1 Funding Bodies and Grants The information below provides an introduction to some of the grants and funding steams that are currently available for biodiversity and green space projects. This is not an exhaustive list and grants and launched/expire regularly so always check the funders website before applying. A list of further sources of information is on page 8. National Schemes: Scheme Awards for All Amount 300 to 10k Deadlines Submit application at least 3 months before project due to start What Will fund voluntary and community organisations, schools, parish or town they fund councils, health bodies. Want to fund projects that meet one or more of the following outcomes: - People have better chances in life with better access to training and development to improve their life skills. - Stronger communities with more active citizens working together to tackle their problems. - Improved rural and urban environments which communities are better able to access and enjoy. - Healthier and more active people and communities. Website Scheme Heritage Lottery Fund: Your Heritage Grant Amount 3k- 50k Deadlines Apply any time What To receive a grant your project must: they fund - help people to learn about their own and other people s heritage. Your project must also do either or both of the following: - conserve the UK s diverse heritage for present and future generations to experience and enjoy - help more people, and a wider range of people, to take an active part in and make decisions about heritage. NB heritage includes many different things, including Natural and designed landscapes and gardens; wildlife, including special habitats and species; and places. Website Scheme The Naturesave Trust Amount Up to 50,000, average grant 1,500 Deadlines No deadline What Projects that specifically address the promotion and implementation of they fund sustainable development, environmental and / or conservationist improvement and or general 'green' issues. Will fund wildlife conservation, habitat management, recording projects. Prefer to fund material costs. Website
2 Scheme Big Lottery Fund: Reaching Communities Amount Up to 500k over 5 years Deadlines Not stated What Want to encourage the following changes to communities as a result of funding: they fund - people having better chances in life, including being able to get better access to training and development to improve their life skills - strong communities, with more active citizens, working together to tackle their problems - improved rural and urban environments, which communities are better able to access and enjoy - healthier and more active people and communities NB At present LA s are eligible to apply, but this could change as new government have plans to stop funding public bodies and only fund voluntary sector organisations through BIG. Website Scheme Esmee Fairburn Foundation Amount Average grant 79,000 Deadlines No deadlines What Within four areas of interest the arts, education and learning, the environment they fund and enabling disadvantaged people to participate fully in society will prioritise work that: Addresses a significant gap in provision Develops or strengthens good practice Challenges convention or takes a risk in order to address a difficult issue Tests out new ideas or practices Takes an enterprising approach to achieving its aims Sets out to influence policy or change behaviour more widely Website
3 Landfill Tax Schemes: Scheme Biffaward: Small Grants Amount 250 to 5,000. Project must not cost more than 10,000 in total. You will need to find a third party contributor(s) to provide 5% of the grant you are applying for. Deadlines No deadline What The main criteria are: they fund The project's site is within 10 miles of a Biffa operation The project's site is also within 10 miles of a landfill site (owned by any company) The project is eligible to be registered with ENTRUST under category D. Please note that your organisation does not have to enrol with ENTRUST as an Environmental Body There will be a minimum of 104 days of full public access to the project per year Any Biffaward grant will be used for site-based improvement work, not for equipment or running costs Biffaward is unable to fund retrospectively, so you should only apply for money for work that will take place in the future. Website Scheme Biffaward: Main Grant Biodiversity Amount 5000 to 50,000 (you will need to find a third party contributor(s) to provide 10% of the grant you are applying for) Deadlines No deadlines What The main criteria are: they fund The project's site is within 25 miles of a Biffa operation The project's site is also within 10 miles of a landfill site (owned by any company) The project has specific targets in relation to a Biodiversity Action Plan and will deliver a direct improvement to biodiversity Your organisation has the support of key agencies, and has partners involved in the project's delivery There is a management plan in place for the key species / habitat(s) involved The applicant organisation and project are eligible for enrolment and registration with the scheme's regulator ENTRUST. These will be conditions of any grant approved. Please note that organisations must be not for profit. Local authorities cannot apply or enrol. Website
