1 Community Resource Centre Fergus OEYC Centre and North Wellington Ontario Early Years Centre (OEYC) Information about programs and services for young children Opportunity to talk to early years professionals Playgroups and programs Licensed Child Care Full time child care Before and After School Program Young and Parenting- for youth ages 14 to 24 parenting or preparing to parent. (Shared with Public Health) The Young and Parenting program provides opportunity for young parents to share experiences and hear from helpful guest speakers. Dinner and child care is provided. It is held at the OEYC in Fergus and Mount Forest on Wednesdays from 5:30-8:00pm. The program alternates locations every week. Registration is required and program starts September 14th. A Family Home Visitor assigned to this program will visit the group and lead discussions on various parenting topics. Baby Sprouts for parents with infants birth to 12 months. This covers everything from feeding to sleeping to growth and development and is based on a program previously taught by Public Health. Family and Children Services Parenting group for mothers/fathers/caregivers with learning difficulties who wish to: learn new parenting skills enhance home safety change behaviors learn to praise
2 Family Connections Facilitated jointly by Community Living Guelph Wellington, Family and Children's Services of Guelph and Wellington County, Family Counseling and Support Services for Guelph Wellington, and Trellis Mental Health and Developmental Services. One parent and/or caregiver must have a learning difficulty and child between 0-14 years of age who live in the Wellington County area. Referrals can be made from a partner agency or self referrals are also accepted. Two sessions per year, in early October and late March. Time and location of group to be arranged. Two and a half hour meeting once weekly for 10 weeks. Strengthening Families (partners WDGPH, GCHC) This program addresses substance use problems by reducing risk factors and family supports. During the 14-week skill building program, families learn skills to support them in parenting. Families meet for 3 hours each week. In the first hour, dinner is provided. For the second hour, parents and children meet in separate rooms to learn various skills. In the third hour, parents and children come back to together in a family session to practice what they learned in their separate parent and child sessions. This program was designed for use with families who have children between 7-11 years, where a parent has experienced substance use problems. There is no cost to attend the program This program is for moms: years of age Who have custody of their kid(s) Who want to learn about parenting and talk to other mothers about their experiences
3 Nobody s Perfect Co-faciltated with Public Health Nobody s Perfect is a parenting education and support program for parents of children from birth to age five. It is designed to meet the needs of parents who are young, single, feel isolated or who have low income or limited formal education. It informs parents about the "when s," "what s" and "whys" of the first five years of childhood. Participation is voluntary and free of charge to parents. STAY Parent support -this is primarily for clients but referrals are accepted from other agencies. If a file is not open, one will be opened and held inactively by Intake until the group is over. STAY - Survive and Thrive in the Adolescent Years is an 8 week support and educational group for parents of adolescents. Topics include: Understanding your teen Communication Cooperation and Problem Solving Using Problem Solving Skills to build responsibility Drugs and alcohol Common teen issues
4 Ban Viet - Family Support Parenting support-this is in partnership with Parkwood Gardens who provide space. Open to all of Guelph-Vietnamese. New Group for Vietnamese parents to begin A Shelldale initiative along with Trellis. Circle of Security (Trellis offer this as well) Clients are primary referrals and are accepted from outside Circle of Security. In partnership with Community Living, Trellis Developmental Services and Family and Children Services. This is a program that helps parents bond with their babies. East Wellington Community Services Through the use of videos and circle of security map, parents come to understand attachment in a very effective way. The group works on helping parents understand attachment and modifying their responses to their child to promote secure attachment. Also helps parents answer the question why does my child behave like that, what they need, how can I best help them. An Ontario Early Years satellite centre, East Wellington Community Services (EWCS) offers a wide variety of FREE programs. Programs include parenting, supporting child development and provide a chance for parents to meet with other parents. Programs are for newborns up to six years. Services and activities include: Parent & Child Drop-In Centre Theme-based Programs "Ready, Set, Go!" Kindergarten Readiness Baby Groups Toddler Groups Informal Child Care Listings and Assistance
