1 The Holy Quran Friday 19th December 2008 By Sheikh Mohamed Toulba (The Imam) Al Hamdu-lillah, all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the World and the owner of the day of Judgement, we praise him and seek his help and forgiveness. I bear witness that there is no true God except Allah alone without any partners and I bear witness that Mohamed is the messenger of Allah, may peace and blessing of Allah be upon him, his companions and those who follow him on the straight path until the Day of Judgement. Brother & Sister Today Inshaa Allah we will talk about the Holy Quran and its importance Allah SWT revealed the Quran to His Messenger Mohammad, peace be upon him, to indicate Himself to the people, to open their hearts to Him and to guide the mankind Allah has revealed this Great Quran. In it are His Attributes and Acts. In it are His Beautiful Names and His Exalted Attributes. In it are descriptions of the believers, and descriptions of the disbelievers and the hypocrites. In it is an explanation of the fates of these people and those people. In it there is mention of the next life, of Paradise and of Hellfire. In it are promises and threats. In it are commands and prohibitions, wisdoms

2 and parables, stories and exhortations. Allah spoke the truth when Allah (SWT) said in Surat Al-Nahl و ن ز ل ن ا ع ل ي ك ال ك ت اب ت ب ي ان ا ل ك ل ش ي ء و ه د ى و ر ح م ة و ب ش ر ى ل ل م س ل م ين And We have sent down to you the Book as an exposition of everything, guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for Muslims. Allah also said The month of Ramadan in which the Quran revealed guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance Here, in this Ayah, Allah praised the Quran, which revealed as guidance for the hearts of who believe in it and adhere to its commands. Allah said: (and clear proofs) means, clear and definite signs for those who understand them. These proofs testify to the truth of the Quran and its guidance, and how it guides to the straight path, The Quran shows us the distinction between the truth and falsehood, and the permissible and the prohibited. B&S; The recitation of the Quran is very important and the one who recite Quran will have a great reward from Allah Ibn Mas ud Narrated that the Messenger ص( ( said whoever recites a letter from Allah s Book-the Noble Quran, he will be credited with one Hasanah (good deeds), and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward, I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter but Alif is a letter Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter * Al-Tirmidhi*

3 Abu Hurairah (R) Narrated that the messenger ( ص( said Any group of people that assemble in one of the Houses of Allah (in the mosque) in order to recite the Qura an and to teach it to one another, tranquillity will descend upon them (from Allah) mercy will cover them, angels will spread their wing over them and Allah will make mention of them to those (the angels) surrounding Him i.e. the angels ص( ( Messenger Narrated that the رضي الله عنھا Aishah said (the one who is proficient in recitation of the Noble Quran is associated with the honourable and obedient i.e. (angels) and he who recites the Noble Quran and finds it difficult to recite, he will have a double reward) ص( ( Messenger Abu Umamah (R) said I heard Allah s saying: "Recite the Noble Quran, because it will come as an intercessor for its reciter on the Day of Judgement Brothers and Sisters; We must revive the relationship between Muslims and the Qur an. The believing person should open his heart to the Qur an, and open his ears, and open his min to benefit from the Quran. B&S; There are three barriers that prevent one from understanding the Quran, and prevent one from being influenced by it. The first barrier is heedlessness. Heedlessness is the most dangerous disease that veils the و لا ت ط ع م ن ا غ ف ل ن ا ق ل ب ه ع ن says: heart from the Lord, as Allah ذ ك ر ن ا و ات ب ع ه و اه و ك ان ا م ر ه ف ر ط ا

4 and obey not him whose heart we have made heedless of Our Remembrance, and who follows his own lusts, and whose affair has been lost Those who are heedless of Allah! Heedless of the next life! Heedless of the final outcome! And heedless of their responsibility So wake up oh heedless one, and leave your neglect in order to be from those who remember! The second barrier, after heedlessness, is desires and passions. Allah says: ف خ ل ف م ن ب ع د ه م خ ل ف ا ض اع وا الص لاة و ات ب ع وا الش ه و ات ف س و ف ي ل ق و ن غ ي ا Then, there came after them a generation that neglected the prayer and followed their desires. So they will be thrown in Hell. Whoever attaches himself to the to field of desires, is far from reflecting on the Qur an and far from benefiting from it and being influenced by it, as long as he does not treat his soul and rush to abstain from his passions and desires. The third barrier is pride. When Allah said: س ا ص ر ف ع ن ا ي ات ي ال ذ ين ي ت ك ب ر ون ف ي الا ر ض ب غ ي ر ال ح ق و ا ن ي ر و ا ك ل ا ي ة لا ي و م ن وا ب ه ا و ا ن ي ر و ا س ب يل الر ش د لا ي ت خ ذ وه س ب يلا و ا ن ي ر و ا س ب يل ال غ ي ي ت خ ذ وه س ب يلا ذ ل ك ب ا ن ه م ك ذ ب وا ب ا ي ات ن ا و ك ان وا ع ن ه ا غ اف ل ين I shall turn away from My ayaat [Allah will turn them away from understanding His verses and being influenced by them.] those who behave arrogantly on the earth, without a right, and even if they see all the signs

