1 06/18/01 News Release No. 27/12 OVER 2,300 SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS, AND THREE NEW NC COURSES AWAIT STUDENTS JOINING IN 2013 Among the new courses is a first-of-its-kind course that caters to the Floristry industry. 1 GCE N and O level school leavers can look forward to over 2,300 scholarships and awards and three new Nitec courses offered by the Institute of Technical Education () come Among the new Nitec courses is the Nitec in Floristry course, the first of its kind to be offered at a learning institution in Singapore. s and Awards to Help Realise Students Potential 2 To realise the potential of technically-inclined students,, in collaboration with leading industry and government agencies, is offering a wide array of scholarships and awards to deserving students who are interested in s unique Hands-on, Minds-on, Heart-on college education. Among these are scholarships and awards from the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and Rolls- Royce Singapore Pte Ltd. 3 EDB, for example, provides sponsorship to more than 100 students interested in pursuing courses in Precision Engineering. The National Precision Engineering Study Award (NPESA) and the National Precision Engineering (NPES) will not only cover school fees and monthly allowances, but will also provide opportunities for a fully paid overseas attachment. With the growing

2 complexity of our manufacturing activities, strong craftsmanship and deep technical skills are critical to ensure the long-term competitiveness of Singapore s precision engineering industry. The EDB hopes to encourage students with good vocational aptitude to pursue their interests through taking up precision engineering courses at, said Mr Chang Chin Nam, Executive Director, Precision Engineering at the Singapore Economic Development Board. 4 Rolls-Royce Singapore awards five scholarships per year to students in the Nitec in Aerospace Technology course. This exclusive scholarship comprises sponsorship of school fees, monthly allowances, and employment with Rolls-Royce Singapore upon graduation. Preparing to Meet the Growing Demand for Skilled Floristry Workers 6 Today, the floristry industry in Singapore comprises 800 floral establishments and 3,000 workers, and is forecast to grow at an average rate of 5.5% annually. The emergence of the Integrated Resorts, tourist attractions such as the Gardens by the Bay, Our City in the Garden initiatives, new commercial buildings, and private housing estates will further propel the growth of the floristry industry. The Nitec in Floristry course was introduced to meet this demand. 7 To support the Nitec in Floristry course, a Floristry Laboratory and Floral Shop will be set up at the new Central. Besides, hands-on practice in the

3 laboratory, students will also be trained in retail operations at the Floral Shop. Such training will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to begin their careers as Florists upon graduation. 8 Industry players commend the introduction of the new Nitec in Floristry course. Guarantee a Place in the Polytechnics with the Direct Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Programme 10 For the first time, GCE N (Academic) school leavers who are technicallyinclined and would like to pursue hands-on learning can be guaranteed a place in the Polytechnics by opting for the Direct Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP). The DPP builds on the Direct Entry Scheme (DES), where GCE N (Academic) school leavers can be considered for direct entry into the two-year Higher Nitec programme. Under the DPP, DES graduates will be assured of either a first- or second-year place in a related Polytechnic Diploma course, provided they achieve the qualifying Grade Point Average in their Higher Nitec programme. The number of places for DES will also be doubled to 1,000 from 2013 onwards.

4 Successful applicants will undergo a 10-week preparatory course before the commencement of the Higher Nitec course in April Application Procedures 11 Application for Full-time Courses will be open from Monday 17 December 2012 (from 2:30 pm) to Thursday 20 December 2012 (5 pm). 11 Annex B1 NC IN FLORISTRY Introduction Today, the floristry industry in Singapore is made up of more than 800 floral establishments and 3,000 workers, comprising retailers and wholesalers, as well as companies which specialise in floral design for events. The Floristry industry is forecasted to grow at an average rate of 5.5% annually to be worth about S$245 million in The emergence of the Integrated Resorts, attractions such as the Gardens by the Bay, Our City in the Garden initiatives, new commercial buildings, and private housing estates will propel the growth of the Floristry industry. Correspondingly, the demand for skilled labour in the Floristry industry is expected to rise. This vibrant industry injects colour into our daily lives in the form of surprises on special occasions, floral gifts, and decorations at home and the workplace. New possibilities have emerged to offer exciting career opportunities to individuals looking for fulfilling careers in the creative and dynamic environment. Course Outline Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: Prepare floristry shop for business Condition cut fresh flowers Arrange flowers Pack gift hampers and baskets Sell merchandise Set up floral displays at event venue Maintain stock Entry Requirements The minimum entry requirements for this course are 3 GCE N level passes (Grade A-D or Grade 1-5) in English Language and two other subjects; or 2 GCE O Level passes (Grade 1-8) in any two subjects.

They will enter the Floristry industry as Florists, and can proceed to assume the positions of Floral Supervisor/Senior Florist and Floral Designer/ Floral Manager, with the relevant experience and qualifications. Progression Opportunities Graduates will be able to progress to other Higher Nitec courses, in particular, the Higher Nitec in Business Studies (Event Management) and Higher Nitec in Retail Merchandising. Facilities and Training The course will be conducted at Central. A Floristry Laboratory and Floral Shop will be set up for teaching the course. Hands-on practice for the conditioning of flowers, floral arrangement and gift packaging will be carried out in the laboratory while training in retail operations will be provided at the shop.

