The Revelation! Pt. 14 The Fall of Babylon Chapter Eighteen 03/08/2015 Pastor Don Lawrence In chapter 17 we saw the destruction of the Great Prostitute, which, in verse 5 of that chapter, is also referred to as Babylon the Great. As we discussed last week, the Great Prostitute aspect of Babylon the Great is in reference to false religions and the worship of false gods. It is in reference to the spiritual infidelity of people on earth. As chapter 18 discusses the fall of Babylon the Great, the focus is more on economics, commerce, materialism, and things of the world. This chapter is a very somber chapter. It is somewhat a funeral dirge. It marks the end of the world as we know it. The reality is that most of the world today puts their faith in their investments, their savings accounts, in their material possessions, etc. In chapter 18 we ll see that all of those things come crashing down. Revelation 18:1-3 1 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. 2 With a mighty voice he shouted: "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird. 3 For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries." 1. The pronouncement - Fallen The pronouncement is that Babylon the Great is fallen. In fact, to emphasize the point, the word fallen is repeated there in verse 2. The pronouncement is made by an angel coming down from heaven. But not just any angel, this one is described as one with great authority. Some assume that he is one of the archangels, perhaps even Michael. But his identity is not given.
It is interesting that the earth was illuminated by his splendor. Remember back in chapter 16, when the 5th bowl of wrath was poured out, darkness enveloped the earth? The brilliance of this angel is thus magnified as this angel appears. Verse 2 tells us the real source of influence for this world-wide organization. Demons and evil spirits are the driving force here. We have talked about the antichrist and the false prophet, this is their domain. This is the result of their influence. In verse 3 we are reminded of the reason for the pronouncement of Babylon s downfall. The beginning of verse 3 says that all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. As we learned last week, the adulteries are a reference to their spiritual unfaithfulness to the Lord. The verse goes on to say that merchants grew rich with excessive luxuries. This excessive materialism is also a form of spiritual unfaithfulness. 2 Timothy 3:1-4 1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God Their spiritual infidelity is not only replacing God with false gods and idols, but also replacing God with things, material possessions, riches. They have replaced their love of God with their love for these things. That is a spiritual infidelity of a different sort. Instead of false Gods, it s excessive materialism. This issue was also addressed way back in chapter 3: Revelation 3:17 You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.
Just as the Great Prostitute had seduced many into false religion, others are seduced by materialism and consumerism. This leads to their downfall. But first, a plea is made: Revelation 18:4-5 4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say: Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; 5 for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes. 2. The plea - Separation In verse 4 God s people are encouraged to come out of her. In other words, to separate themselves, to NOT participate in the unfaithfulness, in the immoral activities, in the excessive materialism, etc. Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Don t conform. Don t just go with the flow. Don t be a chameleon. Don t allow the world to determine your morals and your priorities and your belief system. Separate yourself from the world and align yourself with the Lord! 1 Peter 1: But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." The world doesn t determine right and wrong for us. God does! God has revealed his standards through the Holy Scriptures. That s why the Psalmist wrote, Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. God s Word tells us what is right or wrong. Not the world. Not congress. Not even the Supreme Court. Just because something becomes legal doesn t make it right. Where God has spoken, that becomes a moral absolute.
