1 50th Anniversary Graphic Standards For 50 years Metropolitan State University of Denver has transformed the lives of students, served as a courageous leader in higher education and boldly advanced the well-being of metro Denver communities. Throughout its history, the University has been known as a gateway to opportunity through broad access, quality academics and education relevant to the Colorado economy. The yearlong MSU Denver anniversary celebration commemorates the creation in 1965 by the Colorado General Assembly of the state s first urban higher education institution.

2 1 50th Anniversary Logos 50th Anniversary Logos Officially recognized MSU Denver departments, programs, institutes, centers, clubs, teams and staff are authorized to use the Anniversary Logo to represent the University during the 50th Anniversary Year: July 1, 2015, through June 30, Materials bearing the Anniversary Logo may not be distributed prior to the start of the Anniversary Year or after the conclusion of the Anniversary Year without prior authorization from Marketing and Communications. When to Use the 50th Anniversary Logo The 50th Anniversary Logo should replace the formal University logo on all internal and external University publications and marketing materials whether in print or electronic form that will be circulated during the 50th Anniversary Year. Use the logo on: Brochures and publications Advertisements (print, digital, video, outdoor) Websites (those not using msudenver.edu templates on which the logo already appears) Admissions recruitment materials Employee recruitment materials Fundraising materials Electronic or print newsletters Event collateral (invitations, programs, etc.) Presentations signatures Heritage Message Upper 50 Graphic Roadrunner Symbol Formal Anniversary Logo Lower 50 Graphic Date Range Our Formal Anniversary Logo is our primary signature during the Anniversary Year and should be used on all formal applications. The Formal Anniversary Logo is the preferred option for external marketing materials. 3 If preferred, the 50th Anniversary Logo MAY be used on the following materials during the 50th Anniversary Year: Stationery, including business cards, letterhead (printed and electronic) and envelopes (order official 50th Anniversary stationery from Ricoh) Banners and table drapes Official promotional items Official social media accounts The 50th Anniversary Logo should NOT be used on the following: Business forms and documents Permanent signage Personal social media accounts Personal documents Unofficial promotional items Materials that will go into circulation prior to the start of the Anniversary Year Materials that will remain in circulation following the Anniversary Year How to Use the 50th Anniversary Logo Because visual branding often is the first impression we make on key audiences, it is paramount that we adhere to brand standards. Use the 50th Anniversary Logo OR the Formal or Informal MSU Denver Logo on marketing materials, but do not use both signature types on the same piece. For maximum clarity and visibility, take care to ensure that the logo is always readable and that other images or design elements do not visually interfere. The logo should appear in its entirety and should not be combined graphically with another emblem or symbol. Type appearing on the same surface as the logo should not touch the logo or be superimposed over it. The logo should not be rotated, altered or distorted in any way. The logo includes the superscript SM, which stands for service mark and indicates that the University owns these elements. Do not remove the service mark. The MSU Denver Roadrunner symbol and MSU Denver Wordmark are customized renderings and are proprietary to MSU Denver. DO NOT attempt to re-create any of our signatures by redrawing, typesetting or scanning them. Use only approved reproduction artwork requested from Marketing and Communications. To ensure consistent, accurate use of the MSU Denver logos, all logo imprints (including promotional items) require advance approval by Marketing and Communications. Heritage Message Tagline Use For the Anniversary Year, the Fifty Years of Transforming Lives Heritage Message is incorporated into the 50th Anniversary Logo. It may be used instead of the Lives Transformed, Communities Transformed or Higher Education Transformed taglines in external marketing materials. When a tagline does appear, continue to follow all University graphic standards for tagline use.

4 2 Area of Isolation The 50th Anniversary Logo components have a fixed size and spatial relationship to each other and should not be altered. To avoid crowding the logo with other imagery such as text, photography, illustrations, color breaks or rule lines be mindful of the area of isolation, which is an amount of space surrounding the signature that should remain free of other imagery. This minimum space requirement also applies to the page trim and folds. The area of isolation is proportional to the size of the signature, and its border is determined by measuring from the outer edges of the signature to the distances indicated in the diagrams below. 1M 1M 1M Formal Anniversary Logo The area of isolation, an invisible amount of space clear of other imagery, is proportional to the size of the 50th Anniversary Formal Logo. Its border is determined by measuring one capital M height from the outermost edges of the signature. Its border is determined by measuring one-half of the capital M height from the outermost edges of the signature. M 1/2M

5 Signature 3 Staging An organized layout significantly adds to the overall visual impression of our brand. This practice conveys a sense of order, professionalism, simplicity and ease and can be achieved when our 50th Anniversary Logo is consistently positioned relative to other imagery, such as headlines, text, photography, illustrations and other graphic components. Shown below are alignment options. These options will provide sufficient flexibility, yet retain a sense of visual organization to the layout in a variety of scenarios. 6 Minimum 4 Sizing The minimum acceptable size for the 50th Anniversary Logo is 1 as indicated below. Sizes are determined by measuring either the width or height (which are equal) of the overall 50 graphic. If a visual representation of the 50th Anniversary is needed but the display area does not permit sufficient sizing, you may use just the 50th Anniversary Wordmark with approval from Marketing and Communications. Use only approved reproduction artwork. Alternative formats may be available for use where the display area cannot accommodate the 50th Anniversary Logo. 7 5 50th Anniversary Visual Brand Color Use The consistent use of our 50th Anniversary Logo colors strengthens our brand. Referred to as MSU Denver Blue, MSU Denver Red and MSU Denver Gold, these specific hues should be matched as closely as possible. Their respective PANTONE, CMYK and RGB equivalents are indicated in the diagram below. Follow all University graphic standards for color. PANTONE is a registered trademark of Pantone Inc. The colors throughout this document may not match PANTONE. Refer to the current PANTONE Color Formula Guide for accurate hue and density match. Consult Marketing and Communications for color options for embroidered goods. Essentially, the color signal should be predominantly MSU Denver Blue with a representation of MSU Denver Red. The MSU Denver Gold serves primarily as an accent color.

8 6 Positive and Reverse Signature Selection Our 50th Anniversary signatures are created in both positive and reverse iterations. When the signature is darker than the background color on which it is displayed, it is referred to as a positive signature. When the signature is lighter than the background color on which it is displayed, it is referred to as a reverse signature. Within these two categories, there are both full-color and one-color options from which you may choose. The preference is to display the full-color version wherever practical. Often, only one color is permitted or practical. In these instances, the preference is to display the one-color version that uses MSU Denver Blue. If this is not a practical option, then the one-color black (or white on black) is approved. Neutral grays are also approved as one-color versions. For each signature version (formal or informal and positive or reverse), there is an additional option that includes a white silhouette behind the Roadrunner Symbol to ensure its clear legibility. Background colors and production limitations often dictate which signature version is best to use. The diagrams below demonstrate how the legibility of the signature is affected by the value of the background on which it is displayed. When in doubt, consult Marketing and Communications for the most appropriate signature selection prior to its implementation. Important Note: There are both positive and reverse renderings of the Roadrunner Symbol. Also, there is an option with a white silhouette included behind the Roadrunner Symbol to ensure its clear legibility.
