2 Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire and unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. Nelson Mandela

3 Who we are Ski Fit North Alberta was founded in 2009 with the goal of introducing Alberta s First Nations and Métis youth to the sport of cross-country skiing, and the transformative power of sport and play. EXSHAW SCHOOL - JANUARY 2016 In partnership with Olympic gold medallist Beckie Scott and driven by a committed team, our mission is to engage and empower Alberta s Indigenous children with sport, activity and inspiration.

4 PAKAN SCHOOL (GOODFISH LAKE FIRST NATION)- DECEMBER 2015 Our Goals: transforming lives through sport. Sport is universally recognized as an effective engagement tool for children and youth facing adversity, through which important life lessons and skills can be developed. OUR GOALS: To promote physical and mental health, activity and inclusion for Indigenous children and youth through an introduction to the lifelong sport of cross-country skiing. To teach basic technique and ensure students and teachers have a positive and supported experience on skis. To provide information and resources on the benefits of activity, nutrition and physical literacy. To be a knowledge source and assist communities in transitioning from introductory programming to community-owned sustainable programming. To inspire meaningful, lasting lifestyle changes in Indigenous children, youth and communities.

5 DRIFTPILE SCHOOL (DRIFTPILE CREE FIRST NATION)- JANUARY 2016 What we do Working cooperatively with schools and communities, SFNA engages children in regular sport programming, providing them with outdoor exercise and activity designed to maximize physical literacy, health and life skills. We do this though cross-country skiing, an overall body exercise efficient in terms of weather, geography and cost. Encouraged by SFNA leaders, coaches and volunteers, children are exposed to sport in a supportive, enjoyable manner designed to spark passion and inspiration for health and well-being. Our program delivery includes: Multiple scheduled school visits with coaching and curriculum advice designed to introduce and increase skill development. Assistance and guidance with creation of sustainable community-owned programming through coaching resources and certification. Equipment supply and assistance with long-term equipment ownership. Nutrition and mental health presentations. Guest Olympian inspirational speakers. Multi-Community Festival Day participation.

7 HEART LAKE SCHOOL (HEART LAKE FIRST NATION) - JANUARY 2016 Our impact The Ski Fit North Alberta delivery model is fundamentally dependent on the role of the lead facilitator and partnerships with schools. Our strategy is focused on 3 key measurable components - physical health, mental health and perceived value to schools and communities. 89% of students reported feeling happy after a ski day with SFNA 95% of students reported feeling like I matter after a ski day with SFNA 76% of students reported feeling proud of my new skills after a ski day with SFNA 65% of students reported a change in eating and drinking habits after the SFNA nutrition presentation 80% of teachers/educators noted positive changes in student behaviour (happier, more alert, calmer) after participation in a SFNA ski day 100% of respondents reported that having SFNA programming in their school was valuable 100% of respondents reported positive interest in having SFNA return to their school next year

9 Achievements 1,500 separate children and youth engaged 4,000 participants in program delivery 16 communities 41 separate school visits SFNA participants who qualified for and competed in the Alberta Winter Games: 4 Multi-Community Festival Day: 120 participants Ski Tour Canada (World Cup racing spectator experience): 28 participants After school ski clubs/teams in operation: 2 (40 participants) New coaches/leaders trained: 6 KIKINO SCHOOL (KIKINO MÉTIS SETTLEMENT) NOVEMBER 2015 Olympic visitors and inspirational guest speakers: 8

10 EMPOWER EDUCATE The combination of sport and inspirational role models and messaging was incredible. So amazing to see our students get outside and build confidence.