4 Scheme St Modwen Environmental Trust Amount Maximum 50,000. Most grants 10-50,000 but will consider smaller projects Deadlines No deadlines What Environmental inmprovement projects with enduring and long-term benefits, they fund and a high level of public engagement (either due to public access or high levels of public participation in the project, or because education / information is a significant output of the project). The Trust largely funds projects where alternative funding is unlikely to be available, targeting not-for-profit organisations such as community groups and charities. Projects must lie within 10 miles of a an active landfill site. Website Scheme Veolia Trust Amount Average awards 25k to 40k Deadlines Not specified What The Trust is committed to supporting community and environmental projects they fund across the UK. These could include projects aiming to install or enhance play areas and skate parks, restore footpaths and green spaces, protect natural habitats, improve community halls and restore churches. Website NB there is also SITA Trust but Hackney does not seem to be eligible using their postcode checker, see Corporate Donations or Schemes: A number of large organisations offer support for local projects and it is always worth checking with corporations operating in your area. One example is: Scheme Lloyds TSB Foundation Amount 500 to 10,000 Deadlines No deadline What Support registered charities whose core work helps disadvantaged people to they fund play a fuller role in communities across England and Wales. Particularly interested in work that achieves this through: improved social and community involvement improved life choices and chances helping people to be heard Looking for work that directly or indirectly produces changes and benefits for users/beneficiaries. Fund running costs, including salaries to ensure that charities can maintain and develop their core work/services. Also provide funding for projects that build on charities' core work. Website
5 London Specific Schemes: Scheme Transform Amount Will provide you with professional advice and support to kick-start your project whether the need be gardening, design, artwork, fundraising or just general labour. Will also be able to buy some materials, plants and tools for your site to help establish it fully. Deadlines End July 2012 What they fund Transform is a core part of the London 2012 Changing Places programme, an initiative which aims to support communities in the Olympic host boroughs to secure lasting social and environmental benefits as a legacy of the Games. Transform enables Groundwork London to give time and materials to support local community groups transform their rundown and underused green and open spaces into thriving community resources. Your group of three or more people does not have to be formally arranged or constituted, but must meet regularly and be able to put energy and enthusiasm into the new project. Your group needs to be based in Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest. Website Scheme City Bridge Trust London Environment Programme Amount No set maximum or minimum, 50% match funding required Deadlines No deadlines What Work to maintain and enhance London's biodiversity and/or work that results in they fund Londoners having a greater knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting London's environment and what they can do to improve it and/or reduces London's overall carbon footprint. Most grants are made to charities. Website Scheme London Marathon Charitable Trust Amount No minimum or maximum Deadlines 31 August 2011 What they fund Projects which provide facilities for recreation or leisure, mainly in London. All applications must demonstrate a satisfactory level of community use and must demonstrate that the project will result in increased participation in physical activity. Website
6 Hackney Specific Schemes: Scheme Hackney Voluntary and Community Sector Grants Programme Amount Small Grants up to 7,000, Holiday Playscheme Grants up to 10,000 and Main Grants up to 50,000. c. 2.5million distributed. Deadlines 5pm Thursday 22 September 2011 What Applications are now being invited for the Council's 2012/13 they fund programme. Organisations receiving funding under this programme have demonstrated how their projects and programmes deliver one or more of the seven objectives in Hackney's Sustainable Community Strategy. These are - 1. Reduce poverty by supporting residents into sustainable employment, and promoting employment opportunities. 2. Help residents to become better qualified and raise educational aspirations. Ensure the educational improvement of Hackney's children and young people is excellent. 3. Promote health and wellbeing for all and support independent living. 4. Make the borough safer, and help people feel safe in Hackney. 5. Promote mixed communities in well-designed neighbourhoods, where people can access high quality, affordable housing. 6. Be a sustainable community, where all citizens take pride in and take care of Hackney and its environment, for future generations. 7. Provision of Holiday Play Schemes. Website Scheme Woodberry Down Small Grants Programme Amount Up to 2,000 Deadlines Accepting applications until funding exhausted What Fund community group projects benefiting Woodberry Down Estate. Looking to they fund support community groups and projects within Woodberry Down: new and existing. The small grants programme aims to help community groups at grassroots level to improve people s quality of life and / or contribute to the regeneration of their local / wider neighbourhood. Welcome applications from any voluntary, community group operating in the Woodberry Down area. Groups will need to be constituted but also accept applications from groups that are not constituted and can help them to become constituted. 7 Agri-Environment Schemes: Scheme Environmental Stewardship Amount Dependent on eligibility and agreement with Natural England Deadlines Contact What Provides funding to land managers who deliver effective environmental they fund management on their land. Area based payments for 10 years. Land must be registered with the Rural Payments Agency. Website Education Schemes: Scheme British Ecological Society: Innovation in Ecological Education Grant Amount Up to 1,500 Deadlines 15 September 2011 What This grant is to help teachers to develop creative and innovative approaches in they fund communicating ecology to young people of all ages. The aim of this grant is to promote good practice in teaching ecology and to support ecology teaching that is innovative, inspiring and intellectually stimulating. Money is available to enable teachers to develop and resource innovative teaching and learning activities and/or to undertake research to evaluate methods of teaching ecology. This can be achieved in many different ways and can include projects based in or outside of the classroom. Website Food Growing Schemes: Capital Growth will be launching a new grants scheme on 18 July 2011 for food growing spaces registered with the campaign.
