2 Valentine s Day Everywhere you look in the local stores, shelves are stocked with chocolate candies. Some are packaged in special red wrappers and others are displayed in red heart-shaped boxes of all sizes and varieties. But what in the world does chocolate candy have to do with Valentine s Day? Chocolate was first used 2,000 years ago in Latin America by the Maya and Aztecs. Those in the upper echelon would combine cocoa beans and water to create a foamy chocolate drink. The concoction was used in sacrificial ceremonies to honor the gods and for other special occasions. Aztec ruler, Montezuma, believed that chocolate was an aphrodisiac and used it as such. This has had a great affect on chocolate s association with romance. As it turns out, Montezuma wasn t too far off. Recent studies have proven that phenyl ethylamine, a chemical in chocolate, is linked to feelings of attraction and pleasure. Because of the popularity of cocoa beans with the elite in Aztec society, it became used as a currency. (Could this possibly be the origin of money growing on trees? ) Because of its status, the average person could not afford to drink it. This made giving chocolate as a food to someone an impressive gift. When Christopher Columbus witnessed the Aztec s reverence of chocolate, he immediately took some back to Queen Isabella of Spain. The product immediately took off and spread throughout Europe. Because of its mythical powers, some French doctors were using it to treat those suffering from a broken heart. This may also be why chocolate is tied to matters of the heart. It was in the 1800s that the Cadbury brothers opened their shop in England. They packaged the candy and made it available to not only the wealthy, but the mainstream public. In 1861, Richard Cadbury came up with the ingenious marketing concept of selling the candy in a heartshaped box in observance of Valentine s Day. Statistics have shown that about 75% of year-round chocolate sales are by women, but in the days before Valentine s Day sales skyrocket! 75% of chocolate purchases are made by men to give as gifts to women. The sales are estimated to be about $1 billion across the country! That number doesn t include flowers and jewelry purchases. And so the tradition continues to this day. This month, the Activity Department has many activities planned celebrating both Valentine s Day and National Chocolate Month. A Resident favorite, the Oak Store will be open February10 so the residents can shop for family, staff or other residents to help brighten the Residents day. There will be a Love Elvis on February 12 to help celebrate Valentine s Day and a Happy Love Hour on Valentine s Day to celebrate. It will include wine, beer, chocolate-covered strawberries and many other treats!

Give them what I never had, and have everyone around me happy and healthy. Nettie was born in Letcher County Kentucky, where her father Andrew and her mother Martha raised her and her 7 brothers. Nettie will like others to know her as: I m just plain old me. I just want to help everybody. If I see someone on the side of the road broken down, then I am that person that stops and tries and help no matter who you are. I will help when other people won t help. I simply just CARE! I DO! I Really DO! I use to stop and help people all the time. It s in my genes I guess.

We here at Oak Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation, find it very important to meet our resident s wants and needs daily. This is why we hold a monthly resident council. The council gives the residents an opportunity to voice their opinion about their home. They take this time to talk about each department and what they like and what improvements they would like to see happen in the next month. We strive for excellent at Oak Hills and one of the ways we plan to reach it is by holding our second Monthly Food For Thought Committee. Food For Thought Committee will be held just like Resident council with the same attentions, to gives residents an opportunity to voice their opinion about their food personally to the Chef. The Chef will answer any personal issues and taking ideas on what new food items should be offered so the residents can eat what they want to eat. Food For Thought Committee will take place on February 17 th at 2:00pm. Please use this time to help our home get better month after month.