13 Annex B2 NC IN ELECTRONICS (BROADBAND TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICES) Introduction The Intelligent Nation 2015 masterplan will see the emergence of Singapore s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN) as the wired network of the Next Generation National Infocomm Infrastructure (Next Gen NII). The Next Gen NBN is a nation-wide ultra-high speed fiber network that will offer pervasive, competitively priced broadband speeds of up to 1Gigabit per second (1Gbps) or more to all physical addresses in Singapore, including homes, schools, government buildings and businesses. This has fueled the demand for specialists to support and maintain the Next Gen NBN infrastructure services and optical communications for Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE). Some of the job titles held graduates may include Fiber Broadband Technician, Fiber to the Home (FTTH) Specialist and Field Engineer. Progression Opportunities Graduates will be able to progress to the Higher Nitec in Electronics Engineering course. Those who have done well in the course will be eligible to apply for relevant Diploma courses at the Polytechnics, including the Diploma in Info-Communication Engineering & Design, Diploma in Media & Communication Technology, and Diploma in Electronics, Computer & Communications. Facilities and Training The course will be conducted at East. There will be a Broadband Technology and Services Centre created to provide authentic training. Students will be taught through simulation of real-life scenarios on how to provide customer service in activating fibre broadband services in a home setup, and maintaining the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) infrastructure system in an industry environment.

15 Annex B3 NC IN FASHION APPAREL PRODUCTION & DESIGN Introduction The Nitec in Fashion Apparel Production & Design course was introduced in response to a shortage of craftsmen to support the fashion and apparel industry in Singapore. Many local clothing prototype makers have no freshmen to take over their roles. As such, these jobs are usually outsourced to overseas craftsmen to produce samples during the product development process. The Nitec in Fashion Apparel Production & Design course will provide students with the essential skills and knowledge to assist fashion designers in the design and development process. Course Outline Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: Construct garments Evaluate samples for fit (alteration) Develop patterns for outfits Analyse fabric characteristics Drape to create garments Produce illustrations and technical drawings Perform quality checks on garments Entry Requirements The entry requirements are 3 GCE N Level Passes (Grade A-D or Grade 1-5) in Mathematics or Science and 2 other subjects, or 2 GCE O Level Grades (Grade 1-8) in any 2 subjects. Additional admission criteria include a pass on an admission interview and a drawing/sewing test. Applicants should not suffer from any visual or

16 audio impairment, must possess physical ability to work with machinery and do not suffer from colour appreciation deficiency. Duration 2 years Projected Training Places There will be a total of 40 students at Central. Job Opportunities & Career Prospects Nitec in Fashion Apparel Production & Design graduates could be employed in fashion production companies, bridal boutiques and apparel manufacturers. Graduates can pursue careers in the areas of prototype making, apparel production, merchandising, fashion styling and fashion design. Some of the job titles held by graduates include Prototype Maker, Pattern Maker, Sample Sewer and Designer. Progression Opportunities Nitec in Fashion Apparel graduates can progress to other Higher Nitec courses, in particular, the Higher Nitec in Visual Merchandising. Students who meet the entry requirements to progress to polytechnics may choose to apply for a diploma course. Facilities and Training The course will be conducted in two Fashion Production Studios at Central. Studio 1 is equipped with tailor dummies that will be used by the students in their hands on training during draping lessons. This room will also be used for textiles studies and textiles manipulation.

17 Studio 2 is simulated as it would be in the industry, with a sample-making room equipped with all the essential drafting, sewing and finishing equipments to support students authentic learning.

18 Annex C FULL-TIME NC COURSES AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NC COURSE MINIMUM PRE-REQUISS APPLIED & HEALTH SCIENCES Duration : 2 Years Applied Food Science This course comprises 21 months of full-time campus training and 3 months of company-based training. Chemical Process Technology The first year is common to all students. At the end of first year, students will select one of the following specialisations based on merit: 3 GCE N Passes (Grade A-D or Grade 1-5) in Mathematics, Science and one other subject Biologics Petrochemicals Pharmaceuticals Process Instrumentation Mathematics and Science This course comprises 18 months of full-time campus training and 6 months of company-based training. Community Care & Social Services This course comprises 21 months of full-time campus training and 3 months of company-based training. In view of the nature of work in the community care and social services sectors, consideration will be given to applicants who possess a passion for caring and a service-oriented mindset. Applicants should also demonstrate patience and project a pleasant disposition. Shortlisted applicants have to attend an interview scheduled on Mon 24 Dec 12 or Wed 26 Dec 12 and pass a prescribed medical examination. Nursing This course comprises 15 months of full-time campus training and 9 months of on-the-job clinical training. In view of the nature of work in the hair fashion industry, consideration will be given to applicants with neat appearance, creativity and a positive service attitude. DESIGN & MEDIA Duration : 2 Years Fashion Apparel Production & Design NEW Applicants must possess physical ability to work with machinery. Successful students will be required to purchase training materials which will cost about $1,000 for the 2-year course. This is in addition to the course fees.
