2 It's your Community Priorities/details: It's your Community celebrate all the fantastic projects happening up and down the country every week, thanks to their community awards. Awards should be for the benefit of the community, or to build community spirit. If your idea is any of the following: a physical improvement that you can touch; likely to make real, tangible results that you can see; demonstrates fresh, bold thinking, and is innovative enough to inspire others. Why not apply and see what you can do? Who for? Some examples of the types of projects: Community Places Improving the places communities share Revitalising and reinvigorating your community spaces. Community People Helping bring people together To help create a community where people are valued and respected, where there's a real sense of unity and belonging. Community Pride Tackling issues head on and restoring a sense of pride. Helping put the pride back into your community. Community Landscape Improving communities natural environments. Improving the natural environments where we live. Grant amount: From 100 and Maximum of 1,000. Application process: Apply online. Further information: Mind - Ecominds Priorities/details: Grants are available to formallyconstituted not-for-profit organisations in England. The programme aims to help people with direct experience of mental distress become involved in environmental projects that improve mental and physical health and local communities. 3 Bio-Energy Capital Grants Priorities/details: Grant aid for projects in England installing biomass fuelled heat, and combined heat and power, projects. The scheme aims to create an initial market for biomass fuel, installation equipment and services, to stimulate the UK renewables industry. Capital grants are awarded towards the cost of heat or combined heat and power equipment. Grant amount: Maximum single award is 500,000 per installation. Further information: Tel: Website: Carbon Trust - Applied Research Grant Priorities/details: The Applied Research scheme offers grants to projects which develop new low carbon technologies which will benefit the UK. Any business, university, public sector or voluntary organisation may apply for a grant. Grant amount: 500,000 (A minimum 40% match funding is required). Application process: Online application (N.B. Competition for funding is intense (only 10% get through the first round and 50% through the second - proposals that make a strong case against all of the selection criteria have the best chance of success). Further information: Green Energy Trust Priorities/details: The Green Energy Trust will grant up to half the cost of the chosen renewable technology. Who for? Projects need to have a really strong community benefit and wider educational element. The Green Energy Trust is a small Trust with limited funds and unfortunately can t offer funding to all the projects that apply. Projects from local community groups and not for profit organisations and charities within the UK may apply. Grant amount: There is a maximum award of 25,000 but most projects receive around 10,000. Application process: Application forms and guidance are available online. Further information: Tel: greenenergytrust@scottishpower.com Website: The Naturesave Trust Priorities/details: The Trust supports environmental and conservationist groups in the UK. Grants are available to fund projects that deal with specific environmental and/or conservationist problems, and that encourage the greater commercial adoption of sustainable development. 4 Community Trees Fund - Financial assistance for tree planting Priorities/details: Assistance for community groups throughout the UK proposing to undertake well-planned tree planting projects starting in National Tree Week. National Tree Week usually takes place in November/ December each year. The Fund is particularly keen to support projects that actively involve children in the planting of the trees (through formal groups, such as cubs, guides or youth clubs; or a community team assembled for the purpose of the project). Grant amount: 100 to 700. You must be able to contribute 25% of the funds needed to complete your planting project. Application process: Application available online. Further information: Tel: info@treecouncil.org.uk Website: CSV Action Earth Priorities/details: Action Earth provides grants to assist groups in carrying out environmental projects. Morrisons sponsor the campaign in England and Wales. Projects must: Be practical and visual; Have an immediate or lasting benefit to the environment; Involve volunteers (new/existing). Groups can submit up to four projects but they must be clearly distinct, on separate sites/locations and take place on different dates. Grant amount: Maximum of 50. Application process: You need to register you project for Action Earth via the form available on the website, hotline or . Further information If you are unsure as to whether your project will qualify then please call Hotline Tel: naseem@csvenvironment.org.uk Website: RSWT - Biffaward Priorities/details: Support for UK projects that provide or improve community spaces, cultural facilities and places for outdoor recreation; and for sitebased projects that protect and enhance biodiversity across the UK. The funding is provided under the Landfill Communities Fund and projects must be eligible under ENTRUST regulations. The Flagship Scheme supports two themes: rebuilding biodiversity and cultural facilities. Grant amount: Small Grants of between 250 and 5,000. Main Grants of between 5,000 and 50,000. Flagship projects of between 150,000 and 500,000. Projects must restore derelict land, prevent pollution, provide public amenities or encourage biodiversity. Who for? Environmental or community-focused organisations with a project suitable for ENTRUST registration. Projects must be within five miles of a Veolia facility. Grant amount: The majority of grants are for between 25,000 and 40,000. Up to 150,000 may be available in exceptional circumstances. Further information: Tel: info@veoliatrust.org Website:
