3 1 Introduction The TWR-AUDIO-DA7321 is a Tower Peripheral Module compatible with the Freescale Tower System The TWR- AUDIO-DA7321 peripheral module features the Dialog DA7321 audio codec. The DA7321 is a multi-channel Audio CODEC processor with adjustable DSP effects that consists of 5 analogue inputs and 5 DAC driving outputs suitable for a variety of low power, digital portable audio products. Featuring a high efficiency headphone amplifier and supporting economic single supply voltages of 1.6V. The ultra-low 3.85mW power consumption extends music playback time for battery operated equipment. The features of the TWR-AUDIO-DA7321 peripheral module are: - DA7321 multi-channel Audio CODEC processor with adjustable DSP effects - Stereo AUX_IN on a 3.5mm jack socket - MIC input on a 3.5mm jack socket - MIC input via an on-board MEMS microphone - Smartphone compatible HEADSET connection on a 3.5mm jack socket - Interchangeable GND and MIC routing to the smartphone jack allows multiple headsets to be supported - Compatible with the Freescale Tower System 2 TWR-AUDIO-DA7321 Hardware Description The TWR-AUDIO-DA7321 is a Tower Peripheral Module featuring the DA7321 audio codec. 2.1 DA7321 Audio Codec The DA7321 audio codec is controlled via the Tower processor over the I2C serial communication interface. Digital audio is transmitted and received over the I2S interface. The default I2C device address for the DA7321 is: Write = 0x34h Read = 0x35h The I2S interface digital audio transfer between the processor and the DA7321 can be done in Slave or Master mode (Slave = DA7321 receives BCLK and WCLK; Master = DA7321 generates BCLK and WCLK). 2.2 Power Supply There are two regulators on the TWR-AUDIO-DA7321, both are driven by the +5V supply sourced from the Tower Elevator connectors. U8 generates a +1.6V supply while U9 generates +3.3V. These supplies power all circuitry on the TWR-AUDIO-DA7321. The regulators both have /shutdown pins which are connected via a level shift to the nrstin/out (A62 or A63) pins on the Primary Tower Elevator connector. Important: The nrstin signal must be driven high or set high-z (on-board pull-up R33) to enable the regulators. TWR-AUDIO-DA7321 User Manual Rev0.3 - June

4 2.3 MCLK Source The MCLK signal supplied to the DA7321 can be sourced from the on-board I2C programmable oscillator (Y1) set to MHz as default. The oscillator used is the Si5351A-B02075-GT from Silicon Labs. It can be programmed via the I2C interface. The fixed I2C device address for the Si5351is: Write = 0x60h Read = 0x61h Alternatively, the Primary Tower Elevator connector signal I2S0_MCLK (A21) can be used. The required source can be selected via J2. Jumper Functionality Setting Description J2 MCLK Source Select Tower Elevator I2S0_MCLK On-board (24.576MHz) oscillator Table 1 J2 MCLK Source Select 2.4 Interfaces Level-Shift The Tower platform is configured for all the digital I/O to run at 3.3V. To offer flexibility around the configuration options, all of the logic signals to/from the TWR-AUDIO- DA7321 are level-shifted from 3.3V to IOVDD (the default configuration is IOVDD running from the on-board 1.6V regulator). Master and Slave modes are supported via the jumper link on J1. This jumper allows the direction of BCLK and LRCLK to switch direction. Jumper Functionality Setting Description J1 Master/Slave Select Slave Mode (pull-up) Master Mode (pull-down) Table 2 J1 Master/Slave Select I2S The I2S interface is used to receive and transmit the audio data between the DA7321 and the processor used in the Tower platform. The I2S interface consists of a Word Clock (WCLK), a data clock (BCLK), a serial data input (DI) and a serial data output (DO). These signals are connected directly between the DA7321 and the Primary Tower Elevator connector I2C The I2C interface is used to transmit the DA7321 control data as well as readback the settings as required. The I2C interface consists of a data clock (SCL) and a serial data input/output (SDA). TWR-AUDIO-DA7321 User Manual Rev0.3 - June

5 The pull-up resistors required for correct operation of the I2C interface are situated on the Tower processor module. Optional pull-ups (R14 and R17) are also available on the TWR-AUDIO-DA7321 module. These can be brought into circuit by shorting the R15 and R16 sites. 2.5 I/O Connectors AUX_IN Analogue signals are applied to the auxiliary inputs AUX1_L/R via a 3.5mm jack socket J8. The DA7321 analogue inputs are DC biased so a series DC blocking capacitor is added to the input path EXT_MIC An external microphone can be attached to the board via jack socket J3. The external microphone signal is routed to the DA7321 MIC1_P via J4. The DC bias is sourced from MICBIAS1. Jumper Functionality Setting Description J4 Microphone Signal Select Headset Microphone (J7) External Microphone (J3) Table 3 J4 Microphone Signal Select HEADSET A standard headset (headphones + microphone) can be attached to the TWR-AUDIO-DA7321 via a 3.5mm, 4-pole socket J7. There are multiple examples of pole allocation depending on headset manufacturer. J5 and J6 can be used to route the MIC and GND signals for the two most common implementations. Headphone Left and Right remain fixed. The headphone microphone signal is routed to the DA7321 MIC1_P input via J4 as detailed in Table 3. The DC bias is sourced from MICBIAS1. 6 2.5.4 MIC (on-board) The on-board MEMS microphone (MK1) is input to MIC2_P. The VDD supply for the microphone is sourced from MICBIAS2. TWR-AUDIO-DA7321 User Manual Rev0.3 - June

7 2.6 Quick Reference A summary of the connections is shown in Figure 2. The jumper option summary is listed in Table 5. 8 2.7 Tower Elevator Connections The TWR-AUDIO-DA7321 attaches to the Tower System via two expansion card edge connectors that interface to the Primary and Secondary Elevator board connectors. The Primary connector (identified by the solid silkscreen bar on the component side of the board) comprises of side A (bottom) and B (top) while side C (bottom) and D (top) attach to the Secondary connector.
