Verslag 1 Preparation Exchange/placement application process When I heard I had the possibility to study abroad I immediately knew I wanted to do it. Mainly because I've heard so many great stories and I wanted to go and see it for myself, I wanted to be part of the amazing adventure. Of course there's a lot you have to arrange and take care of before you go, but it was definitely worth it. I first had to choose which country/city I wanted to go to. That decision was soon made: Spain! I love the culture and I wanted to beautiful language. And of course I love the sun. On top of that I liked the courses they gave at the university of Sevilla. I started to write my motivational letter. I think that was the hardest part, because I wanted my letter to be perfect and convincing. Fortunately it turned out great. I could go to the city I loved the most: Sevilla. After I heard I could go there I had to arrange a place to live. In my case it was very easy. Because my friend, who was also going to study in Sevilla, knew someone of whom we could rent an apartment. Besides that I arranged things like the Erasmus grant; made a financial budget/plan; subscribe for the university of Sevilla and taking Spanish classes. Counselling/support at home university The people at the International Office of the University of Utrecht were very friendly and open. They gave us a lot of information; organized some meetings and we could always go to them to ask for more information or to talk about some problems we had, for example with the subscription of the University of Sevilla. So we could go to Sevilla fully prepared. Academic preparation The requirement for studying abroad was to have at least 60 ECTS. Language preparation Because I went to Spain, where they don't speak English (really, not a word), I had to follow some classes to learn the language. I went to these classes at the James Boswell Institute. But unfortunately I didn't learn that much. That's why I choose to follow an intensive course at a language school, named Clic. I'm glad I did because I learned a lot, even though it was only for two weeks. Finances Besides the Erasmus grant of 800 Euros, I saved a lot of money for my stay in Sevilla. I worked almost all summer. I was happy that my parents also wanted to support me financially, every month. Because of my savings, the grant and my parents support I could live my life in Sevilla and not worry about the financial stuff. Study/placement abroad period Study programme/work plan (concerning content and organisational issues) My study field is pedagogical sciences, but in Sevilla I couldn't study in my field. I was glad I could expand my study with some (neuro) psychological courses on the faculty of Psychology. The organization in Spain is very different from the Netherlands. The people in Spain are easier and not very strict. That was the first thing we had a little problem with. Every person we asked answered differently. Nothing was clear; we didn't know where to go to get our papers or to sign in. Everyone is like 'manana manana'. In the beginning this was pretty stressful for us, because we wanted to arrange the things. But eventually they were very helpful and everything turned out good. One thing didn't turn out this great. We were told we had to follow 4 classes, but in the end we had to take 6/7 classes, because the credits were different from ours. I was really bummed when I heard that, because that meant I had to do much more then in Utrecht, but in the end it wasn't that much and I made it.

Academic quality of education/placement activities Because of the many classes I took, I had days like 8.30 till o'clock. Besides the hour table, I didn't like the way they teach. It felt more like a high school than university. I think the quality isn't that high in Sevilla. Some classes were too easy, even for me, while my Spanish isn't that good. Counselling/support at host institution/organisation The coordinator of Sevilla was very friendly and he really helped a lot. The problem is again that they think they have like a lot of time, everything can wait. So I had to wait a lot when I made an appointment or when I had to arrange things. Transfer of credits My results will be transferred/ ed to the international office of the University of Utrecht and they will give it to the examinators. Or the office people or the examinators will change my credits to ECTS. Student life Welcome/orientation programme My friend and I went to the wrong welcome meeting. That's why we missed the meeting for the Erasmus students. But I'm glad the Erasmus group organized a lot of events/party's where we could meet up with other students. That was great! Accommodation As I already said before, my friend knew someone who has an apartment in Sevilla for the summer. And we could rent his apartment for this period. Leisure/culture The first weeks my friend and I were like real tourist. We tried to discover all the nice and beautiful things Sevilla offers. I think we saw most of Sevilla and his culture. And after these first few weeks we met people from Sevilla and Erasmus students with whom we did a lot. The people from Sevilla taught us how to live a Spanish life: the best food and tapas, the amazing music, the places to go and have fun! And with the students we travelled around, had many parties and we just enjoyed our time there. Suggestions/tips For all the students who are thinking about studying abroad: don t think anymore, just do it. It's an amazing experience. I can't explain how awesome it was, you really have to experience it yourself. And while you're there, don't panic, don't stress, but enjoy. Mangle with people all over the world, taste a bit of other cultures, meet amazing new friends, travel and find your second home. Conclusions Would you recommend this host organisation/destination to others? Please explain I would definitely recommend this destination. Sevilla is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been, it's a big city while it feels so homey. It has a great culture and the people are so sweet. The university on the other hand isn't really good of quality, but it has his advantages to get acquainted with another system, another way of teaching and the way they fill in their time. Besides that, my teachers were great people and I loved their character. They were so nice and they were so interested in us, Erasmus students. It was also nice that in some classes the teachers really wanted a relationship with the students. And in the Netherlands the teachers are more distinct. Do you have any additional advice or comments? Please don't hesitate, it will be an amazing time!

