1 Using Visual Studio 2012 for C++ Programming 1. To Start Using Visual C/C++ Turn on PC and/or login as necessary. Click on the following: Start All Programs Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Visual Studio If prompted, select the following as your default environment settings: Visual C++ Development Settings Select None in the menu regarding help documentation Click Start Visual Studio 3. 2 a. A New Project window will pop up: Select Visual C++ and Win32 as the Template Type Click on Win32 Console Application Type MyFirstProject in the Name field Enter the location of your storage device or NetStore in the Location field. Click the OK button. 2

3 b. When the Application Wizard comes up, click Next to reach the following screen: Change the Application Type to Console Application Under Additional options check the Empty project checkbox and uncheck Security Development Lifestyle (SDL) checks Click on Finish 3

4 4. To Create a New C++ Program in Your Workspace (See last page for directions on reopening an existing workspace and/or programs.) First, make sure you select (highlight) the name of the project in the Solution Explorer. Next, from the Menu bar, select: Project Add New Item The Add New Item window will appear: Select Visual C++ Code Select C++ File (.cpp) in the Templates pane. Type HelloWorld.cpp in the Name field. Click Add. 4

5 5. To Code, Compile, Build, and Run your Source Program Entering Code Practice by editing the HelloWorld.cpp file you just created. The cpp extension indicates that it is a C++ (c-plus-plus) language file. Enter the following code in the rightmost window on your screen: //Your Name //MM-DD-YYYY //The Hello World Program in C++ //Uses the cout stream to display "Hello World" on the screen #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { cout << "Hello World\n"; } return 0; 5

6 Make it a habit to save your work every ten to fifteen minutes using File Save All from the File Menu (or holding Ctrl and Shift and pressing S). By taking this extra step you will ensure that you don t lose hours of work if the power goes out to the computer on which you re working. Compile your program (to uncover any syntax errors) From the Menu bar, select: Build Compile, OR press and hold the Ctrl key and press F7 (sometimes denoted Ctrl-F7 or Ctrl+F7) Errors are shown in the bottom window. In this example there are no errors to be corrected. In the case of errors, fix the error and then build again. You can easily navigate to the line in error by double-clicking on the error message in the Output pane. In the case of some errors, you may be placed on the line following the line that is in error because the compiler could not determine that the line was in error until it had read additional input from the source file. Correct any errors described in the bottom window, then compile again. When the message reads 0 error(s), 0 warning(s), go to the next step. 6

7 Build the executable application. From the Menu bar, select: Build Build MyFirstProject. If the compiler tells you that the configuration(s) are out of date and asks you if you would like to build them then click Yes. If any build errors occur during the build phase then fix these and build again. When the message reads Build: 1 succeeded, then you are ready to run your first program. Execute (run) your program. From the Menu bar, select: Debug Start Without Debugging, OR press and hold the Ctrl key and press F5 (Ctrl-F5). The output of your program appears in the Console Window, a special window (with a black background) that pops up when your program begins. TIP: You will probably use the Ctrl-F5 sequence to execute your programs much of the time, as it pauses after the program is complete until you press any key on your keyboard. This allows you to review the results of your program run. Later in the course, however, you might want to use the Visual Studio Debugger. To do this, simply press F5 (without Ctrl). TIME SAVER: You can skip the Build step by simply using the Ctrl-F5 sequence to both build and execute your program. 6. To Print your Output (C++ directs output to the screen, but you need it printed for grading) From the Menu bar, select: Project Add New Item to add another file to your project (see step 3), BUT this time instead of a C++ Code File, choose Utility as the template and then TextFile (.txt). Give it an appropriate filename (say, Hello) Run the program as before, BUT before you close the output window click the C:\ icon in the upper left corner of the output box. A menu should appear. Select Edit / Mark, and then hold down the left mouse button to highlight the text you wish to copy. 7

8 NOW, click the icon in the upper left corner of the output box again. This time select Edit/Copy. The selected text is now saved to the Windows clipboard. Press a key to close the output window. Now select the Tab for your textfile (Hello.txt). Paste the output in this window (either Edit / Paste or use the appropriate Clipboard icon). Use File / Print to send the output to the printer. 7. To Print your Code: just select File / Print from the main menu bar. 8. When You Are Finished Be sure to exit Visual Studio. If you are working on a lab or classroom computer, be doubly sure to both exit Visual Studio AND log off the computer. Reopening an Existing Project From the Menu bar, select: File Open Project/Solution Under the File name filed type the location of your files (the letter of the drive where your project is stored) and press <Enter>. Double-click on the name of the directory containing the project that you d like to reopen, and then select the Microsoft Visual Studio Solution file with your project s name, e.g., MyFirstProject. (If file extensions show, it will be called MyFirstProject.sln) Click Open to reopen the project. 8
