U sing Temperature / Em issivity separation algorithm, land surface temperatures (LST) were retrieved from ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Em ission and Reflectance Radi2 om eter) data set which was collected on Ap ril 6 th, Two methods nam ed equal interval method and mean2 standard deviation m ethod were emp loyed to divide land surface temperatures into four, five and six classes respec2 tively. Synchronously, the dom ain of urban heat island (UH I) was determ ined according to its different defini2 tions. Then multi2angle comparisons covering the structure, spatial distribution and the tiny undulation of the UH I delim itated by different methods were app lied to choose the better methods. The result indicated that the percent2 age of the UH I area delim itated by both methods was fluctuant with the class number, while for the intensity of the UH I, mean2standard deviation method was less sensitive to the number of therm al field than that of equal interval method. Furthermore, the former was better than the latter in describing UH I spatial distribution and details. Based on standard deviation of land surface temperature against its mean value, the m ean2standard deviation meth2 od, to some extent, likely m inim ized the p roblem s that resulted from the inconsistent time periods of collecting re2 mote sensing data in studying the multi2temporal urban heat island. However, our research was only a p relim inary case study, more details and uncertainties about these methods and results needed to be further studied. Key words: urban heat island; delim itation of UH I; Equal Interval M ethod; M ean2standard Deviation M ethod