Verslag 2 Preparation Exchange/placement application process When I heard about the possibility to do a part of my study abroad, I was very interested and enthusiastic. Before I started my study I always hoped for such a possibility. At my university it was requested to write a letter about my motivation to study abroad. I had to fill in a couple of forms about my study plan and my financial plan. I had the possibility to give my preference of the country and city for my period abroad. I handed these forms in and a few weeks after the deadline I heard I was selected for a period abroad in the city Sevilla. I was very happy because the city Sevilla was my first choice. After this news, I had to subscribe at the university of Sevilla and after a few weeks (this period was quiet long, because of the slowness of the universities in Spain) I was transferred to the university of Sevilla, so everything was organized. In the summer of 2010 I had the possibility to subscribe for the Erasmus grant. The only thing I had to do was filling in some forms at the internet. I thought I would get this grant for sure but because of the nationwide cuts this wasn t sure anymore. But I was lucky and I was in time to get the Erasmus grant. Counselling/support at home university At home we got a lot of information before our period abroad. A few meetings were organized to give information about the possibilities to study a period abroad and we were in contact with the international office if we wanted to get more information. But sometimes the information they gave wasn't the same as the information the people of Sevilla gave. But finally there weren't real problems. The people of the university of Utrecht were sometimes a bit slow in answering, but that's understandable, because there are a lot of exchange students. Academic preparation It was required to have at least 60 ECTS at the university in Utrecht. Because I wanted to study abroad in my third year and I passed almost all of my courses the two years before, this wasn't a problem for me. Language preparation It was required to follow my study in Spanish. At highh school I followed a Spanish course for two years. But this was only twice a week, so not really much. That s why I decided to follow a course at the James Boswell institute to improve my Spanish language. Of course I learned something in this course, but I thought it wasn t enough to follow my whole study in Spanish. That s why I made a plan to go to Sevilla a month before my study started. In this month I followed an intensive language course at a language school named CLIC. This school was really nice. And I also learned a lot just by living in Spain. Finances Before leaving to Sevilla, I worked a lot to safe some money for my period in Sevilla. Next to this, I applied for the Erasmus grant and received this grant (800 Euros in total) before leaving. I also received 80 each month as a compensation for my OV-card. In addition, my parents gave me a financial support, like they also do in the rest of my student life in the Netherlands.

Study/placement abroad period Study programme/work plan (concerning content and organisational issues) Because I heard that there wasn t a department in Spain relating to my study, pedagogical sciences, I could follow courses at the department of Psychology. This possibility was perfect for me because I wanted to expand my study field. Before leaving to Sevilla I made a plan about the courses for my study abroad. I looked at the website of the university of Sevilla for the possible courses and made a schedule. When I arrived at the university of Sevilla we got different information about the possible courses. I thought I only had to follow four courses, like in the Netherlands, but actually I had to follow almost 6 or 7 courses to acquire 30 ECTS. After this information I made a new plan and constructed a new schedule with 6 courses. Academic quality of education/placement activities After all, I concluded that the academic quality at the university in Sevilla is a lot lower than at the university in the Netherlands. Sometimes I had the feeling that I was attending high school again. I had to follow a lot of classes, like days from 8.30 till o clock. In my eyes this isn t like a university level, but more a extreme high school day. The quality of the courses were quiet different. Some courses were easy, while other courses were really difficult. The level and quality of the courses was really divergent actually. Counselling/support at host institution/organisation As always in the Spanish culture, I had to wait a lot of time before I got information or had the possibility to make an appointment with our Erasmus coordinator. But this coordinator was really helpful and friendly and made sure the Erasmus students made the right decisions and understood everything. In my opinion I got enough support, apart from waiting a lot of time, but that s a part of the Spanish culture and I accepted this. Transfer of credits Till now I don t have all the results of my exams in Sevilla. So I have to wait with the transfer of credits till I get my results. But what I know about it is that the university in Sevilla will sent the results in a form with credits to the international office of my university in Utrecht. The international office will give this form to the examinators, who will transfer my credits into ECTS. Student life Welcome/orientation programme At the university of Sevilla they planned a welcome event. Before this event I asked if this event was also meant for Erasmus students and the people of the organization said it was. We went to the meeting but afterwards we heard it was a meeting for first year Spanish students. Because of this we missed another real important Erasmus meeting. So I got the wrong information and missed because of this an important event. But after all, it wasn't a real problem. Accommodation My father has a colleague with an apartment near by the centre of Sevilla. In this apartment I lived with a friend for my period abroad. Leisure/culture In the weekends I made some trips to cities in Spain, including Granada, Cadiz, Huelva and Faro (Portugal). In Sevilla I lived as good as possible in Spanish style, what means: eating a lot of tapas, having dinner late in the night, having siestas, being outside a lot and hang out with other international students. I have seen the most important and beautiful places and things of the city. I was present at the most Erasmus parties. These parties were a perfect opportunity to meet other international students and sometimes Spanish students.

Suggestions/tips For all the students who are going to study in Spain: don t stress and relax. You have to wait a lot of time for almost everything and every single thing takes a lot of time, but eventually everything will be fine. Accept and integrate in the Spanish culture and enjoy your time abroad as much as possible because it has to be one of the most beautiful and amazing periods in your life! Conclusions Would you recommend this host organisation/destination to others? Please explain Yes I will recommend this host organisation to others. I wouldn't recommend this host organisation because of the academic or education quality (because the quality isn't really high), but because it's such another system compared with the system in the Netherlands. I think it's very useful and interesting to see the system and habits of the university in another country. In addition, the staff at the university was very friendly and helpful. Do you have any additional advice or comments? As I said before: just relax and enjoy!