5 Information and Referral Newsletters, Workshops, and Speakers Parties, Field Trips, and Special Programs Area Served Erin, Hillsburgh, Rockwood, Orton, Guelph-Eramosa Guelph Community Health Centre Offers information, programs and activities to parents and caregivers of children to support child development and meet the needs of young children and their families. Early Years Outreach/Parent Educator WE Breastfeed and Breastfeeding Cafe Strengthening Families This program was designed for use with families who have children between 7-11 years, where a parent has experienced substance use problems. Guelph Family Health Team Ontario Early Years Centre Downtown and Stone Road Mall locations offer a wide variety of drop-in and registered programs to assist with your child s development and creativity. as well as provide an opportunity for parents to develop their parenting skills, meet and network with other parents. Help! I Have Teens! Program- Clients have to belong to the Guelph Family Health Team (GFHT) to participate. Six week program. Adolescent Week 1: Teen Development What is happening in the teen brain? What you need to know about how the teen brain works, including physiology, social development, the importance of peer relationships, trust, privacy, sexuality, etc. Week 2: Instilling Values Growing a healthy, well functioning human. What you need to know to help your child reach their potential. Including information on setting limits, establishing rules, money management, teaching responsibility and
6 teaching tolerance for others (racism, sexism, no means no, live and let live, etc.) Week 3: Peer Pressure and Related Activities - helping your teen through the pressure years, how to manage alcohol and drug use, parties, sexual activity, sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, how to manage your teen s use of the computer, Facebook, sexting, pornography, etc. Week 4: Managing Specific Concerns Houston, We ve got a problem Dealing with self harm, teen depression, suicide attempts, bullying, and anger management. Parenting Pre-Adolescents-6 week program Week 1: Characteristics of latency age children. Thinking differently about parenting. Week 2: Building your child s confidence and feelings of worth. Week 3: Understanding children s behaviour. Week 4: Communication: How to listen to our child & how to help them listen to you. Week 5: More about communication and exploring alternatives with children. John Howard Society Week 6: Natural and logical consequences. Caring Dads This program is an educational and counseling program to help fathers improve their relationships with their children. Supports are offered to help end controlling, abusive, and neglectful behaviour. It is offered along with Family and Children's Services of Waterloo Region, Family Counseling Centre of Cambridge and North Dumfries. Over the course of 17 weeks, fathers will develop skills to cope in healthy ways with frustrating situations. This program assists fathers to understand how different strategies and choices affect children. The program provides supports on strengthening the father-child relationship. Participants are required to attend a screening interview. Ontario Early Years Centre Guelph Programs for children birth to six, their parents and caregivers. Parent education includes information on children, parenting, and much more.
7 Baby Basics -birth to six months, basics of how to care for an infant New Beginnings Group This group is an opportunity to meet other parents of special needs children. While the needs may be different, families experience similar challenges. The group will offer some practical skills for parents and an opportunity to talk about their child and family. All clients of KidsAbility up to age 4, and any siblings up to age 6, are welcome to attend with their parent(s). We are co-hosting this group at the Ontario Early Years Centre with their staff. No Cost to attend the program Eligibility Birth to 4 years of age Other services/programs offered: Informal social drop-ins, Infant Afternoon, Daddy & Me, Toddler Time, Something Special, Parent-Child Place Ontario Works LEAP If you are receiving Ontario Works and are a young parent between the ages of 16 and 25, we offer the Learning, Earning and Parenting (LEAP) program. LEAP can help you: finish high school improve your parenting skills, and
8 prepare for and find work so you can support yourself and your family. Participation in LEAP is mandatory if: you are a 16 or 17-year-old parent you are receiving Ontario Works, and you have not graduated from high school. If you successfully complete the program, you may qualify for $500 to use toward: your post-secondary education or a training program, or investing in an education trust fund for your children. Onward Willow The parenting component focuses on the growth of positive parenting skills. A number of community agencies support this program through the delivery of programs or support services. Better Beginnings Better Futures The neighbourhood group is run by residents who are working together to help build a better life for children and families in their area. They offer activities for every member of the family from programs to family support. Peer Parenting is a part of the overall support provided to families, with a focus on families with infants and young children. The general role of the Peer Parent Program is to improve parents in caring for their children and to support the ideal growth of infants and young children. The Peer Parent Program Coordinator works closely with the Children s Program Coordinator to share ideas, and resources. 