2 What Led to the American Revolution To discern how America declared its independence would mean to comprehend the tensions between the colonies and the British empire. Taxes, miscommunication, and radical ideologies fueled the colonists growing antics of rebellion, and England was in no mood for back talk from their subjects across the ocean. At last the shaky relationship came to an end, and the thirteen colonies declared independence in The French and Indian War had cost Britain a lot financially. They needed some way to earn back their lost money, so they taxed the American colonies. Taxes included both external and internal taxes. External taxes regulated commerce, while internal taxes were intended to solely raise revenue ( The Events Leading to Independence ). The Stamp Act in particular had the colonists in rage because it was an internal tax. They later demanded no representation without taxation, although representation from the colonies would have been outvoted by Parliament anyway (Stewart 7). Enraged, the colonists essentially went against the British government and created the Virginia Resolves, which called all colonists to avoid all taxes not issued by their legislature. The British continued to pass the Townshend Acts and the Intolerable Acts which broke the camel s back. The Townshend Acts imposed duties on glass, lead, paper, and tea imported by the colonies. The Intolerable Acts were passed in response to the Boston Tea Party and consisted of the Boston Port Act, Massachusetts Government Act, Administration of Justice Act, and Quartering Act. The Boston Port Act blockaded Boston s port until the king s approval. The Massachusetts Government Act gave Massachusetts charter to the British government and limited the number of town meetings to once a year. The Administration of Justice Act allowed redcoats or British soldiers to hold their trials in Britain, where the jury and judge would be more lenient to the soldiers. The Quartering Act forced Americans to house

3 British soldiers if other quarters were not available. The Intolerable Acts infuriated Americans and pushed them to the brink of war. These laws brought Americans together under one nation. They were all angry about the same thing and could fight for the same thing; it was a perfect time for a rebellion. A succession of meetings were to be held to eventually create the Declaration of independence and to secure the future of America. Prominent leaders such as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin would attend these meetings. Thomas Jefferson was the one who wrote the Declaration of Independence and others signing it to agree with him. A price was put on the head of all the people who signed the declaration after King George found out about this. Most of the colonists just wanted to trade with other countries without interference from the motherland. On the other hand, England wanted to control its colonies and gain revenue from them. The French and Indian War had drained them thoroughly, and the Americans had been mainly on the sidelines during the war because they gained little to no benefit from the joining the fight. The British government had to promise them land in order to persuade the colonists to help them defeat the French and their Indians allies. This increased tensions. Furthermore, the Intolerable Acts could have been potentially avoided if the leaders of the colonies met up with Britain and its leaders and talked about their issues. England could have dodged a rebellion if it was not so proud and arrogant; most of the colonists save for a few radicals were not even interested in waging war against England, as they still felt like they were obligated to the king (Stewart 19). England could have used that to keep the colonies. Instead King George declared rebellion and single-handedly lost himself thirteen colonies in America. The Rebellion was influenced by the Twin Ideologies: Republicanism and Radical Whig Ideology. Republicanism gave up private interests for the betterment of society, while Radical

4 Whig Ideology gave the people the power to rule. Samuel Adams was a prominent figure in spreading these ideals to inflame the rebellion (Dupuy 63). People began to shy away from the idea of a king or monarch and felt like they had the right to rule their own government. This inevitably made it easier for the people to break away from King George III (Zinn 77). The people had one more reason to break away from England. Both sides, America and England made mistakes during the events leading up to the revolution, but Britain, much wiser and mature, should have kept its cool and pacified its colonies. Instead the British government consistently passed an onslaught of brutal laws ranging from the Stamp Act to the Intolerable Acts, oppressing the rights of the colonists. Thus, the colonists stepped up and challenged England s claim to the colonies and won to become its own nation.

6 Biography I was born in March 21, 2000 in Pusan, Korea. I do not remember much about Korea, as I only lived there for four years until my parents and I moved to America in All I recall about my childhood is going outside to play either basketball or football with my friends, regardless of the sweltering heat or the freezing cold. Those memories hold a special place in my heart because I was free from responsibilities and wake up carefree the next day. I am now a junior at Redlands High School stumbling through the year and to be successful in the future. This year is my fourth year in California, as my family moved from Georgia to California. Since then I have made new friends and accustomed to the new environment. The abrupt change of schools and loss of friends helped me prepare new dilemmas soon to come in the future.