We are NOT to conform to the world s moral standards. We are NOT to conform to the ways of the world. We are NOT to conform to the priorities of the world. We ARE to conform to God s morals, God s ways and God s priorities! Verse 4 says come out. Separate yourself from any of the evils of the world. Because ultimately, there will be consequences for those who practice evil. We see this in the next three verses: Revelation 18:6-8 6 Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Mix her a double portion from her own cup. 7 Give her as much torture and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts, 'I sit as queen; I am not a widow, and I will never mourn.' 8 Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her. 3. The penalty - Judgment Notice the expression at the beginning of verse 6: give back to her as she has given. How would it make you feel if you knew that you determined your own standard of judgment - the standard that would be used for or against you on the day of judgment? But you couldn t just arbitrarily choose. Because, of course, we d all choose a very lenient standard. Total, absolute, complete forgiveness. Free pass. No. What if our own standard of judgment was determined by the way we treat others. That s the essence of what verse 6 is saying. Give back to her as she has given. Jesus hinted at this same standard for future judgment: Matthew 6: For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Jesus also said, Matthew 7:1-2 1 Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Look also at the Book of James: James 2: Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment! Judgment is not a very popular topic, yet, it is a reality that everyone of us will ultimately face. Hebrews 9:27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment. 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. All, everyone, without exception. Back here in Revelation, the end of verse 8 says that She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her. Judgment will be a terrible thing for those who are on the wrong side of the Lord. But here s the good news! Romans 8:1 There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Why judgment? What is happening here in Revelation 18? What are some of the things which lead people away from the Lord.? Let s take a look: Revelation 18:9-11
9 "When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her. 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry: "'Woe! Woe, O great city, O Babylon, city of power! In one hour your doom has come!' 11 "The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes any more 4. The paraphernalia - Materialism Paraphernalia is just a fancy word which basically means, stuff. Verse 9 mentions her luxuries and verse 11 mentions their cargoes. The kings of the earth and the merchants of the earth are weeping and mourning because of the stuff in the city that has been destroyed. First of all, the kings were discussed in the last chapter. Chapter 17, verse 12 tells us that there will be ten kings. These ten kings of this one world government, along with all the merchants who are getting rich, will weep and mourn because their goods, their stuff, has been destroyed. What are some of the things we are talking about? What is this stuff? Revelation 18: Cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble; 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and bodies and souls of men. That s a lot of stuff! What a catalogue of opulence. This is not a list of the basic necessities of life. Verse 3 called them excessive luxuries. These things became their God! The bottom line is, they are very materialistic. That s their focus. That s their concern. Verse 11 says that there is no one to buy their cargoes. No one to buy their stuff. Their customer base has been killed. Their clientele no longer exists. And so, they weep.
But they don t weep over the loss of life. They weep over the loss of their material possessions and the loss of their customer base from whom they can become wealthy. Read on: Revelation 18: "They will say, 'The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your riches and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.' 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn 16 and cry out: "'Woe! Woe, O great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls! 17 In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!' They are concerned about all these material goods. They need to hear the words of Jesus: Mark 8:36 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? How many have sold their soul to become rich? How many have sacrificed everything for the sake of material gain. How many have lied, have cheated, have cut corners? All for stuff. Stuff that is temporary. Stuff that is fleeting. Stuff that you can t take with you. Once gone, it s gone for good. 5. The permanence - Never again Starting in verse 21 on through verse 24 we see the permanency of Babylon s destruction. As we read these verses, look for expressions such as: never to be found again will never be heard again Will never shine again Revelation 18: Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, and said: "With such violence the great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again.
22 The music of harpists and musicians, flute players and trumpeters, will never be heard in you again. No workman of any trade will ever be found in you again. The sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again. 23 The light of a lamp will never shine in you again. The voice of bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again. Your merchants were the world's great men. By your magic spell all the nations were led astray. 24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of the saints, and of all who have been killed on the earth." Everything that we take for granted in day to day life... music, work, jobs, turning on a light, people getting married...it all ends. In Babylon the Great, it will never, ever be heard from again. Forever is a long, long time. As we mentioned last week, Babylon the Great is symbolic of all the world s great cities, of the world economy, of the world system, eventually of the one world government. But it all comes crashing down. Fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great. This marks the end of the world as we know it. Next week we ll discuss chapter 19. Next week Jesus returns! (When Jesus returns, don t you want to be found in church?! You don t want to be found on the golf course when Jesus returns. You don t want to be found out on the lake when Jesus returns. You want to be found in church when Jesus returns!) Next week, in chapter 19, Jesus returns! Christ s return is what the Book of Revelation has been building toward. This is what the entire Bible leads up to. In fact, this is what all of history has been heading toward! The triumphant return of Jesus Christ. That sets the stage for eternity. Those who know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior will be with Him forever. Forever is a long, long time. What is your eternal destiny?
