1 PINAL COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT BOARD OF GOVERNORS Central Arizona College Minutes of the Regular Meeting Tuesday, - 6:30 p.m. Maricopa Campus A101 Maricopa, AZ Members Present: Dr. Debra Banks, Gladys Christensen, Rick Gibson, Dan Miller Absent: Jack Yarrington I. CALL TO ORDER Board President Christensen called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. II. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Dr. Banks led the Board in the Pledge of Allegiance. III. APROVAL OF MINUTES Upon motion of Dr. Banks and seconded by Mr. Miller, the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of August 16, 2016 were approved as written. IV. CALL TO THE PUBLIC Shelley Gillespie, thanked the Governing Board for their support on the screenwriting and filmmaking workshop held on September 15, 2016 at the Maricopa Campus. Roger and Shelley Gillespie, Directors of Copa Shorts Film Festival presented an interactive screenwriting workshop from 9am noon, where attendees experienced a start to finish process for screenplays. V. AADGB REPRESENTATIVE REPORT No report. VI. PINAL COUNTY GOVERNMENTAL ALLIANCE REPORT Mr. Gibson stated that the ADDGB met but was unable to attend. Dr. Janice Pratt attended so that a quorum was present to vote for a Treasurer. The passing of Mr. Bob Flatley left the seat vacant and the purpose of the meeting was to elect a new treasurer. The next meeting is scheduled for November 2, VII. REPORT FROM CENTRAL ARIZONA COLLEGE PRESIDENT A. Legislative Update Dr. Elliott reported the following Legislative update: o Attended the Governor s Press Conference on Achieve60 AZ A state-wide goal to increase the number of Arizonans with a post-secondary certificate, credential or degree by the year 2030 Anticipated legislation to support the key initiatives of Strengthening K-12 pipeline Practices and policies to reduce time to completion Expanding access Aligning workforce needs with education to close the skill gap Page 1 of 5

District Update Dr. Elliott reported to the Board the following District updates: o CAC s Strategic Vision Outcomes Report - Highlights At 70% CAC s fall to fall retention rate is higher than the national average of 53% The number of students transferring from CAC to an in-state four year institution has increased by 50% over the past 5 years. 43% of CAC students represent an underserved racial or ethnic group which is 8% higher than the percentage of those populations in Pinal County. The Arizona Community College average is 39%. 74% of CAC student credit hours are earned online, at night or weekends, and in openentry/open-exit formats. The Arizona Community College State average is 63%. CAC s net price of attendance is 10% of median household income in Pinal County. The Arizona Community College average is 16%. 93% of CAC students pass national licensure exams for occupational programs as compared to the Arizona Community College average of 90% and national average of 83%. o The semester is off to a good start with enrollment of 5,726 students. o Enrollment at the Maricopa Campus has grown from 597 students in the Fall 2014 to 645 this Fall. o CAC is offering to assist ITT Tech students with the closing of ITT. A handful of students have reached out to CAC. C. Correspondence Dr. Elliott reported the following correspondence: o Student recognition of the Dietetic Program. o Recognition of the hard work of Larry Miller in the IT Department o CAC student, Mark Creech, was chosen to represent Future Business Leaders of America as the Western Region Vice President. o Student recognition of the excellent teaching of Dr. Derrick Span, Professor of Sociology and Philosophy o Student recognition of Professor of Chemistry, Diane Beecroft o Recognition for Sandra LasherZires, TAACCCT Grant Advisor. D. Association Reports 1. Support Support Staff President, Hazel Rossi, gave the following report on behalf of the Support Staff Association: Support staff held a used book sale and the proceeds provided enough funds for 2 scholarships to CAC students for their State Board exam fees to become licensed nursing assistants. Support staff is currently conducting a winter charity drive which began September 19 th and will run through November 10 th. Items will be distributed to organizations supporting the homeless in Pinal County. Support Staff if currently planning for Development Day which will be held February 21, On behalf of the Support Staff Association, Ms. Rossi thanked the Board and President Elliott for their continued support. Managerial and Technical MTSA President, Paula Prock, reported that the Employee Group Presidents have met together as a group and are working with President Elliott and look forward to a great year. Ms. Prock recognized MTSA employees that are volunteering their time with the Pinal County Sheriff s Office. Lisa Koehring, Director of the Dietetic Education Program has presented on dietetic education to incarcerated women at the Pinal County jail. Melissa Busby, Director of Childhood Education will also be volunteering to work with the program. 3. Faculty Faculty Senate President, Dr. Ruth Butler, stated that Faculty are encouraged by President s Elliott s inspiring, innovative and empowering leadership style, and the opportunity to work with her in creating a desirable work environment in every department at CAC. Faculty are in the early stages of re-examining the scope and work of the Faculty Senate. The Faculty Senate recently formed short-term committees who will engage in research, policy review, bench marking, identifying best practices, problem solving and proposals, specifically in the areas of rank and promotion, right-sizing of classroom and committee work that will enhance participation in shared governance. Faculty are in the fifth week of the semester and are very busy teaching multiple courses to students, many at multiple campuses. On behalf of Faculty, Dr. Butler thanked the Board for their service and commitment to CAC. 4. Student Leadership Daniele Piceno with the Student Leadership Organization at the Maricopa Campus shared upcoming activities and events at the Maricopa Campus. On behalf of Student Leadership Ms. Piceno thanked the Board for their continued support. Megan Purvis, Director of Student Affairs at the Maricopa Campus gave a presentation on Maricopa Campus updates. Highlights included: Student Orientation which began March 9, 2019 with 11 total orientations and 147 participants Fall Semester Welcome Week and Parent Orientation Cassandra Holcombe, CAC Alumni 2016, All USA/Arizona Scholarship Recipient Upcoming Community and Campus Events VIII. BUSINESS AFFAIRS A. Monthly Budget Report Mr. Wodka, Vice President of Business Affairs reported on the monthly Budget Report for the month of August 2016, which shows the District s general fund expenditures and committed funds are at 69.88% of total budget. This is a.54% increase from August 2015 which was at 69.34%. Two months into the fiscal year the College is where we should be. B. Review of College Bids RFQ #: meddespense Unit District Budget $28, Page 3 of 5

Higher Learning Commission Standards Dr. Mary Kay Gilliland presented a continuation of the Higher Learning Commission Standard Criterion 5 which focuses on resources, planning and institutional effectiveness. X. DISCUSSION WITH POSSIBLE ACTION ON ACADEMIC CALENDAR Dr. Mary Kay Gilliland presented to the Board the Academic Calendar for review and approval. Upon motion of Mr. Gibson, seconded by Mr. Miller the Academic Calendar was approved unanimously. Upon motion of Dr. Banks and seconded by Mr. Gibson the Consent Agenda items were approved unanimously. CONSIDERATION OF CONSENT AGENDA (Approved Consent Agenda items are shaded in this manner.) XI.
