1 Module 2: Knowing the Qur an Chapter 1 About The Qur an Its Meaning: It takes its root word from the word Qara a which means To Read. The month of revelation: Allah Says in the Quran: The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an. (Chapter 2: Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 185) Types of Surah s & The difference between them: There are totally 114 Surah s in the Quran, and 6,236 Verses (Ayaths). There are 2 types of Surah s in the Quran namely known as: a. Makkan Surah s Surah s that were revealed in Makkah These surah s speak about Oneness of Allah, Morality, Allah s existence, Challenges to Poetry, Hereafter, Emaan, Paradise, Hell, etc. These are short Surah s in general. There are 86 Makkan Surah s in the Quran. b. Madian Surah s Surah s that were revealed in Madinah These Surah s speak about laws, Halal & Haram, Salah, fasting, Worship, hajj, Zakath, Marriage, Divorce, etc. They contain Long Verses in general. There are 28 Madian Surah s. Page 1 of 5

2 Its Protection: Even though Allah revealed many books to different Prophets, Allah has taken a promise to protect the Quran. Verily, We, it is who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur aan) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption). (Chapter 15: Surah Al-Hijr, Verse 9) Its compilation and preservation in one book: Based on the advice of Umar (r.a), it was during the Khilafa of Abu Bakr (r.a) that there was committee formed to collect the Quran and put in all under one book. The head of the committee was Zaid bin Sabith (r.a). The entire compilation took six months. A challenge to Mankind: Allah challenges mankind that if you have a doubt regarding this Quran than bring a Surah like it. And if you are in doubt concerning that which We have sent down (i.e. the Qur'an) to Our slave (Muhammad Peace be upon him), then produce a Surah (chapter) of the like thereof and call your witnesses (supporters and helpers) besides Allah, if you are truthful. But if you do it not, and you can never do it, then fear the Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers. (Chapter 2: Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 23, 24) What is the Quran: A Guide This is the Book (the Qur'an), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqun (The Pious) (Chapter 2: Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 2) Page 2 of 5

3 A Reminder And verily, this (the Qur'an) is indeed a Reminder for you (O Muhammad) and your people (your followers), and you will be questioned (about it). (Chapter 43: Surah Az-Zukhruf, Verse 44) A blessing (This is) a Book (the Qur'an) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings, that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember. (Chapter 38: Surah Sad, Verse 29) A Healing & Mercy And We send down of the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe. (Chapter 17: Surah Al-Isra, Verse 82) An advice O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (The Qur'an). (Chapter 10: Surah Yunus, Verse 57) Is the Quran easy to Understand Allah mentions that he has made the Quran easy to Understand and asks a question, is there anybody to understand? (Chapter 54: Surah Al-Qamar, Verses 17, 22, 32, 40) And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember, then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)? Page 3 of 5

4 Chapter 2 - Virtues of the Quran: The virtue of the one who learns the Qur an and teaches it The Messenger (s) said: "The best of you is he who learns the Qur aan and teaches it." (Sahih Bukhari) The Messenger (s) said: There is no envy except in two (cases): a person whom Allah has given the Qur aan and recites it throughout the night and throughout the day. And a person whom Allah has given wealth, that he gives out throughout the night and throughout the day. (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) The virtue of reading the Qur an The Messenger (s) said: "Whosoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah will receive a Hasanah (good deed) from it (i.e. his recitation), and the Hasanah (good deed) is multiplied by ten. I do not say that Alif-laammeem is (considered as) a letter (in reward), rather Alif is a letter, laam is a letter, and meem is a letter." (At-Tirmidhi) The intercession of the Qur an for its beholder The Messenger (s) said: "Read the Qur'an. For verily it will come forth on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its readers." The Messenger (s) said: "The Qur aan and its people, those who implemented it, will he brought forth on the Day of Resurrection, (being) led by Surat al- Baqarah and al-imram, to support their beholders." The virtue of studying the Qur an The Messenger (s) said: "There is not a group which has gathered in a house from the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it between them, except that tranquillity will descend upon them, mercy will befall them, the Angels will encircle them, and Allah will mention them to those who are with Him (i.e. the Angels). 5 Chapter 3 Punishment for Neglecting the Quran: Following Fore-fathers instead of the Quran is misguidance When it is said to them: "Follow what Allah has sent down." They say: "No! We shall follow what we found our fathers following." Even though their fathers did not understand anything nor were they guided? (Chapter 2: Surah Al-Baqara, Verses 170) The Messenger (s) being a witness against you And the Messenger (Muhammad) will say: "O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Qur'an (neither listened to it, nor acted on its laws and orders). (Chapter 25: Surah Al-Furqan, Verses 30) Thrown in hell fire The reminder (Qur an) will be received by him, who fears (Allah), But it will be avoided by the wretched, Who will enter the great Fire and made to taste its burning, (Chapter 87: Surah Al a, Verses 10, 11, 12) Page 5 of 5
