Click here June 3, 2011 Dear Community Leader, Pirtle third grade students donated $150 they collected from recycling projects to the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System. Kindergarten graduation was held at Tyler Elementary school this week. Now that summer is here, you might think that we all go home and stop working for the next two months, right? Actually, that isn't what happens in a large, thriving school district. Summer is an extremely busy time of the year for our Maintenance, Custodial, Administrative and Curriculum and Instruction departments. Our staff has already started the hard work of preparing for next school year. Each building will be cleaned from the ceiling to the floor. Our maintenance staff will not only strip and wax floors and paint classrooms, but will work towards the completion of a long list of projects that includes replacing old doors, adding sidewalks and awnings, and remodeling offices and classrooms. While the buildings are being prepared for a new year, our Curriculum & Instruction Department will host over 40 different professional development sessions for our teachers in the areas of technology, classroom management, mathematics, and literacy. In addition, our curriculum documents will be updated to ensure that our students receive rigorous instruction in all areas. The Administration staff will be following the Legislature closely so that we can prepare the budget. Preparations for the next school year also include updating our student handbooks and the District Improvement Plan. With two new campuses opening- and with Belton New Tech High Waskow starting this year in this building- there is much to be done to be ready for the first day of school on August 22.
Page 2 of 5 Thank you for your support during the school year. I know that by working together for our children we can continue to do great things for children in ! The next Key Communicator will be sent on July 8. Susan Kincannon, Ed.D. Superintendent Belton High School Senior Acadmic Awards were given on May 25. Lead painter in the Maintenance Department, Daniel Cantu, keeps our buildings painted, inside and out. BISD Maintenance Department: The Belton ISD Maintenance Department does a wonderful job with the upkeep of our buildings to make them look their very best. Approximately 124 employees are working as office personnel, grounds crew, general maintenance crew, and maintenance personnel assigned to each building. Joe Peterka is the Executive Director, assisted by Robert Hunt as Director of the department. An effective work order system is in place to process work orders in 60 days or less. Several in-house construction projects have utilized our personnel effectively and saved money for our district. These include: conversion of the field house behind Tyler to three Pre-K classrooms; conversion of lighting in all gyms; adding awnings at Miller Heights, Southwest, and Tyler; adding classrooms in the CTE building at BHS; and most currently, converting the old Administration Building to classrooms for CTE classes. A major achievement was in converting the old Junior High to our new Administration Building. Our Maintenance Department is also charged with mandates, such as keeping fire equipment inspected and conducting pesticide treatments. We appreciate the work of this fine department which sets the standard for excellence in this area. Message from the Board President: Celebrating Our Mission! This week marks the end of another school year, culminating with graduation ceremonies for both Waskow High School and Belton High School. At
Page 3 of 5 Miller Heights Elementary held its 44th Proud to Be an American Day on May 20. We had 74 students graduate from Henry T. Waskow High School on Tuesday, May 31, our annual employee banquet we honored our Teachers of the Year, retirees, and 115 of our employees with service pins in recognition of 1,765 years of service to BISD. We honored the people who are the dedicated educators who make great things happen for our kids every day! We also celebrated with our community as over $500,000 in college scholarships was awarded to our graduating seniors at the academic awards assembly. We also recently said farewell and thank you to two great champions for children who retired from the school board. Jeannette Kelley served as a trustee for 9 years, and Tim Stephens served for 6 years. Both served with distinction and kept the needs of our children as a priority. Our community is indebted to them for their contributions. We celebrate a record number of graduates, with 74 from Waskow High School and 547 from Belton High School. The success of our students in reaching this milestone event is due to the dedicated efforts of our administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and entire community whose support has enabled them to have a high quality education in a supportive and nurturing environment. This year marked the end of Waskow High School as we know it, with a new beginning coming soon for Belton New Tech High School at Waskow. We are so proud of the over 700 graduates of Waskow over the past 12 years, and of the many people who have served our students there. They have left a lasting legacy worthy of our school's namesake! Staff Sergeant Patrick Ziegler congratulates WHS graduate. On behalf of our school board we want to express our appreciation to everyone who has been involved either directly or indirectly in helping our students succeed. Our mission is to provide an education that challenges all of our students to excel. It is no accident when we meet that mission, but rather the result of the commitment of a community to support our schools, and the dedication of professionals who have committed their careers to making a positive difference for kids. Our children have done well. They have excelled in the classroom, on the field, on the court, on the stage, and in every opportunity provided to them. We congratulate the Class of 2011 on
Page 4 of 5 achieving a notable accomplishment, and proudly claim that we are indeed meeting our mission! Randy Pittenger President, Board of Trustees Board President's Update on Legislative Session: Belton High School graduates await the ceremony. Belton High School graduated 574 students on June 2. Marine Corps JROTC Annual Awards Ceremony on May 17. QUICK LINKS: Where is the outrage? Our state leaders in Austin are working toward final passage of a school finance plan that perpetuates an unfair and unjust system of funding public education in Texas. Specifically, property poor school districts like Belton ISD will be cut the same percentage as wealthy, highly funded districts in the first year of the biennium. In year two, additional cuts will be made to all districts, although varied based on wealth levels. This so called special "deal" or "compromise" allows wealthy districts to keep their advantage while further undermining the needs of lower funded schools. This "deal" is a bad deal for Belton schools and Belton taxpayers! Under this plan Belton ISD stands to lose $6.5 million over the next two years that was previously promised. While many would argue that cuts to public education were inevitable, what is not justifiable is the continued support of what a superintendent from a nearby wealthy district recently described as a system that is unfair by design. Some would apparently argue that school children in Texas do not all deserve an equal opportunity for an adequately funded education. Obviously, some children are valued more highly than others. While that is difficult to imagine, it is also difficult to understand how anyone could argue for inequity for taxpayers. Regardless of whether we consider ourselves Republican, Tea Party, Democrat or Independent, all should be outraged about the taxpayer inequity that allows some to receive higher funding with lower tax rates, while others receive lower funding with a higher tax rate.
Page 5 of 5 The Equity Center TASA Capitol Watch Moak, Casey In Belton ISD we receive below average funding despite an above average tax rate. Where is the outrage?