5 they will not believe in them. And if they see the way of righteousness they will not follow it So the Muslim should learn and recite Quran and teach it to his children. Uthman bin Affan (R) Narrated that Allah s Messenger ( ص( said, the best amongst you is the one who learns the Noble Quran and teaches it (to others) At least he should listen to the Quran Allah says و ا ذ ا ق ر ي ال ق ر ا ن ف اس ت م ع وا ل ه و ا نص ت وا ل ع ل ك م ت ر ح م ون When the Quran is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace: that ye may receive Mercy Allah also says ا ف لا ي ت د ب ر ون ال ق ر ا ن و ل و ك ان م ن ع ند غ ي ر الل ه ل و ج د وا ف يه اخ ت لاف ا ك ث ير ا Do they not then consider the Qur an carefully? Had it been from other than Allah they surely would have found therein many contradictions. (Nisaa : 82) So reflect on the Qur an O Muslims in order to be influenced by it because after reflection there is influence. Comply and interact with the speech of your Lord, as Allah says: ل و ا نز ل ن ا ه ذ ا ال ق ر ا ن ع ل ى ج ب ل ل ر ا ي ت ه خ اش ع ا م ت ص د ع ا م ن خ ش ي ة الل ه و ت ل ك الا م ث ال ن ض ر ب ه ا ل لن اس ل ع ل ه م ي ت ف ك ر ون Had We revealed this Quran on a mountain you would surely have seen it humbling itself and rent asunder by the fear of Allah. (Hashr: 21),

6 ص( ( Messenger Ibn Abbas (R) narrated that Allah s said He who has nothing of the Noble Quura an in his heart is like a ruined house ABdullah bin Amr bin Ala as رضي الله عنھ Narreted that the Messenger ( ص( said the one who was devoted to the recitation of the Noble Qura an will be asked on the day of Resurrection: Go on reciting and ascending in ranks-as carefully and distinctly when you were in the world. Your station will be at the last Vers of your recitation* Al-Hasan al-basri said: The Companions used to recite the Qur an at night and reflect on it, during the day. They would act according to it. B&S: Think about your boss at work, or your teacher at the university. If they gave you a book and told you to read it and study it, in order to benefit in your work or your studies, in fact you will do your best to read it carefully and study it. What about the Quran? Allah tells us that if we read it, study it, and apply it we will be successful in this life and the next. Indeed Allah will ask us about this book on the day of judgement and the Qur an will be a witness either for us or against us. Do you not fear O Muslim that the Qur an will say: O Lord! These people neglected me, these people learned the pronunciation of my words and letters and neglected my limits and failed to act by the rulings from my verses.

7 Do you not fear that the messenger will stand facing you on the day of judgement in front of Allah saying: O my Lord! Verily my people deserted this Qur an It is necessary for the Muslim to make the Qur an part of his day. One should spend some time with it, recite it, reflect on it, and try to memorise it. Another should be spent trying to remember a verse, or more, maybe a short surah or part of a longer one. Then one should recite it in prayer in order to make it firm in one s memory. Some people can sit in front of the TV for many hours watching movies or football matches....etc. However if they study Quran, they will have great reward B&S Allah SWT challenged the mankind and Jinn to bring some thing like the Quran, but they couldn't. Allah says ق ل ل ي ن اج ت م ع ت الا نس و ال ج ن ع ل ى ا ن ي ا ت وا ب م ث ل ه ذ ا ال ق ر ا ن لا ي ا ت ون ب ع ض ه م ل ب ع ض ظ ه يرا ك ان و ل و ب م ث ل ه "If the whole of mankind and Jinn were to gather together to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support Then He challenged them to bring only 10 suras but they couldn t. As Allah says ا م يقولون افتراه قل فا توا بعشر سور مثله مفتريات وادعوا من استطعتم من دون االله ا ن كنتم صادقين

8 Or they may say, "He forged it," Say, "Bring you then ten suras forged, like unto it, and call (to your aid) whomsoever you can, other than Allah.- If ye speak the truth! Then He challenged them to bring only one sura but they couldn t. As Allah says وإن كنتم في ریب مما نزلنا على عبدنا فا توا بسورة من مثلھ وادعوا شھداءكم من دون الله إن كنتم صادقین فا ن لم تفعلوا ولن تفعلوا فاتقوا النار التي وقودھا الناس والحجارة أعدت للكافرین "And if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed from time to time to Our servant, then produce a Sura like thereunto; and call your witnesses or helpers (If there are any) besides Allah, if your (doubts) are true. But if you cannot- and of course you cannot- then fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones,- which is prepared for those who reject Faith." B&S Allah (swta) described the Quran with many description (or characteristic) He described it with the wisdom He says this book whose verses are perfected and then presented in details from wise i.e. Allah Also he described it with the truth He says (And with the truth we have sent it Also he described it with the greatness Allah says and we have giving you seven of the Ayaat and great Quran And the gloriousness He says but this is glorious Quran I ask Allah glory be to Him forgive our sins and accept our deeds *Amen*