5 Landfill Communities Fund - Overview Priorities/details: The Landfill Communities Fund enables UK Landfill Operators to support a wide range of environmental projects by giving them a 90% tax credit against their donations to Environmental Bodies. The donations fund community and environmental projects that meet approved 'objects', namely: reclamation of land; reduction or prevention of pollution; provision of public amenities; habitat creation/biodiversity; or restoration of certain buildings. Further information: Tel: (01926) information@entrust.org.uk Website: SITA Environment Trust Priorities/details: SITA Trust runs two funding programmes: Enhancing Communities Programme: for community improvement projects within ten miles of an active landfill site owned by SITA UK. Enriching Nature Programme: for wildlife projects within ten miles of any landfill site in England. Who for? Projects must be within a 10 mile radius of an active landfill site owned by SITA UK. Check for more information. Grant amount: Small grants up to 10,000, large grants 10,001-50,000. Further information: Tel: sita.trust@sita.co.uk Website: Energy Saving Trust The Green Communities Bursary Priorities/details: The Green Communities Bursary is a flexible grant, which can cover the costs of travel, events or equipment for your energy saving project. It is only available to organisations with an annual income of less than 75,000 per year, where no other sources of suitable funding are available. Only available to Green Communities members (membership is free, see website). Grant amount: Maximum of 200. Application process: Via application form. Further information: Green Communities team Tel: Website: Esmée Fairbairn Priorities/details: The Foundation aims to improve the quality of life for people and communities that face disadvantage via different strands. The biodiversity strand aims to help develop a greater knowledge and understanding of certain habitats and their associated species leading to practical conservation outcomes. The Food strand aims to promote an understanding of the role of food in enhancing quality of life. Grant amount: Maximum of 250,000, dependent on which strand applied to. 6 BRE Community Sustainable Energy Programme (CSEP) Priorities/details: Part of the Fund's Changing Spaces programme, CSEP has been set up to help community based organisations in England to reduce their energy bills and environmental impact. The scheme is also designed to raise public awareness of the social and environmental advantages to reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions in order to combat climate change. Two types of grant are available: capital and project development: Capital Grants are available for the purchase and installation of green technologies and various energy efficiency measures. Project Development Grants are available for studies investigating the feasibility of installing technologies. Who for? Not-for-profit community based organisations. Grant amount: Capital Grant - 50,000 or 50% of the project cost (whichever is lower). Project Development Grant - 5,000 or 75% of the study cost (whichever is lower). Further information: info@communitysustainable.org.uk Website: Eaga Partnership Charitable Trust Priorities/details: To fund initiatives concerned with the relief of fuel poverty and the preservation and protection of health by the promotion of the efficient use of energy. Grant amount: No minimum or maximum grant. Deadline: Trustees meetings to assess applications are held three times a year. If your community group is holding a tree planting event this winter we can offer funding to help carry out your project. Each group can apply for one grant of up to 100 for a tree planting event. 7 Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy Priorities/details: The Trust's support is focused on climate change, sustainable development and improving the quality of life in poorer communities. Funding is offered under the following categories: Environmental Projects Overseas, Environmental Projects UK, Sustainable Regeneration, People at Risk and Community Arts. Support is also offered through the Social Investment Fund which offers low interest loans. Who for? This Trust has proactive grant-making policies and generally does not make grants in response to unsolicited applications. However, if a project meets the Trust's priorities, it may be willing to consider an application. Grant amount: Between 1,000 and 20,000; and low interest loans. Further information: Website: Tel: ashdentrust@sfct.org.uk Low Carbon Buildings Programme: Phase 2 Priorities/details: Phase 2 of the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP2) supports the installation of microgeneration technologies for organisations in the UK public and not-for-profit sectors. Grants are available for the purchase and installation of: solar thermal hot water, solar photovoltaics, wind turbines, ground source heat pumps, automated wood pellet stoves and wood fuelled boiler systems. The LCBP grants are managed by Building Research Establishment Ltd (BRE) on behalf of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR). Who for? Organisations can apply for between 30% and 50% of the eligible costs for installing microgeneration technologies, over one year. 8 Foundation - Local Climate Fund - North West Priorities/details: Foundation is a local climate fund. Backed by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and managed by the environmental charity, Groundwork, it gathers up donations from people and businesses and uses them to support individual carbon reduction projects across the Northwest of England. From energy saving measures to mossland restoration and credit unions, all these seemingly small projects make a much bigger impact, together. The Foundation helps all kinds of projects that reduce energy use and the release of climate change gases right across the North West. Grant amount: Maximum of 50,000. Projects must result in the creation of renewable energy and/ or a reduction in the amount of energy used Projects must demonstrate a clearly demonstrated positive impact on the local community and the environment. This will most likely to be demonstrated through by stating carbon savings. Your organisation must benefit specific community groups namely: Young people, Elderly people, People in fuel poverty. Who for? Community groups and not for profit organisations. Grant amount: Maximum of 20,000. Application process: Application form and guidance notes available online. Further information: sustainableenergyfund@eon-uk.com Website: Carbon Trust Loans Priorities/details: The Carbon Trust s Energy-Efficiency Loans for energy saving equipment are unsecured and interest free, with no arrangement fees and a straightforward application process. Loans can be repaid over a period of up to four years, and many of our borrowers have found that their energy savings more than cover their repayments. Who for?
