1 Most Grade Levels Scientific Method And The North American Museum of Ancient Life Before coming to the museum a thirty-minute discussion will help increase the educational experience for children. Students can learn the steps of the scientific method as they participate in the following discussions and activity. Question Research Hypothesis Test Conclude Question: Research: Hypothesis: Test: What is a scientist? What are some different fields of Science? What is Paleontology? What does a Paleontologist do? A paleontologist studies life in the past by examining fossils, layers of rock, geological time, and other evidence of ancient life. According to most scientific beliefs: How old is the earth? When did plant life first appear on the earth? When did animal life first appear on the earth? When did dinosaurs first appear on the earth? How long did dinosaurs exist on earth? What is extinction? How did the dinosaurs become extinct? What types of animals survived the extinction of dinosaurs? What animals appeared after dinosaurs but before man? Pick one of the research questions above and reform the question into a statement.
2 Visit the North American Museum of Ancient Life This is the largest exhibit of dinosaurs in the world. As you explore the museum and participate in many hands on activities make sure to check your hypothesis and see if the museum makes your statement true. Conclude: Scroll down to see an extensive list of activities students can participate in during their visit to the museum. Hold a brief discussion about the students visit to the museum. Give them the opportunity to share what their favorite part of the field trip was and name at least one new piece of scientific information they learned. Encourage students not to duplicate other answers. We are excited for you to interact with our exhibits at the North American Museum of Ancient Life. Below is a list of student activities available to your class during your visit to the museum. In addition to this list of interactive activities, there are multiple computers and touch and feel bone specimens throughout the museum. List of Interactive Activities Paleontology Hall/Bone Cabin Quarry Geological Clock: Students will gain an understanding of time as they try to spin a million year wheel. Plate Tectonics: Students will study the theory of Plate Tectonics and Continental Drift and make predictions for the future. Fossil or Not a Fossil: Students try to guess which specimens are real fossils through a guess and check pop-up game. Fossil Drawers: Students will view actual fossils from pre-historic eras. Real vs. Cast: Students will examine real and cast dinosaur bones and determine which is which.
3 Lab Seek and Find: Students view a current Paleontology Lab in working condition. As they observe paleontologists at work they identify specific tools and artifacts within the lab. Paleozoic Hall Paleozoic Tide Pool: Students will investigate what Paleozoic sea life felt like as they touch examples of life underwater. Paleozoic Dress-up: Students play pretend as they dress up like trilobites and other early life forms.
4 Jurassic Hall What Color were They: Students alternate the color of various dinosaurs by turning a crank to change the color. Mammal Tunnel: Students crawl through a tunnel under a next of othnelia rex and feel the skeleton of a prehistoric mammal. What is a Dinosaur: Students will creatively get a real definition of a dinosaur through hands-on flip panels. DinoZone: A kinesthetic area designated for younger children next to dinosaurs where they can manipulate scaled models of dinosaurs and hand puppets. Story Bench: Students read about dinosaurs while they visit the past. Match Objects to Pictures: Students will solve visual puzzles by playing matching games. Us & Them: Students investigate bones and joints to discover some differences and similarities between humans and dinosaurs. See How They Run: Students will spin and manipulate wheels to see the bones of dinosaurs move on the run. Cooperation Mural: Students use artistic abilities to create a large wall mural one grid at a time. Learning to See Diorama: Students located dinosaurs and other prehistoric objects in this array of art and ancient environment. Seek-and-Find Pterosaurs: Students look overhead and identify different species of pterosaurs (ancient flying reptiles), then using a flip book check their answers. Erosion Room Erosion Table: Using sand and water students investigate the Erosion process by covering and uncovering dinosaurs when they build streams, dams, and flash floods. Cretaceous Hall Fossil Rubbings: Students make their own fossil rubbing choosing from four different fossil casts. Design-a-Dino: Students will design their own dinosaur using cloth materials to add and subtract various parts of species. Dino Construction (Coming Soon): Students build a dinosaur skeleton using magnetized bones. Head Games: Students use reasoning skills to decipher which skeleton head belongs to which animal species. Dino Scale: Students calculate how many bodies it takes to match the weight of a dinosaur.
5 Fossil Research Center: Students will use modern media to learn about fossil discoveries and news via computers, newspapers, and magazines. Ride a Protoceratops: Students get to climb on, hold on, and ride a model dinosaur. Form and Function: Students observe a display of teeth to determine if the skeleton is carnivorous, omnivorous, or herbivorous. North Hall & Misc. Green River Formation: Students learn about the great fossils discovered right here in Utah. They determine fish specimens by matching pictures to Green River Fossils. See by Touch: Students feel a fossil and determine what they are touching without seeing the specimen. Sunset Quarry: Students get a final opportunity to dig for dinosaur bones before exiting the exhibit. Environmental Awareness: Students write their own pledge to the environment.
