenging but wise advice! Enjoy the long weekend. 3 St Bede s World Challenge teams captured on film! View the video produced by World Challenge of our 37 boys and 4 staff on their service projects in Cambodia during January. One team was in the south of Cambodia at Kep Gardens, where locals attend free English lessons. St Bede s students built a fort in the play-ground and dug trenches so water could be provided by tap rather than scooped from barrels. The other group was an hour out of Phnom Phen, working in a local school building new classrooms, landscaping and working with the pupils. Dr Rachel Hawkey Head of Faculty Arts Rockquest Success Congratulations to the Year 11 band Panic Station for making it through to the Rockquest regional finals. The band Connor Kitto, Jake Fearon, Felix Hogers, Nick Klaver and Andrew Takanaka performed at the heats last weekend and obviously impressed with their original song. They will now perform two original numbers at the regional finals at the end of June. Variety Concert Well done to all involved in last evening s Variety concert. Excellent performances ranged from the Senior Choir and barbershop quartet before their forthcoming competitions, to newcomer Jed Lee on vocals and guitar, and a preview of the forthcoming musical Pippin with an item from Tim Maguire and JB Mabazza. The full house was evidence of the good reputation these performances have gained and the supportive crowd was greatly appreciated by the students. Big Sing Choir Festival The Big Sing choir festival takes place next week, with the College s choir Obedeance performing on Wednesday, 3 June at 10am. Notably, this year the day sessions are taking place in the newlyopened Knox church (corner of Bealey Ave and Victoria St) but there has been a change of venue for the evening concert. This will now take place at the Pro-Cathedral on Manchester Street at 7pm. Information has been received from the organisers regarding tickets: For the day sessions at Knox Church, entry is $5 per person payable in cash on the door only (No EFTPOS facilities are available) For the Gala Concerts at St Mary's Pro Cathedral, ticket requests should be ed to; CHCHTBS2015@gmx.com The should state; The evening requested - either Wednesday or Thursday The number of tickets, and what type ($15 adults / $10 concessions) The name of the person collecting the tickets. These will then be available for collection between from 6pm at St Mary's on the evening. Pippin tickets on sale next week Tickets for the forthcoming musical will be on sale after Queen s Birthday weekend. They will be available from the College office (and Marian College office for a couple of weeks) and must be paid for at the time of ordering. The prices are: $15/$10 (students).