9 after school activities daily breakfast club Baby day food packages Moms and Tots Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health For families: clothing room support groups for parents family visitor program Community Health Clinic on site education upgrading parent groups women s groups (women in crisis) prenatal groups running and reading program Peer Parents program Emergency food resources Free Bread Moms and Tots is a PLAYGROUP intended to: Foster friendships between parents, children and families Provide age appropriate activities for the children 0-6 years of age Allow parents to gain information and support Playgroups require parents or caregivers to stay with their children Health Babies Healthy Children The Healthy Babies, Healthy Children (HBHC) program is a home visiting program that supports pregnant women and families with children up to age six. The goal of the program is to ensure that all children have the healthiest start in life possible. The HBHC program: Helps families find and access community services and supports. Ensures families living in difficult or stressful situations get the support and services
10 they need. Helps strengthen parent/child relationships and builds positive parenting skills through education, support, and linking with community resources. Supports the healthy growth and development of children from birth to age six. Kids Line Parent information line for parents of children 0-6 A free, confidential telephone service for parents of children prenatal to age 6 who live in Wellington and Dufferin counties. Kids Line is the central access point for Growing Great Kids, a partnership of organizations that includes Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health, Trellis Infant & Mental Health Development, KidsAbility Centre for Children, County of Wellington Child Care Services and Wee Talk Preschool Speech and Language Services. A public health nurse can help answer your questions about... Guelph Baby Days offered at Shelldale Birth to 8 months, sibling care provided Baby Day is part of the Peer Parent Program through Onward Willow. The general role of the Peer Parent Program is to improve parents in caring for their children and to support the ideal growth of infants and young children. This program is part of the Onward Willow parenting programs. This is a drop in program held at Shelldale 9:30-11:30am on Tuesdays. A Public Health Nurse typically visits once a month. The role of the Public Health Nurse at this group is to lead group discussions and provide support and information about various parenting topics. Some examples of recent topics are safety proofing the home, shaken baby syndrome and family dynamics. Guelph Michael House Public Health Nurse-one on one counseling and education to moms Young and Parenting- for youth ages 14 to 24 parenting or preparing to parent. (Shared

The Association of Parent Support Groups in Ontario of WDG This is for parents or anyone who is concerned about the behaviour of a young person.
13 Guelph location What Groups Do: All groups meet weekly. All groups provide a structured, action driven and friendly environment. Trained and experienced parent volunteers run each group. Each group focuses on practical strategies for helping families. Parents are helped to develop a plan tailored to their family s needs. Each group helps parents build relationships while setting reasonable boundaries. Support and advice are available between meetings. All information disclosed at meetings is kept confidential. Each group offers a continuous programme of help, allowing parents to join at any time without referral or waiting period. Each group is a member of The Association of Parent Support Groups In Ontario Inc. (APSGO) Each group is represented on the APSGO Board of Directors Trellis Mental Health and Development Services Trellis Can: help to build positive, caring relationships between parent and child monitor the development of children born prematurely support families to help their children learn and grow assess developmental and mental health conditions help families support their child's social and emotional well-being consult with licensed child care providers to include children with special needs and to develop programming that meets children's behaviour and developmental needs help ensure your support services are coordinated provide access to financial and respite supports help with the transition to school. Every child goes through good and bad times. It is a part of growing up and learning important skills for becoming independent. When sad, angry, fearful, or defiant behaviours last for a long time, they may be a sign of a bigger problem.

15 resources to pregnant and parenting teens. Programs are available for young women up to age 21 and young men up to age 24. The goal of the Teenage Age Parents Program is to support the personal growth of pregnant and parenting teens and their children. Teen parents are assisted in improving their parenting skills, education and well being. Services include Young Mom s Group, Fathers Group, Toddler and Mom s Group.
