7 7 Weather Analytics Hail Verification Report HAIL VARIABLE Weather Analytics hail variable data is updated on an hourly basis with new information obtained by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS), official Meteorological Station observations, and remote sensors. Weather Analytics has built a suite of algorithms that normalizes, cleanses, completes missing or fixes innaccurate data, and builds its hourly global weather database. All Hail Weather Analytics! Hail Observation Data Weather Analytics has acquired all hail observation reports provided by the NWS. NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, established SKYWARN with partner organizations. SKYWARN is a volunteer program with nearly 290,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service. SKYWARN spotters provide essential information for all types of weather hazards. For hail events volunteers are instructed to report all sizes of hail stones. NOAA then cleanses and filters the observed hail reports by removing redundant and/or false reports. Weather Analytics uses a customized version of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) to create hail data for 1x1 km areas. A proprietary algorithm is then used to refine the WRF hail outputs. Finally, when each location and date/time is searched for the occurrence of hail the Weather Analytics system finds both the modeled hail data and the closest hail observation. If a hail observation exists within 10 km (6.2 miles), it is used to adjust for disparity between the modeled hail data and nearby observations. Weather Analytics Hail Variable Built on proprietary methods to indicate where and when hail falls and at what diameter.
8 8 Weather Analytics Hail Verification Report WEATHER RELATED PROPERTY DAMAGE Streamlined Decision-Making All Weather Verification Reports are marked with a Red/Yellow/Green Indicator Icon that serves as a simple rating of potential property damages due to weather events. Unlikely No hail occurred for the 96 hour period. Possible: The maximum hail size that fell during the 96 hour period was moderate:.5 inches in diameter or less. This hail size could cause property damage. Likely: The maximum hail size that fell during the 96 hour period was severe: greater than.5 inches in diameter. This hail size is likely to cause property damage. The rating may be used to identify claims that might warrant additional investigation. Weather is only one of many factors that may be the cause of a property damage event. Therefore, the purpose of these indicators is to help insurance professionals to quickly determine the likelihood that hail could be a significant factor at a specific location and time. The scale used above was created for the entire United States and is meant to address property damages. Other types of insurance claims such as casualty, automobile, and workers compensation will require different scales. HAIL SEVERITY SCALE MAX HAIL DIAMETER (IN) SEVERITY DESCRIPTION Equal to or less than 0.25 Notable Minor plant damage Significant Major Equal to or greater than 0.75 Extreme Slight damage; some plant damage; small divots in car metal Major plant damage; widespread car metal impacts, minor structural damage Major car damage/windows broken; roof damage above one inch
