1 Turn Book Reading into a Conversation OWL (Observe, Wait, Listen) Check what you will do Observe Pause to see what my child is interested in, for example, before/after turning a page, after commenting on the story or illustration, after asking a question Wait - Look expectantly at my child to show that it is his/her turn to say or do something Listen Pay close attention to what my child is saying Follow the child s lead Let my child set the pace with questions and comments Spend more time on ideas or pages my child really likes Respond to what my child says and does with enthusiastic comments and questions Use comments to make my child s message more complete Keep the conversation going Ask questions that encourage my child to answer, for example, about his/her interests, experiences and opinions Wait and look expectantly after asking a question Use comments (not just questions) and wait expectantly After trying your Plan, think about how your child participated.
