CommUNIty The University of Worcester in your community Student Services
Welcome to the CommUNIty The University of Worcester would like to welcome new and existing residents of St John s to this latest edition of the CommUNIty booklet. For those new to the area, we hope you enjoy living in this diverse and vibrant suburb of Worcester where a mixture of families, professionals, elderly residents and students live side-by-side in our local community. The University continues its commitment to working collaboratively with local residents, Resident s Associations, Neighbourhood Watch Groups and the students of the University to ensure that the members of the community who are representing our University are responsible neighbours to those living around them. Following on from the feedback received about the first edition of the CommUNIty booklet, in this latest edition we hope to provide you with more useful information about the exciting opportunities available at the University and how we can work together to ensure that St John s is an enjoyable place for all to live together harmoniously.
GYM AND SPORTS FACILITIES FOR HIRE The following facilities are available at the St John s campus: Fully equipped fitness suite 3G Astro Turf and sand-filled hockey Astro Turf (both floodlit) Sports centre with a six-court sports hall, dance studio and gymnasium. For more information on our sports facilities and details of hire fees, please visit the website: FACILITIES FOR PRIVATE HIRE The University of Worcester offers a range of venues for conferences, seminars, presentations, meetings and celebrations. See more at: UNITOTS NURSERY Unitots nursery is situated on the St John s campus and is an Ofsted registered nursery for babies aged 3 months up to school age children. It is available for community users, staff and students and is open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 50 weeks of the year, (excluding Bank Holidays, University closed days and staff training days). Achieving an Outstanding Ofsted report on the last two inspections, it is set within a safe, stimulating, secure environment with access to a large outdoor play area including a forest school. Children are supported by a highly motivated and experienced staff team, providing high quality care and education. For more information, visit:
BIKE SHOP ON CAMPUS The University of Worcester works closely with the local charity Spokes to provide students, staff and the local community the opportunity to purchase pre-loved refurbished bikes or to have their bikes repaired by their qualified bike specialists. They are generally open on campus every Wednesday 12-2pm or 12-1pm during the University vacation periods. BIKE MARKING The University PCSOs and Safer Worcester Partnership run a number of cycle marking events at The Hive where you can get your bike marked with a traceable liquid. This carries a unique forensic code which is registered to an address or location. For more information on the dates when this event takes place please contact the PCSOs (contact details are provided later in this booklet).
CAR PARKING IN THE LOCAL AREA Please park considerately, ensuring that driveways and dropped down curbs can be accessed at all times. Pavements should remain accessible especially to those in wheelchairs or pushing prams. Drivers are reminded that roads should be accessible to emergency vehicles and refuse trucks at all times. GOOD NEIGHBOURS Don t forget that your neighbours may keep different hours from yours, and that excessive noise can be disturbing at any time of the day or night. You may not want to sleep, but there may be young children, working professionals or elderly residents nearby who don t want to be kept awake. It s important to remember that although not everyone will share your values in terms of what is important to you, there is a common expectation that you will all be treated with respect and each individual will behave in a considerate manner. Be considerate to your neighbours: Keep windows and doors closed to avoid disturbing others Wait inside for taxis, and encourage them to call or text you when they arrive, rather than sounding their horns If you are out in your garden, remember to keep your voices down. Noise carries, particularly in the early hours of the morning.
Please tear out these middle pages to keep for future reference. RUBBISH AND RECYCLING The majority of the houses in St John s are provided with a bin collection service; a green one for recyclable waste and a black bin for rubbish that will go to landfills, which are collected on alternate weeks. To find out more: SEPTEMBER M T W T F S S OCTOBER M T W T F S S green bin recycling black bin recycling For the exact day that your bins/refuse bags will be collected, please check the Worcester City Council webpages: selfserve.worcester.gov.uk/ wccroundlookup Your collection day may change when there is a bank holiday. Please check the following webpage for upto-date information: www. worcester.gov.uk/bankholiday-collections NOVEMBER M T W T F S S Don t forget that rubbish should only be placed outside of the property on the day of collection and bins should be taken in as quickly as possible after they ve been emptied.

USEFUL CONTACT DETAILS To report a disturbance as it is occurring: University PCSOs and Security staff Telephone: Non-emergency Police number: Telephone: To report issues with rubbish and waste and ongoing noise issues: Worcester Regulatory Service Website: and accumulation-of-rubbish-nuisance wrsenquiries@worcsregservices.gov.uk Telephone: To contact a representative at the University: Student Support and Wellbeing Service studentlife@worc.ac.uk Telephone: University Police Community Support Officers pcso@worc.ac.uk Telephone:
UNIVERSITY POLICE COMMUNITY SUPPORT OFFICERS (PCSOS) PSCOs Alun Jones and Natasha Harris have extensive experience liaising between members of the local community to encourage cohesion and to address any concerns that residents may have about students living in private accommodation or student behaviour in general. Representing both West Mercia Police and the University of Worcester, they would be happy to discuss any matters with you. Noise nuisance can severely impact the wellbeing of local residents and we are committed to working with the University and PCSOs to formally resolve on-going serious noise issues where previous efforts to do so have proved unsuccessful. Investigations would take place to determine whether a statutory noise nuisance exists and if so, a noise abatement notice would be served. Not all types of noise are actionable as statutory nuisances and some others may be difficult to assess as such. For example, noise from slamming doors or shouting may be more readily defined as anti-social behaviour and therefore addressed by other partners. Noise nuisances actionable by us include but are not limited to, noise arising from loud music, televisions or computer gaming, DIY and barking dogs. Further information on all aspects of noise nuisance is available on our website.
STAYING SAFE IN WORCESTER Worcester is a very safe city to live with low crime levels compared to other cities. However, it is always sensible to be cautious and to take preventative action to protect yourself from becoming a victim of crime. Make sure your front and back doors are locked at all times, even when you are in the property, just popping to a friend s house or you know someone else is in the property. Close windows when the property is empty, especially those on the ground floor or accessible on the first floor. Ensure that valuable items are not placed in full view and can t be reached through an open window. Consider purchasing a time delay switch for lights. When you re out or away these will give the impression that someone is inside the property. When walking around the City, consider your surroundings. Make sure you stick to well-lit paths where you are likely to see other people, remove earphones so you can hear people approaching you and don t flash valuable items such as mobile phones or MP3 players around. Why not join your Local Neighbourhood Watch group? This is an excellent way to find out about what is going on the local community and to support those living around you to prevent crimes taking place. Visit the webpage; for more information.
SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN ACCOMMODATION The Students Union can support students by offering information and advice to students in all types of accommodation - whether there are issues with letting agents, landlords or even housemates. For any issues during your tenancy contact the SU for advice studentsunion@worc.ac.uk VOLUNTEERING Students of the University of Worcester have contributed nearly 32,000 volunteering hours in the academic year 2015/16, volunteering in local community organisations, University projects, national charities and overseas organisations. Volunteering is an excellent way to develop new and existing skills, do something that you love and to give something back to the local community. These skills look great on a CV and have contributed to the excellent graduate employment rate that the students have achieved at the University of Worcester. If you are a student who wants to get involved in volunteering, or logging volunteering hours, or you run a community group or charity that would benefit from student volunteers then us at SUVolunteering@worc.ac.uk Thank you for organising the volunteering day and for the work done by your students. It really was appreciated and as part of the work done in the winter, will make a big difference to the ongoing improvements we are making to the wood for wildlife. - Worcestershire Wildlife Trust I volunteer because it gives me a chance to give back to the community - Debra Doyle, Archaeology and Heritage Studies student
