1 Language Policy LANGUAGE TEACHING POLICY AND OPTIONS Language arises out of need and purpose, as an instrument of thought, personal expression and social communication. The linguistic diversity of India poses a range of opportunities. Today, we know for certain that bilingualism and multilingualism confers definite advantages. That makes the choice for the national and the regional language and the effort is to make children literate for both survival and pleasure. Therefore, the Orchid school exposes children to not only the English language but the official language (Hindi), regional language (Marathi) and a foreign language, presently German for classes V and above Approaches to language teaching: The Whole Language Approach - Literacy development includes listening, speaking, reading and writing. All these components are interrelated since they all involve words. Whole language is an attempt to get back to the basics in the real sense of that word to set aside books and tests and invite children to engage in more meaningful learning. Aim To help children establish a strong foundation of language for effective future learning. To give a rich language experience from activities such as reading stories aloud, sharing books, seeing environment filled with meaningful print, reading and writing for pleasure and purpose. To integrated language with other subject areas of the curriculum. Music, Science, Art, Social studies, Math and other subjects provide opportunities for emerging literacy. With the whole-language approach, teachers create an environment and then use the best tools available to teach the components of language. In whole language approach within classrooms, there is much to talk about, listen for, write about, and read about. Without meaningful experiences, listening and reading cannot make sense, and one cannot certainly talk or write about things that are not understood. We are opposed in early learning years to monotonous skill and drill tasks, to isolated textbook use, to laborious notebook writing that takes away too much time.

2 Therefore for young and early learners, the more experiences they have, more joyful and better the learning will be. Emerging need and Introduction of a language: There has always been a growing importance for foreign languages, especially in today's era were communication has reached its peak and the world has become a smaller place. As globalization is the new reality for the youth, an increasing number of youngsters are inclined towards learning foreign languages. Learning a foreign language gives students an opportunity to appear for international examinations like TOEFL, JLPT and NYU-SCPS etc. Due to growing economic relations between India and various countries of the world, knowing a foreign language gives one the much-needed edge. Pune s emergence as an industrial hub, especially in the automotive and engineering sectors, resulted in an increased collaboration between German and Indian firms and thereby, gave rise to the demand for German language experts. Career options in the field of translation and industries are plenty. Time has come that TOS also acknowledges this need to learn a foreign language. The school is introducing German language in the scholastic Curriculum from the academic year Languages at different levels English being the 1 st language is compulsory at all levels (Nursery to XI). Hindi is the 2 nd language and is compulsory from Jr. K.G. to class VIII. For class IX and X the students choose a 2 nd language from the options available. XI-XII English * Refer to Note for New Admissions The Language Program will include the following at different levels: For Sr. K.G. Hindi (Functional level) Listening to the language Attempting to speak Basic recognition of letters and familiarization with sounds. For Std.1 Hindi - as a 2 nd Language Consolidation of the above Attempting to read words without matras Introduction to matras Comprehension and speaking of language Marathi as 3 rd language (Functional level) Listening to the language Attempting to speak For Std. II to IV Hindi - as a 2 nd Language Mastery of recognition of letters Learning construction of words with matras and meanings Early writing programme which includes construction of simple words and sentences Comprehension, sentence construction in reading and writing Marathi as 3 rd language Listening to the language Attempting to speak Basic recognition of letters and familiarization with sounds *The language depth will advance as per levels.

4 For Std V to VIII Hindi - as 2 nd language Literature Language Grammar Process writing Marathi - as 3 rd language Literature Language Grammar Process writing German as 3 rd language Listening to the language Attempting to speak Basic recognition of letters and familiarization with sounds. Early writing programme which includes construction of simple words and sentences Comprehension, sentence construction in reading and writing PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: For Marathi and German - as 3 rd language (Composite) The students of class V will select the 3 rd language between Marathi and Composite language. The Composite language consists of - German (50%) and Marathi (50%) The student can try the composite language structure for one year in class V. In class VI the students make a final choice between composite language (German and Marathi) and Marathi. The teacher may guide the choice based on the performance in the assessments. No change in the 3 rd language choice can be made after class VI. The student will continue with the same choice up to class VIII. Current Scenario - For academic year : From the academic year , the students of class V, VI and VII will have a choice between Marathi and Composite language (Marathi + German) The option of Composite language is not open currently to class VIII to X. The students of class VI and VII who have been exposed to German as a hobby class (after school class) for the past ½ years will be encouraged to choose Composite Language. No change in the 3 rd language choice can be made after class VI. The student will continue with the same choice up to class VIII.

5 The students of class VII ( ) will select a 2 nd language for class IX in the academic year from the options Hindi, Marathi and German. The current ( ) class VII students will be exposed to German language for 4 year by the time they appear for the Class X Board Papers. For New Admissions in TOS Children seeking admission at TOS for class V to class VII need to clear entrance test for Hindi. Children seeking admission in class VIII to class X has to achieve passing grades in Hindi as per the CBSE norms. Children coming from other countries or another state who have no exposure to Marathi language, and joining TOS at a higher grade (Std VIII and above) can be exempted from learning Marathi and can choose to take up another language as an option (German / French / Sanskrit). However, in such cases, home tutoring has to be provided for teaching of the language. A visiting faculty will come in once a month to answer queries and provide guidance for assessments. The faculty will also prepare and administer test papers for Formative and Summative Assessments. For 2 nd language in Class IX & X According to the CBSE bilingual policy, students are allowed to choose a second language. One should have studied the language for 4-5 years prior to Board exams, to opt for the language from the options given for 2 nd language. Options for 2 nd language are Hindi/ Marathi/ French/ German/ Sanskrit. School will provide regular teaching for Hindi and Marathi. However, for other languages, home tutoring has to be provided for teaching of the language. A visiting faculty will come in once a month to answer queries and provide guidance for assessments. The faculty will also prepare and administer test papers for Formative and Summative Assessments. For students with learning difficulties Students with diagnosed difficulties may drop one or both languages, depending on their formal diagnosis and recommendation from remedial teacher. Special needs children (from Std. VIII, IX and X) are exempted from learning the 2 nd language for the Board Exam. This is subject to approval letter from CBSE after submission of relevant documents. These students may replace the 2 nd language with Information Technology. After School Language Support Classes The deserving students of classes IV to VIII are provided after school support as a Language Bridge Gap Program from 3:00p.m to 4:00p.m.

6 This Bridge Gap Program aims towards grooming the students in the respective language. It will include small group or one to one guidance by the relevant teacher. With parent support the student is expected to reach the grade level learning requirement and ideally should be weaned off the programme in a years time. If the student requires support in 2 nd and 3 rd language, he/she will be given support in 2 nd language (Hindi) initially and will receive support in 3 rd language in the following year.
