GIS and Maps WAC Bennett Library Procedure Guide Lesson 5: Working with Census Canada Data in an ArcGIS Environment: database cross platform compatibility and data migration Introduction Created by: Sarah E. Pearce, Peer Graduate GIS Resource Facilitator, Bennett Map Library, SFU 2012 Step 1- Download Census Cartographic Boundary Data from Statistics Canada Step 2- Cartographic Boundary File Sub-setting using ArcGIS-ArcMap software Step 3- Download Census Attribute Data as a.ivt table from Statistics Canada Step 4- Format Census Data table (.ivt) in Beyond 20/20 software and save as dbase table (.dbf) Step 5-Import the dbase (.dbf) into the ArcGIS software and then editing fields using the field calculator for join compatability Step 6- Join the bbase (.dbf )income attribute data table to the BC Census Tract Cartographic Boundary shapefile using ArcGIS-ArcMap software Step 7- Create a Thematic Map displaying 2006 median family income in the BC lower mainland Step 8- Export your finished map from the ArcGIS-ArcMap environment as a.tiff file Introduction The following guide demonstrates to SFU GIS and Maps library users how to create a thematic map working with Canadian Census data in ArcGIS software. In this exercise we will map 2006 Family Income within the province of British Columbia at the Census Tract (CT) level. Before you begin, ensure that you have the following software programs installed on your computer: 1. ArcGIS Beyond 20/20 3. WinZIP or 7-zip (file extraction software)

Step 1- Download Census Cartographic Boundary Data from Statistics Canada Statistics Canada 2006 Census Boundary Data Download website: eng.jsp Download file dialogue box: Step 1: Language--> English, click next Step 2: Format--> ARC/INFO.shp, click next Step 3: File Type--> Cartographic Boundary File, click next Step 4: Geography--> Census Subdivision (72.6 MB), click download Figure 1: Steps 1-4 of the download Cartographic Boundary File Dialogue Box on the Statistics Canada website it will be called gcsd000b06a_e.shp Make a new folder on your hard drive (C drive or whatever drive you are working on) for Lesson 1: right click new folder name folder Lesson 1 Move the zipped file you just downloaded from Statistics Canada into the Lesson 1 folder you just created on your C drive, right click on it and choose extract all Folder path example: Computer>Local Disk (C:)>Files>GIS>Lesson1

Step 2- Cartographic Boundary File Sub-setting using ArcGIS-ArcMap software Open ESRI s ArcMap software click on the Add Data button and navigate to the Lesson1 folder containing the gcsd000b06a_e.shp file and select it to be added to the map In the table of contents right click on the Cartographic Boundary layer file and select open attribute table

Once the attribute table is open, we are going to sub-set the file to only include British Columbia by using Select By Attributes, available in the top left hand corner of the attribute table The Select by Attbributes dialogue box should look exactly like below, to achieve this you will need to build your expression by clicking PRNAME, then clicking the equals (=) button, then clicking Get Unique Values, then clicking on British Columbia/Colombie-Britanique, then clicking Apply

In the table of contents, right click on the Cartographic Boundary file Selection Create Layer from Selected Features The newly created layer will appear in the table of contents as the gcsd000b06a_selection, right click on it Data Export Data

In the Export Data dialogue box, make sure you change the name of the file from Export_Output.shp to something meaningful such as BC_Census_Boundary.shp then click OK. Do you want to add this layer to the map? Click Yes.

In the Table of contents, you can now unclick the check marked boxes for all files except for BC_Census_Boundary and use the zoom in tool to drag and draw a box around BC to make it larger. Figue 2: Above example showing unchecking the layer file boxes for all layers except for the newly created BC_Census_boundary, where I have re-named the gcsd000b06a_e.shp file in ArcCatalog to Canada_CT_Boundary, which is something we will earn how to do in Lesson 2.

File Save As ArcMap Document Lesson One

Step 3- Download Census Attribute Data as a.ivt table from Statistics Canada We are going to download Census 2006 Income attribute data from Statistics Canada website: RP=1&PID=0&PRID=0&PTYPE=89103&S=0&SHOWALL=0&SUB=0&Temporal=2006&THEME =81&VID=0&VNAMEE=&VNAMEF Download the file: Complete cumulative profile, including Income and earnings, and Shelter costs Canada, Provinces, Territories, Census Divisions and Census Subdivisions B20/20 Unzip (extract all) the file in your Lesson 1 folder Step 4- Format Census Data table (.ivt) in Beyond 20/20 software and save as dbase table (.dbf) Open this.ivt file with the Beyond 20/20 software. In the Beyond 20/20 software browser, we will now format this table so we can export it as a database table (.dbf) and then import it for use in ArcGIS software. To accomplish this we need to reposition the data layout in the Beyond 20/20 program so that Geography (Census Tracts) are along the left hand side first column and the 2006 median income is along the top in the second column heading field. Moving the Geography field label is accomplished by highlighting and then dragging the header label Geography to the side of the viewer and then dropping it at the top of the first left hand side column.

Highlight the median income column from the menu click on item show Then we need to sub set this table to show only entries accosicated with British Columbia, we can accomlish this by clicking on the Dimension tab Code Reduce Text to find 59 OK (this is the Code for British Columbia)

Finally we will export out formated table from the Beyond 20/20 software and save it as a.dbf file. File Save as change file name to something meaningful (ex. 2006_median_incomeBC.dbf) List Files of Type choose dbase files save in your lesson 1 folder

Step 5-Import the dbase (.dbf) into the ArcGIS software and then editing fields using the field calculator for join compatibility Open your ArcMap.mdx file using ArcMap called ArcMap Document Lesson One Click on the add data button and navigate to your 2006_median_incomeBC.dbf add Right click on your dbase file in the table of contents layers open attributes table We fill now edit the Geography field of the databse table using the field calculator. The field calculator dialogue box must look exactly as in the figure below. Choose Geography, String, Left( ) and comma seven build your expression in the bottom box to read: Left([Geography],7) click OK

Step 6- Join the bbase (.dbf )income attribute data table to the BC Census Tract In the table of contents layer window, right click on the BC_Census_Boundary.shp Navigate to Joins and Relates Join Now, open your attribute table and ensure that the geography and income fields are appended to the end of the BC_Census_Boundary.shp We can now make a copy of this shapefile and the copy BC_2006_median_income.shp

Step 7- Create a Thematic Map displaying 2006 median family income in the BC lower mainland Right click on your BC_2006_median_income.shp properties Quantities Equal Interval (choose ten classes and a colour ramp) OK In the bottom left of the ArcMap screen there is a small square symbol for switching to the layout view. Click layout view

Further, to complete step 7, switch to layout view in ArcMap then Insert (each of these components to your map individually) 1. a map legend, 2. a north arrow, 3. a map scale text, 4. a map scale bar. 5. a map title For the map scale text dialogue box choose statement choose: Absolute Scale Scale Bar Selector Dialogue Box Properties Choose Kilometers Apply OK

Step 8- Export your finished map from the ArcGIS-ArcMap environment as a.tiff file From the main menu in ArcMap (top left of screen) File Export Map File name (Lesson One) Save as type TIFF (change resolution to 500 dpi, or 300 dpi if you want a smaller file size outout map) Example Map output:
