3 Section 4 1 Name of Technical Standard [see Note 1] (1) This Technical Standard is the Telecommunications Technical Standard (CDMA. (2) This Technical Standard may also be cited as AS/ACIF S Note 1 The alternate citation mentioned in subsection (2) is the name by which the AS/ACIF Standard, adopted by this Technical Standard under section 6, is usually cited. The AS/ACIF Standard was published in Note 2 The AS/ACIF Standard, as adopted by this Technical Standard, does not include any amendments made by Standards Australia and the Australian Communications Industry Forum after the commencement of this Technical Standard. If amendments are made, the terms of this Technical Standard will differ from those of the AS/ACIF Standard unless the AS/ACIF amendments are adopted by the ACA. 2 Commencement This Technical Standard commences on 11 December Objects of Technical Standard This Technical Standard: (a) provides for the minimum requirements that CDMA customer equipment must meet to protect the health and safety of persons who are reasonably likely to be affected by the operation of the customer equipment, or of a facility or telecommunications network to which the equipment is designed to be connected; and (b) ensures that CDMA customer equipment can be used to give access to an emergency call service; and (c) provides for the minimum requirements to protect the integrity of a telecommunications network or facility. 4 Definitions In this Technical Standard: Act means the Telecommunications Act AS/ACIF Standard means: (a) the Australian Standard/Australian Communications Industry Forum Standard: Requirements for connection to an air interface of a telecommunications network Part 1: General (AS/ACIF S042.1:1999); and (b) the Australian Standard/Australian Communications Industry Forum Standard: Requirements for connection to an air interface of a telecommunications network Part 2: CDMA (IS-95) (AS/ACIF S042.2:1999); Telecommunications Technical Standard (CDMA 3

4 Section 5 published in December 1999 by the Australian Communications Industry Forum and Standards Australia International Limited. CDMA means code division multiple access. CDMA customer equipment means: (a) a single mode mobile station that is designed to operate using CDMA technology; or (b) a multi-mode mobile station that is designed to operate in at least one mode using that technology. CDMA technology means the technology that is described, and for which standards are set, in the document series: (a) designated TIA/EIA IS 95 A Mobile Station-Base Station Compatibility Standard for Dual-mode Wideband Spread Spectrum Cellular System; and (b) published in the United States of America by the Telecommunications Industry Association and the Electronics Industry Association. mobile station means customer equipment designed to give access to a digital cellular mobile telecommunications network by means of unguided electromagnetic energy. telecommunications network has the same meaning as in subsection 374 (1) of the Act. Note The following words and expressions used in this Technical Standard are defined in s 7 of the Act: ACA customer equipment facility. 5 Application of Technical Standard This Technical Standard applies to CDMA customer equipment. 6 Standard for customer equipment The customer equipment to which this Technical Standard applies must comply with the AS/ACIF Standard. 7 Transitional (1) This section applies to CDMA customer equipment of a type that, before the commencement of this Technical Standard: (a) was available in Australia for use, or was being manufactured or imported; and (b) complied with Telecommunications Technical Standard (CDMA Customer Equipment ACA TS ). (2) The CDMA customer equipment is taken to comply with this Technical Standard. 4 Telecommunications Technical Standard (CDMA
