1 American Literary Survey I 45 SEMESTER 5, MODULE 1 American Literary survey I attempts to cover as many representative American authors as possible, from the early colonial period to the end of the age of romanticism. The main responsibility of the student in this course is to read completely and understand well the assigned texts. All students are expected to read the texts before they are dealt with in class. 2 Advanced Research Technique 45 SEMESTER 5, MODULE 2 This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts related to research into language learning and teaching. It develops the practical aspects of empirical research with focus on how to collect data based on empirical research especially language classrooms. It also describes how to analyse the collected data, both quantitative and qualitative. 3 Introduction to American Studies 45 SEMESTER 5, MODULE 3 The course surveys American Studies as an interdisciplinary academic program in the USA, and deals with its evolution in the world. It covers a variety of cultural products and practices: literature, history, thought, etc. This course invites the students to debate American studies perspectives in national and global contexts. Native American relations to the land, the European conquest of the Americas, the development of American civic life and political culture and the ongoing African American struggle for freedom and equality, immigration as a constant in national life, the distinctions between mass culture and popular culture, the promise of American life, violence as a persisting national woe. We ll examine these themes through literature, historical writing, music, art, film, architecture, and political economy in the United States Nunan, D. (1992) Research methods in language learning. 4 Media Studies in the US 45 SEMESTER 5, MODULE 4 The objective of this module is to invite the students to learn how to develop a critical thinking with regards to media in the US. The course is focused on the forms and effects of media: books, radio, film, television, photography, print, digital and electronic media and how media -in all its forms- can shape the public opinion. This course examines: -aesthetics and form of media communication; -the history of media; -ethics and effects of media in the arena of policy studies, including privacy and copyright; -issues of race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, and identity in media industries; -the social impact of media on public opinion and culture; -the relations between media and the law free speech issues, the commerce and regulation of media in the public sphere 4
